A comparison of M series 50s plus the K 50mm 1.2

This thread prompted me to get my M 50/2.0 out for an impromptu portrait session with Rudy.

Pentax really didn't make a bad 50 in that era.

The M 28/2.8 is plentiful and cheap, but if you want real class go for the M 28/2.0 or K 28/3.5

If money is no object go for the Hollywood K 28/2.0

The M 20/4 is excellent as mentioned above, as is the K 18/3.5. If you really want a fun lens have a look at the K 15/3.5. It has a built in hood but that is hopeless when the sun is shining. Use your hand as a shade and you will get a lot of ultra wide goodness..............

Moving this post to the K-3 III forum.......

With the K-3 III and a manual lens like the M series, set the camera to Av mode, and set the aperture on the lens. When you press the shutter button two thing happen..........

1 the camera stops down the lens, takes a meter reading, and assigns a shutter speed.

2 The camera then takes the shot

You can also use the camera in Manual mode and press the green button to get the camera to assign a shutter speed, and then you press the shutter button to take the shot.

I think high end professional work is done in TIFF.

OK here is my two-pennyworth...........

The old manual focus wide angle lenses all had a distance scale number (10feet/3 metres) and an f-stop (f8) etched in red, instead of white. This was a quick way to set your lens up for hyperfocal distance focussing. Set the distance to 10 feet and the f stop to f8, and everything in your image from about 5 feet to infinity will be in acceptable focus. This will work well for wide landscapes and closer scenes. There will be an argument that if you use an aps-c sensor the f-stop should be one stop slower (f-11). Give this a try when you next go out shooting and you don't have to worry about focussing at all !

For scenes where you want to use a wider aperture for subject isolation there are two methods I suggest which should be better than using your eyesight to judge through the viewfinder with a manual lens.............

1. Set the camera to AF. When your subject is in-focus the green hexagon should illuminate, and the camera will beep if you have that set up in "sounds". Remember you are using SPOT centre AF point only, so this needs to be over the subject.

2. Use the Live View mode on the camera zoomed to 100% I find this works best if you use a tripod. You have the ability to examine the subject on the zoomed image before you take the shot. The subject need not be central, as you can move the 100% view around. As you turn the focus ring you can clearly see your subject come into or go out of sharp focus. This is my preferred method for manual lenses when subject isolation is important.

As someone who has an extensive collection of old manual focus lenses and the original FA 31 I would say this........

For wide view landscapes it will not perform any better than the M or A series 28/2.8 lenses when stopped down to f8 or f11. Where the FA 31/1.8 really shines is for close subject isolation at wider apertures, where the 3D "pop" effect is really noticeable.

When you are exporting as a jpeg the file size will shrink considerably, especially as the image has very few colours.

I just tried exporting an old shot of the moon from DNG to jpeg. The DNG was 36.6 MB, the jpeg was 838 KB. It wont affect your ability to print it.

Probably it fails to make a good connection when set to 400, due to age. A service would probably sort it out although there is a workaround. Set it to ASA 200 (if using ISO 400 film) and then underexpose by one stop

Not specifically related to the K3 III but I only ever use AF-C when tracking a moving subject (runner/car/dog). For most of my other photography I will always use AF-S.

If you are using a focus/recompose method to take a shot of a static subject, AF-C will often focus on the wrong spot. I know a number of photographers like to use back-button AF only, and so when focussed on the subject will release the AF button and then any recompose will not affect the AF. I prefer to use shutter button half-press for focus, so AF-C would not work for me in this situation.

If you actually looked at what Ricoh/Pentax have said in their numerous press releases you would have read..... "we are developing a K-1 III but due to component issues it is taking longer than we expected"

I understand that you may not have seen these, but am pointing it out lest your comments be seen as brand bashing.

......and expensive !

The D-FA 24-70/2.8 is a good choice if f2.8 is needed, but something like the D-FA 28-105/3.5-5.6 would be more practical and less expensive.

If you can find one I would also recommend an old-un..... FA 24-90/3.5/4.5. Excellent optics, great zoom range. I wish i had never sold mine

ps moved the thread to lens discussion.

If you do sports or wildlife photography that is very true.

For most other photography like landscape or architectural, or portrait that is pretty irrelevant.

Sometimes one needs to ask the question .....is it my skills that are lacking ?

Ok. So far we have one translation from one Japanese retailer leading to the conclusion the K3 III has been discontinued. Just the Black version, that is. Perhaps they ran out of black paint?

The main Ricoh/Pentax site has it listed as in current production. Every retailer in Europe/UK still has it listed and in stock.

Really guys :)
