Leveling base

I've used the Nodal Ninja EZ-leveler (not the current model II) and found that it worked pretty well. I also need to get one for my Nodal Ninja 3 pano head, because leveling with the tripod legs and/or ball head is a royal headache...

I've been to Asheville but never to the Black Mountain area. Atlanta is terra incognita for the most part... Now I have two more trips to plan!

Last Friday I put a roll of film through this camera, and got it back from the local drugstore today. No light leaks, no shutter drag, the speeds all seem to work correctly, and the apertures on all three lenses stop down accurately. I may still get it CLA'd but it appears to be in perfect working order. I bought this camera thinking I would sell it after cleaning it up, but now I am keeping it.

Would you let someone use your photos?

I've had requests to use photography for free ever since I first got into this in 1992. I've never had this problem with Flickr specifically, but for some reason fewer people are willing to pay for photographs.

Digital has only increased this, unfortunately. I wish I knew the solution, but for now I agree with the above post. Get the proposed usage for each image, consult the ASMP pricing guide, and send a quote to them. If they don't answer, you don't want to work with them anyway.

PS - All of my Flickr images (not that many) state "All rights reserved." Maybe that's why I've never had a request (I guess it could be that nobody wants my images, of course...).

Exactly. You do not lose copyright by displaying the photo in public. If we carried the opposing argument out to its logical conclusion, then no artist putting on a gallery show would have any copyright protections. I can photograph at a gallery opening, but I am positive that photographs of the works themselves (photos, paintings, sculpture, performance art, whatever) could only be used in a documentary/editorial context, and not sold commercially. You should ask her to stop selling the photo on her site, since she has no rights to the original image.

I might just as well record a musical performance and try to sell CDs without asking the band's permission first. That's called a bootleg.

The thing is, several painters that I got to know while I worked as a portrait model actually DID believe that the camera did all the work. At the time, about 1993, Minolta offered "program cards" for certain 35mm cameras to do specific types of photography (the portrait card, landscape, etc). One painting student in particular was CONVINCED that there was something special about this card that would, quote: "pull the subject out of the background." I tried to explain that the card just told the camera to set a large aperture, and that one could get the same effect with a completely mechanical camera, but to no avail. I was a photo student at the time so I actually enjoyed getting into that argument.

That's a shame, because as a rule they are very, very good. I've been buying from them since the 1990s, when I saw their ads in Shutterbug. However, I have found that if I need them to do something extra, I need to call until I speak with somebody. But in the rare instances when I have had a problem, they've been very helpful about returns.

I'm going to have to find a copy of this Mamiya! I imagine it would be great on a digital body as a portrait lens.

Anyone use a Pentax LX for professional use ?

I wanted to get one but at the time (1990s) I was a college student and already heavily invested in Nikon. The LX always looked like a perfect 35mm camera to me.

I looked at this web page and saw a table near the bottom, there is a reference to an S2 Super, manufactured from 1962 until 1968... I've never heard of that one before. Could this be the same camera? One of the documents in the camera case was a US Customs document from 1969 stating that the camera was purchased at a Navy PX in Yokosuka, Japan. I assume this camera would have been purchased during 1968 or 1969, give or take a few months, since the average length of a tour of duty during the 1960s was about a year (based on what I know from my Dad, my Father-In-Law, and my Uncle all serving in the US Air Force in the Pacific during that time).

I was unsure at first if I should have purchased this camera but now, given that nobody here is *quite* sure what it actually is, I am very glad that I did. :)

Today I put a roll of film through it to test the shutter and to look for light leaks (the back seems a little loose). I will post some pics tomorrow if I get some good ones!

Film choice is very personal, try different ones until you find one or two that work for the photos you are making, and that produce colors you like. With slide film I shoot Fuji Velvia 50 for landscape and Provia 400 for general purpose (those are expensive films though so I don't use E-6 much anymore). I really like Fujicolor 200 for people pics and for low light I absolutely love Fujicolor 800 (which you can get, and get processed, almost anywhere). I know that lab printing can introduce color "corrections" so I do prefer to shoot slide film.

My S2 actually allows partial winds. I wonder if I have a very late model? ...

No, nevermind, it doesn't allow partial winding - it's not ratcheted.

The documents in the case include a 1968 British Rail brochure on train travel in Belgium, and also US Customs documents from the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach, in February 1969. The customs form lists the purchase place as a US Navy PX in Yokosuka, Japan. Somebody sure did some sight-seeing!

Interesting - mine resets when I open the back! The serial number is 1721376, and there is another number on the lower right of the back of the baseplate (which is where the engraving and most of the wear is), below the lip where the back closes... it's 23030.

Also the mirror was obviously cleaned... repeatedly... oh well.

The viewfinder is overall not bad, I suppose the scratches on the mirror reduce the light transmitted... I suspect that this camera came to the antique shop through an estate sale, otherwise the travel docs wouldn't have still been in the case. Must have been the original owner...

Ok, today I brought this little camera home. It's a shame the original owner engraved their ID number on the baseplate, and it's obvious that the camera has traveled A LOT. There were travel documents in the camera case! I love owning a piece of history like this. The camera body cleaned up nicely overall but it still looks its age. The lenses are gorgeous! All are Super-Takumar, no SMC-Takumars. Can't wait to run some film through it. :)

Thanks for the info. I believe the 55/2 on this body is a Super-Takumar. The control layout is perfect, almost the same as a Spotmatic I once owned.

I just found an Asahi Pentax S2 in an antique shop here in Boone, NC. Usually they only have old Brownies and the odd Polaroid Land Camera, so I was amazed to see this SLR. For $75 total, the kit includes the S2 body and a clip on accessory shoe, plus 55/2.0, 55/1.8, and 135/3.5 Takumars (either super or SMC), as well as an ancient hard case with foam padding. Everything seems to work, although the body needs a little cleaning and all the gear has a number engraved somewhere. The lenses have a little dust but no fungus. The camera kit is actually on layaway for me right now, so I don't have it in front of me. I scrolled through the forums and didn't see any posts about the S2 right away. Anybody have advice or comments about this camera? Did I get a good deal? (I feel like I did). After several years of digital Nikons I am looking forward to running some film through this old classic. :D
