Hi and a big thanks to everyone who's been kind enough to answer. I am sorry I am quite an amateur and have absolutely no idea what "Bellows " is....but I'll try and read up on that.....seems like Pentax 100mm and Tamron 90mm go head to head. Pardon me for my ignorance, but do they have the option of switching to MF ?

CMV, you listed out the options, thanks so much...appreciate it. Thanks to everyone else as well for taking the time.

Hi,

I am looking for a fantastic Macro for my K10D. Does the Pentax line up have a dedicated macro?
Any suggestions from Sigma or Tamron from users? Will be a big help...

Thanks and regards

Hi everyone

I got a 50mm 1.4 and when I click with it it says on the info 'manual focus'. Is the lens manual focus?

Jonas, in my first post I said specifically what information is lacking in the exif data of some shots shot in green mode.

The picture is much too dark ,than it should've been. Posting will only split opinion...some will say it's ok....and I will say it is not...so let's just leave it at that I do not like it...it's too dark...and that is simply because the aperture was way up. And now I know this is what will happen if you ask your camera to pick up settings for you.

Thanks for the info on MTF. I'll try it.

Thanks and Best Regards

Pentax lenses at a discount- can I trust it?

Hi everyone.

My husband is in New York and has found the following lenses at a discount at the corresponding rates, as they are the last lenses at the shop. Please tell me which ones must I grab and which must I regard skeptically. Also, what do you think of the prices? Can these be returned pieces or lemons?

1. SMC FA 100-300mm F 4.7 -- dollar143

2.SMC F17-28mm F3.5 to 4.5 -- dollar 226

3. SMC FAJ 75-300mm F4.5 to 5.8AL dollar 199

4. SMC FA 50 macro F2.8 -- dollar 191

5.SMC FA80-200mm F4.7 - 5.6 for dollar 68

all prices plus 7 percent tax

Also, are there any shops where one might find over-the-counter lenses instead of online? I am desperately looking for Pentax 40mm and Tamron 90mm macro.

Many thanks for any help.

Thanks for the replies.

I am expecting the camera to stay at F/4 at 18mm in green mode. It is randomly picking up bigger apertures from 6.7 to 9.5 throughout the focal length...and NEVER 4......so I was just wondering if this is okay....because logically, the larger the aperture opening the faster the shutter speed, the better hand held result. I thought the camera would pick up the lowest aperture available at a particular focal length. Which does not happen as it seems.

The picture is not ok. So I learn it is best not to depend on green mode.

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but I do not know about the 'programme line' in automatic mode. Could you tell what's the difference in the 2 choices?

The green mode does have the data stored. Some of my shots do not have it. In the green mode, it does register the WB as well. Any idea why some may not register the details? I use the Pentax Silkypix software for viewing the data.

Thanks and best regards

Hi

I have been facing a peculiar problem. Some of my shots in green mode do not register details such as white balance, capture mode, lens name, RAW or JPEG, quality, saturation, sharpness, contrast, autofocus mode, autofocus area, drive mode, flash mode, bracket, multiexposure, shake reduction,......and for some strange reason.....in green mode, it is picking up this combination...

for a shot at Focal length : 18mm

aperture : 6.7
shutter sp : 1/250
ISO 100.

Needless to say the shot is funny. What might I have done wrong? Is it normal for a cam to decide on this combination....because I think the aperture should have been 4......which is what the DA 18-55 is capable of at 18mm? Am I missing something? The shot was a landscape shot, in daylight,

Thanks for any help.

Thank you SO MUCH!! :).....the links are a HUGE help.......at least I know where to send him......lol........

I wonder if anyone has pitted Sigma 70-300 mm against Sigma 28-300 mm and the 28-300 mm of Tamron? Which is better in terms of performance?

Has anyone had any experience with Pentax SMCP FA J 75-300MM F/4.5-5.8 AL autofocus lense(silver/black)? How does it fare against the Sigma and the Tamron?

Between Sigma 10-20mm and Pentax 12-24mm....which one would you go for?

Suggest me a fantastic portrait lens.

Many many thanks!!!

Well thank you egordon99!!

Now if someone could please tell me.....are Pentax and third party lenses easily available in New York and Las Vegas? My husband will be there this June and he'll be going to buy these...

1. Pentax 50mm F/1.4

2. Sigma 70-300 APO DG MACRO

3. Sigma 10-20 mm/ Pentax 12-24mm

Would you know of any site that lists US availability and prices? Is Ritz a shop for these? Are you supposed to take it a the price quoted or you can bargain? I know this may be really silly.....but consider this......I am in a place where people look at me strangely when I say I have a Pentax..........no lenses available..........please help!!!!

Thanks!!!

Did anyone notice about Sigma 10-20mm that the Pentax mount is NOT HSM.?

Sigma Lens 10-20mm F/4-5.6 EX DC HSM (filter diameter 77mm)

What does this mean and how will it affect us? Is there any other option?

I am in Dubai and they have ONE lens of Sigma for Pentax mount and ZERO from Pentax!!! How is the supply in the US? Especially Las Vegas.

Hi and thanks. BIG thanks WMBP:)

Yeah I agree this was like..."What is the meaning of life?"

What I was asking was the technical details......the step-wise how to.....because I can't seem to get how to change my aperture or shutter speed or ISO in the manual mode:eek:........so I wanted you to tell me which button or dial will do it. Manuals confuse me:(.....I find it better to ask questions.

I've been reading Bryan Peterson's understanding exposure, and it says when you focus on your subject, your camera will 'tell' you that the exposure is correct. Does the K10 d do that? WMBP....is that what the green button does?

First, please just tell me,in manual mode, which controls to use for:

1. Aperture
2. Shutter
3. ISO

I've been using the Tav mode mostly. Also,in the P mode, I can adjust the EV compensation. Is there anything else that can be adjusted in this mode?

Thanks and Regards

Hi everyone..

I've been trying to understand how to use manual mode on my K10d but I haven't got around to it. Would someone be so kind as to explain how I can tackle this mode?

I would also appreciate if someone could help me understand the P mode......what situations does it tackle, what can and can't be done in P mode?

A lens question...can an autofocus lens be manually focussed?

Thanks and Best Regards

Hi NaClH20,

thanks for your information. No you haven't confused me at all:) Thing is I know what exactly I want to capture and my subjects are sometimes near and sometimes far, so I think I'd need at least one long zoom and one prime, the 50 mm f/1.4, coz the 18-55 doesn't allow me to shoot available light shots which I prefer. The macro like the Tamron 90 mm and wide can come later:) .

Thanks and Regards

Hi guys and thanks so much for helping out!!

Toshi.....big help!! Thanks a lot.:)

slipchuck......:) :) ....it does double!!

Finn, theapodan thanks to you too. Everyone who helped,in case I am forgetting.

Trouble is I am so new to this,I have no idea about manual anything except Aperture and shutter priority. I'm still learning my cam. So right now, in true novice spirit, autofocus sounds much better:) But I may change my mind as I understand my camera better.

I was wondering, would you put any of the third party lenses as better than any of the Pentax ones in any category? If you do,especially for the 30 and 50 mm prime, and a wide angle and a 18-200 or higher please do let me know. It would save me experimenting and help the money be spent well.

Thank you so much for your time.

Joele........does the moderator HAVE to look like that?:) ....we all promise we'll be good:lol: ..... Thanks for your reply too.

Many thanks and Regards

Thank you for your replies.

balofagus, big thanks for the clarifications.:)

Couple more :

1. Some lens reviews say, "stopped down it has excellent sharpness". What does 'stopped down' imply?

2. When checking the specifications of a lens, how should I read the info? For example, the lens specifications of Pentax lenses, what information can be inferred from the no. of elements, no. of aperture blades etc. What is good?

3. When a lens has a constant aperture, does it mean it will be open at the same size and cannot be made smaller or larger, or that at telephoto it is capable of the same aperture as at wide angle?

4. For landscapes, prime or zoom? Personal preference or definite advantages of one over the other?

I have been thinking of getting a 50 -200 or a 70-300 mm for street photography. I prefer to be at a vantage point and not move around much.Would that be a good choice or getting a prime with a teleconverter be better ?

Many thanks.

Hello everyone,

I bought a K10d in March 2007, shot some amazing night shots, all credit to the cam, got the first prints, and feaked out:eek: ....the stupid overworked canon printer I got my prints on created bands on my print and I was certain that the K10 d was at fault. My conclusion was based on the fact that my 3 long exposure shots had the bands and one short exposure had none. Anyway, after much hullaballoo the whole thing got settled and now I am ready to take the plunge into the big lens-world.:)

I need your help regarding which lenses should I absolutely have in my kit. My husband will be in New York this summer and I am going to ask him to pick up these lenses from there. I will be really grateful for your help, since I can't make much of the lens reviews.

I am into :

1. landscapes,I wish to use polarizers.

2. candid street photography,unobtrusive

3. portraits

4. low light shots, though I haven't yet got the technique.

Apart from lenses meant for these situations,if there's any other that you think one must have in one's kit, please do let me know that too.

For my part,I've been hearing good things about the Tamron 90mm macro and the Pentax 50mm 1.4. Please do share your own experience.

Being a novice,I have a few novice questions, will be very thankful for the info:

1.What exactly does the term "fast lens" mean? A lens with fast autofocus or a lens with a wide aperture?

2. When a lens name reads,say,50mm f1.4,what does 1.4 stand for and what does it imply?

3. What does the term 'constant aperture' mean?

4. How are macro lenses different from normal and zoom lenses?

5. What does a teleconverter do?

Many thanks for your help. I hadn't ever handled a camera before I bought my dslr and am completely lost with it:( . Though I manage to get good pics sometimes,I don't really know how I made them. But that will make another topic.

Hi everyone,

the crop I posted was about the green lines, not the bands. So am I being told here that it is okay to have this distortion and it should be accepted as normal?

I am on another forum about the same issue and was told exactly the same thing, that my computer screen is bad,and I'll tell here again that I have a brand new computer.
Can anyone tell me why such bands were visible ONLY in the long exposure shots and not in the fast shutter speed ones?

Thanks and Best Regards

I know it's not a printer issue since all other shots that were at fast shutter speeds did not have the vertical stripes in prints. They were only present in the long exposure shots.

jeffkroll thanks, but my Silkypix photo editor does not work. I can post the green lines shot though,if you look close you can see them running parallel to windows,or you can zoom in on them.

The shot was a JPEG, NO PP DONE.

Exif :
Mode ; Shutter and aperture priority

Focal L : 28mm

Sh Sp : 30 sec
Ap : F16

EV 0.0

ISO 100

The problem with posting the pic is that it is not visible AT ALL on the computer screen. As I said,I could not see it at all till the prints as large as A3 came.
I am really wondering if the upgrade is going to be any help really.
