No kidding about AF in tungsten lighting

I decided to do what I thought was necessary lens adjusting for my Tamron 28-75 and my Sigma 105 on the K5. I did close up shots on a focus board under the house lights and I had to adjust most of the lenses to -8.

but..

When I did it again today in sunlight it turned out that none of the lenses needed to be adjusted, well... the Tamron did, but only by -2.

So its true that the K5 has front focus problems in tungsten light. The good thing is that I can turn the adjustment on/off depending on lighting and the adjustment settings are kept for each lens. I was hoping the newest firmware would correct this but it doesn't look like it'll get fixed.

I'm glad I have the IIs as my main Pentax. I'm not badmouthing the K5 at all but I can see why they needed to make these improvements.

Does the K5 focus track like the K5ii?

Been a while since I posted here. :-)
I've had a K5iis for a while and love it. I decided to get a regular K5 as a second body. All in all they're practically twins except for one tiny issue.

I use continuous focus on both cameras, using SEL to pick my focus point. The thing is the K5ii can track around the frame where the focus point was. I can't seem to do that on my K5. The focus point will not follow the subject. It'll just stay there and focus on whatever is at that point. As far as I can tell, all of my settings are identical. Is it that the K5 doesn't focus track as well?

I just got it today from KEH and I want to make sure I wan't expecting too much from it. Also, I have the latest firmware and have the AF points at 11. The points don't group up like the K5ii.

Thanks.

Radio trigger for HSS I don't care about P-TTL just HSS. PTTL not neccesary or wanted

...and unfortunately, the only way you're going to be able to do that is to use an on-camera flash to trigger your other flash through HSS. As far as I know, the pop-up flash cannot be used as a commander with HSS but you can use it as a wireless commander till you hit the max sync speed (1/180). One day, Pentax will keep pace with competitors and offer a wireless solution that isn't IR and can use HSS/Pttl. If you get a Metz 48 Af-1 or the like you can do this inexpensively. The cheaper pentax flash (Af360) doesnt have a swivel head so unless you're using it indoors, where the flash can bounce around the room, the remote flash won't see it if its behind you.

Item Description
Hi again. I'm still selling off some of my Pentax equipment. If you're looking for a K200D at a good price then look here.

Pentax K7 w/ 3rd party grip, ML60 focusing screen, 2 batts and O-ME53 viewfinder magnifier. - The K7 is in great condition and less than 8,500 shutter count and has a screen protector. Included is the original viewfinder cup and the flash cap as well as the body cap should you not want to bring the grip. The battery grip is a 3rd party with all buttons working but the paint has worn off on some of them (see pic). I've mainly used the grip for extra size as well as the shutter button mainly. The added clip for the use of AA batteries is included. Also, I put in the M60 focus screen. It also has 2 Li-on rechargeable batteries with the charger. ------ $600!!!

K20d or K7

Ironically, I've been having kind of the same issue. But in my case, its which one to SELL. I'm leaning towards keeping the K20 even though it has a noisier shutter, but the grip is WR also and its a bit less noisy at all ISOs (in my opinion). I never used the HDR function on the K7 and even with the 3rd party grip it still feels a bit small.
We both have some tough decisions to make. :hmm:

Where in NY to repair Pentax lens?

It looks like they repair Pentax. Try it and see how it is. It may be a good alternative then having to send it to CRIS for every type of service.

Edit: It looks like they may repair Pentax BODIES but not LENSES. I saw that they say they have experience with Canikon lenses but nothing else.

Quantaray / Promaster Filters?

I'd avoid Quantaray CPL or UV filters. They have a tendency to flare if the sun or bright light is anywhere from 45 degrees to in front of the lens. It looks like the lens is foggy or you'll get ugly prism halos around point lights like streetlights or lamps.
Tiffen filters aren't so bad for the price. You don't get that kind of IQ degradation like the Quants.

Pentax at the NYC Marathon

I was at the 23 mile mark (5th Ave and 102nd St) to cheer on a friend of mine at the marathon yesterday when I came across a guy using a K7 or K5 walking down towards the next block. I think this is the first time in 6-8 months that I saw somebody use a Pentax that wasn't a green or red Kr. I pointed to it and said "Hey, Pentax finally! Cool!"
The guy, maybe in his late 40's to mid-50's pretty much looked at me for a split and kept walking, like i was asking him for spare change. My wife, who is normally softspoken, said "Wow, friendly guy!"

Well, that shoots down the theory that all Pentaxians are friendly to each other! :D

I've always been curious how the AF will deal with trying to selectively focus on someone whose surrounded by a throng of people running. That sounds like a job for manual focus no matter what the camera brand.

K5 problems

JHD's point is only one side of the argument. It sounds to me that he's saying that Hoya dropped (or was looking to drop) Pentax because of QC problems in the K5 line. Thing is, wasn't the K5 under Hoya's watch? The K10, 20 and 7 were all under Samsung and even though they were a couple generations behind competitors there wasn't an issue with QC and build. Hoya puts out the K5 which, sorry, is just a K7 with a better sensor. Maybe it was in the pipeline earlier, who knows. But the fact is, under Hoya, things started to get a little loose. Was the factory move to Vietnam under Hoya? Curious.

To me, its like blaming the architect for your house falling down when it was the contractor that was cutting corners.

eye-fi and K200

It was never intended to be slow by design. Its just that even the fastest wi-fi isn't as fast as USB tethering. I think we still have a couple of generations of wi-fi to go before before we start hitting speeds like that. 802.11 N goes up to 300mbps (megabits) while USB 2.0 goes to 408Mbps (Megabytes) so you have quite a speed difference.
In the real world, USB tethering will have your photo downloaded to your laptop instantaneously, while with Eye-Fi it can take up to 10-12 seconds depending on the size a file. In this case a 14MP RAW or Jpg (4 stars). Its not as bad as it sounds. Once you get into the shooting flow you won't notice it.

The Eye-fi will drain your batteries quicker though since it needs the power to send the pics. From my experience its about a 30% cut.
I'd recommend a direct (ad-hoc) connection over a router for speed sake. Also, its simpler to set up. And if you're shooting outside (in a field for example) and there's no wi-fi or 3g phone then you can still send the pics to your laptop that you took with you. And now it works for Android and (I think) Iphone. The direct connection has a range of 30 ft so you'll be in good shape,

The online sharing is a useful feature but I've never used it. If I was shooting vacation snaps and wanted to put on my FB page or Flickr thats one thing.

Here's some good news, if you feel that Eye-fi is too slow for you, you CAN tether it. Yup, just get PKTether which is a 3rd party program and use the USB cable that came with your camera. It may not be as slick as the Canikon tether programs but it will do the job and youll have your pics quickly loaded up. I always keep my 25 ft USB cable close at hand if Eye-fi is being bratty.

It'll work but be aware that it'll be slower than tethering, even on an 802.11n network but its definitely workable. Also, I suggest that you set up for a direct or ad-hoc connection rather than going through a router.

They Eye-fi is "compatible" with any camera that uses an SD card. They just haven't tested them with all cameras so they can't officially say it'll work.

Having trouble to shoot with black backdrop

Are you using an off camera hotshoe flash without a modifier (umbrella/softbox). The shadows look very well-defined and your subject is very contrasty which makes me believe this is the case as well. The softer light won't brighten your backdrop as much if you can't get a reasonable distance away from the paper as Deiberson and enoeske suggest (which is always your best shot). Also, Enoeske's example shows perfectly what softer light/distance from background can look like.
