The 60-250 isn't the fastest focusing lens in out there - although it does focus better on the K5 than my old K10. It has the capability to take wonderful pictures - better than most of my other lenses. I use the lens quite a bit, however, because it has a great range for what I do (nature and sports). However, I do not use that lens as a manual lens as I find it not as comfortable to use as other lenses. If I'm shooting sports (or hummingbirds or other things moving fast) I go with a 135mm or 200mm prime lens ('70s Vivitars) because they are faster, designed for manual focusing (i.e. the 60-250 is a thick lens), and fit better.
That being said, my Canikon friends laugh at me because they say their cameras can auto-focus on 'any' moving subject. With my K10 I agree with them. I do not agree with my K5. Even with my K10, I found I took better shots (more saved shots) than they would because manual focus makes me pick the shot instead of see how many times the shutter will turn before my buffer fills.
For travel, I take 3 lenses: the DA* 60-250, my 55mm Tak, and my 12-24. They are a bit bigger then some other options, but it covers pretty much any need I'd have. Since the 60-250 is such a go-to lens of mine, I have to recommend it. But, keep in mind it does have it's limitations with manual focusing and it's a big lens. You'll get good photo quality from it tho as long as you know how to use it.

I can hardly wait! I've been waiting for a long Pentax lens for a looooooong time. I was almost ready to buy the Sigma 500mm, but now I'm going to have to wait until this comes out and see how the quality is. I know it's not a * lens, but one of my favorite newer lenses is the 12-24 and that's not a * lens either. Couple that with a TC and Pentax just filled a gap that has been left empty for way too long. I sure hope both are awesome quality! I just wish the 560mm was a bit faster, but I can live with what they are offering if the quality is there.
Yay Pentax!!!!

Thanks Wizofoz. I am enjoying the camera quite a bit. I haven't tossed any of my manual lenses on it yet, but it handled my DA 60-250 this weekend with ease in all the modes I tried. I am particularly impressed with the autofocus capabilities...my K10D doesn't compare in any way, shape, or form to that capability.

I just took the plunge and updated from a K10d to the K5 (couldn't beat the Cyber Monday prices...). I'm on page 42 of the manual (going over how to use the menus) and what I'm seeing in the camera is not even close to what is on that page. For example, I have 2 pages in capture mode on the camera. The book says there are supposed to be 5. I only have the ones starting with (page 1) file format and (page 2) live view. Most of those items are grayed out. The custom menu options the book discusses doesn't even exist in the menus I'm looking at in the camera.
It also won't let me change to RAW and, when skipping through the index to change all the items it says needs to be changed, I found most of those items don't exist in the menus.
Does anyone know what is going on?

There are a lot of things I agree with in this article, but there's a few things that seemed to be self-serving also. $10k+ of equipment does not make a good photographer. $1000s in computer and PP equipment does not make a good PP'ing setup or even experience. Each couple needs to decide for themselves what they want and what they can afford...it's really that simple....then make the best of what they have.
The other piece, however, is practice does make perfect. Being a wedding guest does not make a good wedding photographer (although I will admit there is an extremely small subset of photographers who do have a natural eye...note the word small). Contracts and insurance are always good ideas. Knowing what the wedding couple wants along with how/when to get that shot is essential and again has a need for experience both as a photographer and a businessperson. What people forget in these situations is the wedding couple want a service and a product delivered. This is an emotional situation for them due to the situation. Those two things mean anyone who jumps up to volunteer without having photographed a wedding previously should do so VERY cautiously.

Welcome!
While all of your shots are nice (great use of lines in them), I REALLY like the sunset shots with the boats. I've always had a soft spot for rays of sun streaming through clouds and that picture captures it beautifully.

Penquin, what are you trying to show and what kind of cars are you shooting? For classics, I'd think something complementary would work well - such as the stockyards over in Fort Worth on the historic streets there and perhaps in black and white if the textures / lines fit well. Just a thought, but DFW is a big place with plenty of options - it all comes down to how you want to portray the cars.
I just moved back to Plano after a few years hiatus in Utah, but there are lots of great places that should work.

These external drives are very interesting. While not optimal, they certainly provide the option of a file system with the tablets.

Just my hso, but the tree doesn't look like it is in focus. While I realize it's a cloudy day, there's not a lot of contrast either and everything seems muted. While the lens has some to do with that, setting the camera WB to cloudy will help pull out more contrast in the original picture. IMO, it's a mediocre shot - blurry, lack of contrast, etc. While I wouldn't necessarily throw the lens out without some playing around with it to see in which the lens shines (if it can...). I have a Vivitar that absolutely sucks in bright sunlight, but is my go-to lens when it's cloudy as I like it's pics better than my 60-250 in muted conditions.

Yeah, sad but almost always true. From what I'm seeing, most tablets out there - via some type of 3rd party application - can do basics. Basics being viewing the shot, viewing EXIF data, basic editing, and in some cases sync'ing with LR or Aperture. What I'm not seeing as a consistent offering is a robust file system (I don't consider under a Gig a robust file system).
As such, the solution I was hoping for doesn't seem to exist. The new tablet from Archos may fit a chunk of this need, but I'm not willing to jump on the Archos bandwagon until I can read reviews and hold it in my hands. However, many photographers out there have been able to use standard tablets without a robust file system pretty effectively with workarounds. Based on what I've read here, I need to re-evaluate. :)

Heh. Camera...lenses...they had the whole package. My Asahi lenses are some of my favorite lenses in my collection. I also have a great amount of pride explaining to the Canikon folks that my 50-60 year old lens takes better shots than their $1000 new lens :)
