OK, I just had to test to see if my ears were fooling me. I recorded the sound of 6 repetitions of my shutter, then measuring in Audacity how long it takes and calculating frames per second. Tested with both AA eneloops and Li-Ion (freshly charged).
Lens: FA35/2
Shutter and aperture: 1/6000 and f8
Manual focus
Results (average of two tests):- Li-Ion: 6.16 fps
- Eneloop: 5.36 fps
Not as big a difference as I guessed, but noticable. Nothing to worry about when deciding AA or Li-Ion.

I have the K-30. You have AF during video recording, but you have to use the AF-button to activate it. Focus peeking does not work during video, unfortunately as that would be much more useful than noisy AF.

Another thing: With Li-Ion you get more frames per second. I guess around 4 fps with AA and 6 with Li-Ion. For me, this does not matter. I have two sets of AA Eneloops and happy with that.

Yes, I used to have that problem too with my K200D. And even worse, I like to use back-button focus which nobody understands even when I tell them how it works, and switching to auto-mode does not override that either.
Having just upgraded to K30 I have solved those problems by making one of the user modes to "guest mode" where everything is set to auto and every button is mapped to what most people expect them to.

Sounds a lot like my problem with my K200D. It was related to temperature. Too cold, and instead of taking pictures it just started clicking. It got gradually worse and would at the end only take pictures when heated to living room temperature.
I got mine fixed under warranty.

Sorry, I did not mean to say the FA35/2 is not sharp. My point was that you need skills to use f2 in low light properly, which I clearly do not have. I get much better results at smaller apertures. I therefore reacted to the statement that fast lenses are mandatory in low light. Not so for me.

Really? I have the FA35/2, and while I use it quite a lot for low light photography, it is plain impossible for me to use it on low f-numbers. At f2 in low light, autofocus is not working at all, and my eyes (and technique) are not good enough to focus manually either in low light.
I usually go with f5.6 or smaller, which at least enables me to get usable pictures.
Here is an example (aurora australis) from yesterday where I was tempted to use f4. It is not very clear. Had I gone to f2, I would not have a usable picture at all. The temperature was -33C so lots of trial and errors was out of the question. It is even more difficult inside because focusing at near objects reduces depth of field even more.
BTW, I am not very experienced so hopefully I will improve my focusing skills. |
