overpriced lenses

A lot of posts in this thread have either resorted to oversimplification or hyperbole to voice their disagreement about Pentax lenses being overpriced.
"In relation to...?", people have asked. In relation to the fact that a lens like the FA50 which was $199 brand new when I bought it in early 2008 is now $358 at B&H as of 2:57AM and that sure as hell isn't "vintage"!
Whether you want to factor in currency fluctuations, material shortage, etc, its still hard to rationalize such a jump in price. Then when you take into account all the subsequent lenses being marked up to that same degree it makes you wonder exactly what your lens is actually "worth" and I'm not talking about one's individual opinion of a lens' value.
It seems to me that people say the lenses are overpriced because before 2009 you had the same (or actually better at times) quality of lenses at a cheaper price. People expect kit lenses and consumer zooms to be inexpensive but even their "quality" products were reasonable, not inexpensive, but reasonable. Then in 6 months people saw a jump in prices on lenses that have been in stock for over a year and in addition to that seeing QC problems multiply in newer products. It gave the impression that Pentax/Hoya wanted to be like Canikon in price only, but not to expect the same in quality. Which I think was while people were threatening to switch brands so often during that time.
No one was expecting "free" lenses or what I call a "Mercedes engine in a Ford Escort" but to at least see something to justify such a hike.
Agree or disagree, I'm just a guy with my opinion.

Facts about the Pentax brand name under Ricoh

I'll be curious to see if in the next couple of years there'll be more in the way of accessories for Pentax. Hopefully Radiopoppers/Pocketwizards will be compatible with PTTL as well as have more 3rd party lenses have the K mount (Tokina?)

Companies like Canon/Nikon seem to have no problem updating and generating new products and accessories, but it comes with a hefty price to the consumer. Pentax OTOH seemed to share a psychology with some particular posters on this board of "for the lower price you're paying, be glad youre getting THIS!" When you come to consider that the price differences are more or less gone I think people are due to have higher expectations. Hopefully Ricoh can meet them to a better degree than Hoya did. Pentax is too good a brand to let fester in under-achievement.

K10D to K-x and still not a better photographer

I think he's saying that because he wonders if your post is serious. Just like getting expensive cookware won't make you an Iron Chef, getting a more expensive camera doesn't automatically make you a better photographer. It comes off as an "Uncle Bob" statement, which anyone who has shot weddings can tell you is frustrating.

Why don't you post a couple of your submitted shots? If you need improvement in framing or exposure then even the most expensive Canikon's not going to help you. And of course, magazines and websites are going to exaggerate! That's the nature of marketing. They'll try to sell you something which is more profound than the Second Coming but then announce something better later that year. Reviews for real-life users will always be your best bet. That's why I'm not on the K-5 bandwagon yet.

I'm not saying it to be a jerk so please don't take offence. I'm saying it so you can have more realistic expectations. Throwing good money after bad is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.

K-7 seemed nice, but K-5 nicer

The K-7's AF is definitely snappier than the K20, and even better with the new firmware. However I never understood why people say the K-7 isn't as good with the competition's in low light. I've been able to get a fix on subjects lit with candles!
I think it has more to do with the lack of contrast rather than light. I've tried to focus on a solid white wall in full daylight and all the lenses cycle over and over. Same thing happens with trying to focus on a subject in black satin. But you give it almost any kind of contrast in your focus area and it'll lock. That's definitely fine by me!
