Sorry, I’ve been away and haven’t monitored these messages.

The light package is sold. I’ll need to move this thread, I think.

Both of those look like Andrena bees (of different species I think), not a wasp or honeybee. Nice photos! I’m jealous of the spicebush, we never see them anymore.

It’s a nice system, but not what I need. It’s essentially new, used only a few times. This is the deluxe set with all the diffusers etc.

I jumped from K5 to K3II, and now the K3III replaced the K5 as my second body while carrying two setups. The only thing I really miss is the dreamy rendering of the K5's sensor. The K3III is sharper, better focusing, better response etc. but the Sony 16MP sensor has a more film-like rendering. Of course the K5 still had the AA filter

I did find it a bit confusing with two different button setups on the K5 vs. K3. It wasn't too bad, but there were things I liked about the K5 interface.

You'll get used to the K3 setup, it's a great camera.

AW/WR prime

I've been out in rainy weather with the 18-135. I try not to use the zoom much in those situations, just keep it at whatever FL is appropriate. The 16-85 is probably a better IQ image, but in the rain does it matter too much?
In those situations it's usually field work so instead of the (not WR) ring flash and FA100 macro I used the 18-135 and 201AF flash, which worked better than I would have anticipated for field macro.

I know it's not a prime, but it's an option you should consider.

For that budget, pick up a K3III - you'll find the autofocus is no slouch. Also pick up one of the newer motorized-focus lenses and you'll be hooked again.

Sony is schizophrenic. Their tech is good but they never seem to leave the wading pool when supporting it. You want to stay in the deep end.

I know my Flickr albums are in dire need of updating.
Here's a series along the Fox River, while walking the dogs we saw an eagle on an obvious hunting dive. I dropped the leash, raised the camera, turned it on and started shooting. Despite being badly backlit, the focus nailed the images in that series and it was an "achievement unlocked" moment for me.

Flash question

It's a nice little fill-flash. I've used it in damp conditions - mild rain but still a nice day - while paired with the 18-135 instead of my preferred ring flash and 100mm macro for field work. I was not disappointed.

It's a pretty simple unit, though.

Yes, DNA sequencing and more technical methods are re-arranging all of biology into new clades. There is a bewildering array of subspecies and populations within a species. You can get as deep into the woods as you want when you start studying any subject.

Help with a decision to buy a used lens

Put key words in the Marketplace here. 70mm 40mm 21mm
The PF Marketplace is the most reputable place to buy.
I have the 21 and 40. I use the 21 roughly 90X more than the 40. I don't think I'd use the 70, but I'm still tempted to buy one.

The 21 is a perfect FL to use indoors, it's super-sharp and a pleasure to use. the 40 is probably useful outdoors and as a portrait lens.

All good advice here. I have a bunch of lenses, but if I'm taking one or there's a threat of rain I'm packing my 18-135. I have been out in rainy conditions with that lens and the AF-201 and both have been fine. They're a solid pairing. The 18-135 at 70ish is pretty darn sharp and I really like its motorized focus.

Very nice! You'll like the K3III. And that 18-135 is a great walkaround lens. I really like its motorized focus, too. It's a pleasure to use.

I'd love to see this lens formula with the modern focus motors.
I use an FA100 f2.8 - I know it's old but it's good. It could be better.

Need advice about flash kit for macro photography

You may have more luck setting everything up in manual mode, including the flash. Once you get your setting worked out you probably won't change them - or very rarely so.
I do outdoor nature macro with a ring flash set to fire at 1/8 power. 1/4 if it's heavily overcast. ISO 200, f/16 to f/20, 1/180 sec shutter. It does a good job of filling and isolating the subject, which is rarely more than a foot away. FA 100 macro lens.

The ring strobe is an old Sunpak DX-8R.

Since the light conditions don't change a whole lot I don't need to alter my settings a whole lot.

I'll use the little 201 strobe and 18-135 on days when there's threatened rain, since the standard rig is not weather resistant. Same setup with flash and camera in manual.

A lens I really enjoy using, nicely wide-angle and quite sharp is the pancake DA-21mm Limited. It's sharp, not expensive, and it's also very useful indoors.

Everyone needs a K-1000 in their collection.

It's also one used a lot by students in basic photography courses, should you want to donate it.

I'd go with a K3II and an AF201 flash if you need WR flash in the field. The internal GPS is handy, focus good, no AA filter etc.

I think you're right, it was probably just a red color theme, not a true night mode. It was better than the blue but certainly not as red as that.

The one I was using at the time was a K3II, maybe it started with that? I just presumed it was from K3 onward.

A dedicated Astro mode would be convenient for sure.

I'm pretty sure the K3 series has this option. I seem to remember setting it up during a night expedition a couple years ago.

Look for used, the Marketplace here is a great resource.

The red gel is also a good option. Just search for lighting gel sheet.

My Dad bought a Sony Alpha, mostly because he was a Minolta shooter back in the day and figured he could adapt his lenses. He has some VERY nice lenses from the 1970s. Of course those are different mounts, but the B&H folks took care of him with an adapter and some other bits. I don't think he really uses the old lenses, after playing around with them.
