Need Suggestion on Quality Lens to Fill In my Lineup

You didn't mention what you want to cover that gap. Some nice alternatives depending on your desires:

PRIMES
Small: DA21, DA40 or FA43
Fast: FA31
Versatile: DA35Macro

ZOOMS
Compact: DA20-40
Versatile, fast aperture not important: DA16-85
Versatile, fast aperture: Tamron 17-50 or DA16-50

COMPACT CAMERA
(advantages are: camera that fits in pants pocket, not having to swap lenses to go from tele to normal range, backup body/lens.)
Ricoh GR or Sony RX100 MkIII

Now it's back to you...

Alternative Lens Hood for 60-250?

A couple thoughts to ponder as you look for cheaper alternatives:

1. Rubber hoods collapse. As a consequence, they do not offer as much protection for the lens as a rigid lens hood. I've had 3 lens hoods sacrifice themselves to save my lenses over the years and numerous other times they've saved my front element, without breaking in the process.
2. You use a polarizer. That little cutout in the hood to rotate the polarizer sure is nice. I'd sure miss it if I went with a hood without one...

Backpack for K-3

I've found camera backpacks to be heavy, overpadded, hot and not particularly comfortable. My preference is to get a great daypack. I then attach my camera and walk-about lens to the shoulder-strap using Peak Designs' Capture Pro Camera Clip so the camera is always immediately at hand. My LensPen and polarizer go in the small pocket on the waist strap of the backpack. Any other lenses and accessories I may bring go in the smallest bag I can fit them in (I have a few different sizes kicking around for this purpose) and I put that into the backpack. All set and a much more comfortable set-up with the camera far more accessible to boot. Mine also has space for a hydration bladder, which I really like.

If I want a tripod, I have two solutions. My Talon 22 backpack has a system for holding trekking poles. I'll sometimes use that. It does require the tripod to be between my left arm and my body. Advantage is I can remove the tripod without taking off the backpack. Disadvantage is the bulk of the tripod is under my arm requiring me to hold my arm in a somewhat different position. Fine for a short while, annoying on a long day hike. The second alternative is to lash it to the back of the backpack where the straps for attaching an ice-axe are, but obviously this requires removing the backpack to access the tripod.

General walkabout kit: DA21
Like a little longer focal length or want better close-up ability: DA35

I would not add the DA40 to the DA15 & DA70. I love it paired with the DA21 as the smallest, lightest most versatile 2 lens setup (one on body, one in pocket), but I find 24 to 35 to be the most useful focal length to leave on an APS-C camera, switching to something wider or longer as needed. I'd rather go wider (DA21; can always crop later) than longer (DA40).

Here's another thought for your thought experiment: DA15, DA20-40 & DA70. Then you get all 3 focal lengths in one! Leave that one on the body where the extra bulk doesn't seem to matter as much and switch out to the DA15 or DA70 when required.

[Ok, sorry, I cheated.]

What features would you like to see in K-3's successor? (No FF!)

I used to think OVFs were superior to EVFs, but after a year of using the Sony RX10 and RX1 with EVF, I've really come to appreciate a number of things about EVFs. When I now use my Pentax gear, I really miss some of the advantages of an EVF. I doubt Pentax users are ready to switch en masse to an EVF, but if there was a button that could alternate the viewfinder between live view EVF and regular OVF, or at least if they could project a live histogram onto the OVF view (like a HUD) it would be a start.

Suggestions for laptop / camera bag?

A really well-designed bag that will carry that gear, but not much more, is the Think Tank Retrospective 7. I love this bag. You'll have to have a fairly small "laptop" to fit in there. I can get my Microsoft Surface Pro 2 in there no problem and previously just managed to squeeze in a Sony VAIO Duo 11. The VAIO Duo 11 (specs here) is about the biggest computer that could ever fit in the rear laptop pocket.

I'll 3rd the recommendation for the 35/2.4. Fast lens, very affordable, decent AF, and good focal range for what you want.

If you want a 2nd lens recommendation, I'd say consider the D FA 50/2.8 Macro lens for close-ups of your new addition to the family and to double as a head/shoulders portrait lens.

K3 Live view

To this I'll add (based on K-5 experiences, not K-3) that under those circumstances it's also a fairly dim view through the viewfinder too, so the Live View is not necessarily worse than the OVF, just different.

In the past: DA15 & 70, then either DA21 & 40 or else DA35macro. Then I acquired a Sony RX10 and I've been loving that for the 24-200 range and WR.

I've just ordered the DA20-40 for the walkabout lens and with it's WR and range, plan on leaving DA21, 35 & 40 at home. In the future if I've got time to change lenses, I'll go with DA15, DA20-40, and FA100 macro, otherwise I'll bring along the RX10.

Sharpest Pentax lens in your bag?

Center sharpness, my FA 50/1.7. Needs to stop down to f/2.5 to get there, but from there on, it's definitely my sharpest in the centre. I does suffer veiling glare and requires stopping down to f/8 to get sharp edges though. Sharpest overall, from corner to corner with no noticeable defects, the DFA 100 macro. An amazing, flawless lens and pretty much as sharp as the FA 50/1.7 centrally too.

iPad - useful as a photo browser? (or anything really)

My solution is to use Dropbox. I store all the photos I want to share amongst my devices and to share with others there. Dropbox automatically syncs my home PC, work PC, laptop, iPad, iPhone, etc. The Dropbox app on your iDevice keeps all the folder structure. I can even share a link with friends and family - like this.

Simply install Dropbox on your PC. Move your folder structure into the Dropbox folder. Install the app on your iPad and link it to your account. Enjoy viewing your photos!

Good book with everything about printing?

People may be able to give you some recommendations if they knew a few more details
- Do you have a printer yet?
- If so, which one? A lot of key settings are in the printer driver. No point teaching you how to use an Epson when you've got a Canon.
- If not, are you looking for guidance on buying one? Or are you planning on printing at a photo lab (online or in person)?
- Are you looking to use a RIP or the printer's driver?
- What photo editing software do you use? That's where the rest of your settings are and even the two big Adobe programs Lightroom and Photoshop have different settings for printing. You'll also want to different things for preparing the image for printing. All other photo editing software has their own settings too.
- Do you have a colour managed system? Is this something you want? This may be something else you require instruction on.

With these answers, maybe someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

That's exactly the symptoms my DA50-135 had before failing completely. I presume that's the famous SDM failure. Mine was too late to return, but still under warranty so I got it fixed under warranty and it works great. Hopefully it lasts.

Looking for a smaller bag for K5 or K3 + 1 or 2 lens

I have the Domke F8 (see above) as well as the Think Tank Retrospective 5 & 7. The 5 is for my Sony RX1 & RX10 kit which is my primary kit these days (sorry Pentax). The 7 is my big camera & laptop bag. The F8 works far, far better for my Pentax kit than either of the Retrospective bags. It just fits the small Pentax lenses on the bottom and the camera up top so perfectly. I've got a lot of bags, but none work so well as the F8.

I don't think you can buy a better bag for what you want to carry than the Domke F-8 Small Shoulder Bag. It's like they made it specifically for Pentax DSLRs and their small primes.

At the bottom of the main compartment, I've made a divider which divides the bottom 1/2 of the bag into two halves. I can fit two smaller primes such as any of the Ltds or my FA 50/1.7 in either half. That's 4 primes in the bottom. I the photo below you can see the DA15, 21, 35 & 70 in the bottom. In the photo I'm using the Op/tech Double Lens Mount Cap to keep two lenses attached to one another, but I'll often just put the two lenses with their rear caps pointed toward one another as there'll be no scuffing of the lens bodies that way either. If I'd rather, I can put two primes in one half and a single longer lens, such as the DFA100macro, DA18-135 or FA135/2.8 in the other half.

Separating the top half from the bottom half, I've put a flap that quickly folds up and out of the way to allow access the bottom half. It doesn't completely cover the bottom half, but the camera up top has never bumped the lenses below.

In the top half I put my camera (K5) with a lens attached. With the hood reversed I can fit any of the larger lenses mentioned above in the top half. You can see my DA18-135 mounted in the photo below. I can even get the DA12-24 with hood reversed in there but that's about the biggest that will fit. I certainly cannot get the DA*50-135/2.8 in there. Well, not with a camera attached!

There's pockets on either side. My filters go in one side. Mostly the other side is left empty, but sometimes I throw in a DA40 in there or my Sony RX100 or a blower. The top lid has a small zippered pocket. I throw in an allen key for my tripod plates, the Pentax remote controller and a hotshoe spirit/bubble level in there. The front pocket is rather spacious, but well designed so nothing ever falls out. In there I've got my TriggerTrap cable, lens cloth, lens cleaning papers, Lens Pen, spare batteries and cards, a Sharpie pen, etc.

It's a fantastic camera bag and I absolutely love it with my Pentax kit. I am absolutely certain you cannot find a smaller bag to hold the K5 and 6 primes (incl the DA40 in a pocket). There's no wasted space, yet everything is easy to access and not "stuffed" in at all. The other great thing, is that when the camera is out of the bag, all the other lenses sit in the very bottom of the bag. This keeps the centre of gravity very low and the bag is well-balanced so it feels good on the shoulder and will never tip. I never close the clip (even though it's the best closure I've ever had on a bag) when the camera is out because everything in there is so secure and it makes accessing the contents of the bag even that much easier.

Hmm, my photos didn't seem to get inserted. It's been ages since I've inserted images into a posting here and I seem to have forgotten how. I can figure it out how, I'll try to fix it. In the meantime, if you right click on them and select Open Image in New Tab, it seems to work at my end. Hope it does for you too.

what do you do about soreness?

I presume you mean sealed shut in a muscular way, not by sticky discharge which would most likely mean conjunctivitis.

The best solution is to learn to shoot with both eyes open. I suspect your left eyelids just got overworked from squinting the eye shut all day.

Sounds like you're using your right eye at the viewfinder already. That's better from an ergonomic standpoint - it's harder to leave the right eye open and use the left at the viewfinder as your right eye will be pretty much looking at your right hand operating the camera. Trust me, I'm left eye dominant and used to use my left eye all the time. I unlearned that behaviour and shoot with my right eye now - much better. My left eye can actually be used to keep an eye on my surroundings while the right eye looks through the viewfinder, and that's a good thing.

Also, make sure you've got the dioptre in the viewfinder adjusted correctly. If you go too strong on the plus side, you'll just blur things so that's ok, you'll realize your error and readjust. Go too far the other way though and you're forcing your eye to accommodate through the viewfinder. With this accommodation you're bringing the image clear, but adding unnecessary eyestrain. The best way to focus the dioptre is to go all the way to the plus side, then slowly bring down the adjustment until everything FIRST becomes clear. Then immediately stop.

What I really used (all photos since July 1/10):
1) DA70Ltd
2) DA21Ltd
3) DA12-24/4.0
4) DA40Ltd
5) DA*60-250/4.0

What I would have guessed:
1) DA21Ltd
2) DA70Ltd
3) DA40Ltd
4) FA135/2.8
5) DA12-24

1&2 account for nearly 1/2 my photos so I guess I knew what I was doing when I bought that pair as my first Pentax lenses!

One I find handy is the "hand the camera to someone else to take my/our group photo" mode. I'm a center focus point (if not manual) with focus removed from the shutter button and placed to the AF button kind of shooter. I've discovered that this doesn't work when passing the camera to my wife, children or passersby to take the "and here we are in front of the ........" tourist shot. I'm in so few photos it's like I don't even belong in the family.

Setting up a P mode with all the AF points on and the AF on the shutter button like everyone else expects it to be saves a lot of out of focus shots along with trying to explain how to operate a camera to other people. I suppose I first could turn it to the green square, but then I'd have to live with JPG files and I'm a RAW guy (I think it's JPG?) Actually, I don't really know what the green square mode does. Don't confuse me!

P.S. I love the green button on the back though...
