Is there any trick for doing longer exposure with shake reduction?

I don't know what they're called but I have one somewhere, one of those little photography things that get bought and never ever used - a small plate that attaches to the tripod mount with a cord that goes either on your belt or round the toe of your shoe. Get the length right and then pull upwards when shooting to stabilise.

Unfortunately Fujifilm overtook Pentax as the best APS-C lens system some years ago, partly due to the former's success and partly due to the latter branching out into FF. CaNikon always looked at APS-C as either only good for kit lenses or to get people to buy their huge, heavy & expensive FF lenses and then think try to pull them into a FF system, which not everyone wants. CaNikon continue this now with their mirrorless systems.

Of course the biggest problem now that APS-C has going for it is that many lenses (and cameras) are just as expensive, or more so, than FF equivalents, so in many cases you pay the same or more for a product that delivers less image quality, though you may still buy it for other reasons such as needing something small.

Something had to have been added because otherwise all the shots would overlap because the film is being advanced 50% less than in an unmodified 645.

On a K1 if you want to use legacy lenses you're pretty much limited to Pentax K or M42 mounts.

If you want more flexibility and the ability to adapt any vintage lens then you need a mirrorless camera rather than a DSLR.

I came in here looking for a challenge - some obscure mount that failed within a few short years of existence...

Nikon give-aways:

1. The double aperture values
2. The plastic bit inside the metal part of the mount with the connectors sideways instead of integrated into the metal mount as in Pentax and virtually everything else.
3. The protruding part on the aperture ring that starts between f/8 and f/11.

4. Oh, and the "NI" emblazoned on the aperture ring.....

I like small lenses because they allow me to carry more lenses with me :)

But I like big lenses because, well, they look cool. Not that little ones can't too, just a different type of cool.

I voted for more Limiteds because that can't possibly be a bad thing.

I have bought multiple used reels to ensure I have enough to alternate when doing a big developing session. I need to get around to selling the un-needed empty tanks they came in.

An MX and M 50mm is about as purist as it gets in my view. Lovely to walk around and shoot with.

Have a look on Flickr at one of the many groups. That often gets me inspired to at least get out.

I see two K-3 III groups but neither is very inspiring to be honest. I often find "I shoot film" to be the most inspiring.

I have come to like the 24mm field of view a lot more since I moved into FF, though I suppose that started with the DA 16-85mm for my last few years of APS-C.

I still haven't used this one as haven't had the opportunity but the intention is that it will be used equally on film and digital though I shoot far less film these days. On film I don't think the sharpness will be a problem at all.

Well my Yashica Mat 124Gs are significantly smaller and lighter than my Pentax 645 and 75mm lens. No-where near as flexible without interchangeable lenses but for travel it's a much better option. I'd say it's more enjoyable to use too.

A few days ago I ordered an apparently working KX with 55/1.8 for a good price. They arrived today - the mirror locked up on the first press of the shutter button and the lens is full of fungus. They've already started their journey back to the original owner for a refund.

Wow.

I think the most I've spent on a manual lens is about $165 for the K 30/2.8 or the M 85/2.

I wonder if the buyer will use it for more than taking pictures of his cats and food in restaurants...

:)

For 90mm FF you'd need a 60mm on APS-C and I don't think there are any. You've ordered the new camera for AF so manual lenses are out.

I'd say the DA 70mm f/2.4 is probably your best bet even though it's a bit longer.

Lots of people have asked for a smaller, pared-down DSLR to get something more akin to using an old film SLR. The problem is that everyone has different views on the features they would sacrifice to save space and weight.

Plus most reviewers would slate the camera for the absence of whatever modern feature we've learned to rely on.

I think it more accurate to say that without SR there's less potential for higher vignetting on one side of the image, with "side" being used to mean any dimension of the sensor - top/bottom, diagonal, whatever. Pretty much all lenses have some vignetting on the format for which they were designed. Shifting the sensor as part of the SR system may move the sensor more to one side, increasing the vignetting on one side of the image but decreasing it on the other side as that edge is pulled to a more central part of the image circle. The overall vignetting will therefore stay the same but may not be equal across the frame.

Vignetting is less noticeable on film because the reaction of a film emulsion to light is not linear in the way that digital is, Many film-era lenses will demonstrate less vignetting on film than they do on digital.

That's a very nigh level of noise in the OOF areas there. I don't generally shoot macro, especially not little bugs, and can understand the need for small apertures but do you need those high shutter speeds or could they be relaxed to lower the noise?

In my view 24x36 is certainly sufficiently low-fi already without chopping it in half. I've never used half-frame either but I've shot plenty of 24x36 and it's not a quality level I'd want to go below.

How about slap-bang in the middle?

I see a lot of Mirandas in there. I've had quite a few myself as I search for a camera for them that actually works.

Of the old fully mechanical top-grade 35mm SLRs the XR seems to be the least common by far but I don't know why. They're very rare and so go for very high prices when I've seen them for sale.

You "don't like Minolta's" as in you don't like their prisms or finders, or do you mean you "don't like Minoltas" (without the apostrophe) as in Minolta cameras in general?

Aside from Leica (obviously) Canon has the most expensive FF mirrorless gear. If you want something much more reasonably priced and with lenses from Tamron or Sigma, which are much cheaper, then go for the L-mount or Sony's E mount.

Looking at the prices of new Pentax gear I don't see it as particularly expensive compared to the nearest equivalents from other brands. If I compare the prices to what they were when I first bought into Pentax then it's all very expensive now, but that's inflation and the implosion of the beginner market.

The problems I see with value in new Pentax gear is that in general there's no middle ground with the lenses, by which I mean good quality (but not the best) for a reasonable price. The type of lenses a hobbyist like myself would generally buy, not the best but not junk. Take 50mm, there's the 50/1.8, the FA 50/1.4 and the DFA 50/1.4. Now on paper you have a lower end, middle and high end, something for everyone, except the FA is a 60-year-old optical design with a 35-year-old focus system and while faster than the DAL it's no better optically. There's a gulf between that and the DFA. A true middle-ground 50mm would be DFA (not *) 50mm f/1.8 with an in-lens focus motor and would be sharp wide open. That's essentially what other brands have in their systems and at a similar price to the FA.

I love my old DA Limiteds but the refreshed HD ones, for the prices they go for new now, should have been modernised to add in-lens focus motors. The same goes for the refreshed HD FA 35/2 and 50/1.4. Just that change would have been enough to throw off a lot of the "Pentax is out-dated" view a lot of people have.
