Thanks everyone!

This tuesday I had plans to go to one of the stores in my area to test a few tripods. But as a entrepreneur things can change rapidly, and i had to meet one of my companions that day. So now I'll have to pick a new day somewhere soon.
Hopefully next tuesday! I've kept my schedule clear for that day... * fingers crossed!

Sorry for the late reply, and thank you for the generous offer to test my system on your tripod. I've tried this particular tripod (with a standard ballhead) in the store a while back and it was in the controlled environment of the store that I felt the limit of the tripod was a little to close for comfort. So I don't think it compares to the carbonversion which I've still haven't tested in real-life. But I'll keep the nice invitation in my mind. And i'm curious what your experiences are with this particular setup.

@atinq9, I couldn't agree more, but there is a limit for me. I can't save money forever because there is always a better, pricier system which will exceed expectations. But the bottomline is, and thats my idea too, better spend a little more than be sorry! :)

Thank you Paul for this usefull insight. Feisol wasn't on my list yet, and I've found a few stores in my area where they sell them. I'll certainly look into it.

Some times when I use my very cheap, crappy tripod on the lowest position I'am able to make 4s exposures with my macrolens without problem. Can't fight physics forever, so i'am convinced that almost every tripod i'll buy will be a huge progression forward for me...

This is also pretty usefull insight. To begin, I'm trying to find a solution which serves both portability and sturdiness. If my wishes in weight and such are unrealistic then I'll have to haul more weight evidently. But if I can find that one tripod which is just the right combination...

Thanks everyone! I'm planning a trip to one store(consumer to enhousiast level) tomorrow morning, and next week on tuesday to another one (enthousiast to pro level)

Thanks both!

I know there are limitations, the question will be if an upgrade either of budget (spend more) or heavier tripod will solve these problems. And by how much, my first budget was around €250 total, tripod + head. I know this is a no go area, unless going for a second hand would be a viable option. Which is an option, but the problem with that is that comparing products will be a problem, no Gitzo, Manfrotto models to setup next to eachother. So maybe I'am a little biased, but buying a new product in a store has my preference. And since a good tripod will outlive me, I am willing to spend a little more for a new tripod.

@mazwick, interesting, so this is also true for my 120mm macro, where subtle movements are even more visible. Do you notice any difference in the height you're shooting from? What is the weight of this combo? My 645 + 120mm will have a total weight of 2200gr.

There are so many tripods to choose from and the ones I tried were not stable enough to hold a Pentax 645 with any lens between 35mm-200mm. So I did two things, I raised my budget, i'm now in the market for a tripod w/o or with head in the range €300-€500, where the upper part of this range would benefit from a deal with ballhead. And I've tried to come up with a list of specs I would really like.

I'd like to find a tripod which weights in at max. 1,8-2,0 kilos or 3,5-4,0LBS (is that right?), capable of getting really low for landscapes, macro and other cool perspectives. Height is nice to have, I'm 195cm (6ft5) long, but I prefer stability over maximum height. At the "normal" heights the tripod must be able to carry a 645, with my A120mm Macro, my A35mm and preferably as nice to have for future purposes, maybe a longer telephoto lens. I'll also be using the tripod with my K-5.
I'm likely going to hike a lot with the tripod, it is getting dirty, into water, mud, sand whatever. The weight is pretty important therefore.

I've read a few topics about my particular question on PF, but the mentioned typenumbers are not available anymore or maybe there are some different models for EU markets and VS?

My approach: visiting shops with my own list of wishes and I have some models I would like to see:

Manfrotto 055cxPRO3 *my current favorite on paper
Manfrotto 190csPRO3 *lighter than the 055, but also weaker and will not get as high, plus the max load is lower.
Gitzo??
... Others to come.

I'll hope to get some input from you guys, because everytime when I'm going for some tests I notice that I know to little about the cons and pros of each model... Thanks in advance!

I would let them know they made a mistake, if their serious about their business they will appreciate the feedback.

My freshly developed Kodak 125 PX film, shot with my 645 and 120mm Macro lens. Developed in T-Max, scanned with my Epson V500

Finally found some time to scan my last roll of film. While scanning I found out the lab scratched most pictures, well I wasn't happy with the results so no big deal. This is the first time in about 30 films, so I'll hope it won't happen again.

Here you can see the scratches in the top left corner (crop):

Shot on Fuji Pro 400h with my p645 and 75mm f2.8, scanned with my Epson v500

Same process, only this was shot with my 120mm f4 Macro, and unfortunatly slightly out of focus

Tomorrow i'll develop a roll of b/w, when scanned I'll post them here.

So far for your RAID 1 redundancy I guess

I don't use the same drives for storage and backups, and I'll use only hardware RAID controllers. No problems yet

Is there a good reason to go for a 45 and or 55?

I don't think we can decide whether or not you should buy a certain lens. Practically you will gain focallength coverage, but will you really take all these lenses with you on each trip? I know I will not, and I've got almost every lens in the 35mm-200mm range, except the leafshutter lenses.

But on the other hand i am able to have a good day of shooting bringing only one lens with me, or two. Sometimes I won 't touch a lens for months and then I decide to just bring that particular lens with me, and I find the nicest sweetspots with these lenses.

So this is a peronal issue I guess, and if you can afford it you should give them a try.

I'm still printing in my darkroom. But most of my negatives are scanned and from those scans i make a selection of negatives which i want to print. It is a very timeconsuming process but this is the only way to have total control over your image, and it's very rewarding when you see your enlargement hanging on the wall.

I print only MF, but i am trying to find me a 4X5 enlarger, but they are pretty scarce overhere.

I feel lucky indeed, the images were taken with my A35mm f3.5. I'm quite happy with the lens, and with the rest of my new set. The price was also pretty amazing, However the lens shows some distortion, but at very low levels, I did not have to correct these images for barrel distortion.

A few days ago I received my second P645, this time accompanied by two lenses I was looking for, the A35mm f3.5 and the A120mm f4 Macro. The entire set contained a 75mm and 55mm which are in a far better shape than the ones I allready had. So it seems a bit redundant to have two simmilar sets, but I like it!

Some shots, for testing purposes, so again, all shot around the corner from where i live. Shot on Kodak 125PX, developed in Kodak T-max, scanned with my Epson v500, no PP except contrast correction to compensate for scanning.

@Tuco: thanks! The Fuji Provia was pretty old and since I wanted to use some slidefilm for macro shots soon, I shot this roll of film for testing purposes. As a bonus I am happy with some shots.

Whoops, missed this one, sorry about that. I was also suprised about the results from the Ilford 3200, and the result could be better on a bigger resolution, but I'm still learning how to properly scan my negatives.

The speckels on the enlargements are just some dust/i-don't-know-what-material particles sitting on the negative mask from my enlarger. If I just had the patience to carefully remove them this would have been a clean image.

Thank you, about the camera; It's a Certo Dollina, I believe it's from 1936. It's made by a manufacturer from Dresden, Germany.

Nice shots people!

My contribution:

Shot with Pentax 645 on Ilford delta 3200, developed in Kodak t-max, scanned with Epson v500

Same story here, except these are shot on Kodak 125px, scanned from (very dusty :o) enlargements

Thanks for your reply. I use a v500 from Epson, and their scanninf software as well. A few days ago I downloaded trialversions of Silverfast and Vuescan. These interfaces really need some attention to get used to.
PP is done in PSE8, mostly colorcorrections and sharpening. But i'm still learning...

For B&W I still prefer darkroomprints, I'll see if I can find some examples to share.

Wow, that's sharp...

About scanning: is 1200dpi a good resolution for most images? Because most of the time I scan at 2400dpi, but when I look at this cropped picture I can't see why I should scan at that specific resolution.
May I ask what software you used?

I've been shooting my Pentax 645 for over a year now, so i decided to buy me a scanner. Unfortunatly being on a tight budget I bought not my first choice, the epson v700, but the cheaper v500. I'm very happy with the results so far. So I would like to share them with you guys.

45mm

150mm

45mm

In my enthousiasm I didn't bother the dust on the negatives. I will soon try some other scanning software. These photo's were all scanned using the epson scanning software, I might upgrade to vuescan or silverfast soon. PP is done in PSE9.

My b/w images will be scanned from darkroom prints, but I've been busy lately so I'll post them soon.

Overhere I never used it before because I didn't know it even existed. Prices in Europe are much higher as in the USA. Kodak 125PX is somewhat the cheapest film overhere. Sure there are bargains, but in my direct neighborhood I don't seem to find anything much more cheaper than this film.

Very soon I will try ADOX.

A few weeks ago I got myself Kodak PX125. The results were stunning. Nice contrasts, rich blacks and very nice grain. Why isn't this film mentioned as much as the others. Not only here but also on Flickr, APUG etc this film seems rare.

Kodak t-max is also one of the favorites. I mostly use the 100iso variant. I'm planning on trying more films soon. I'm very curious what Ilford fp5 would do for me.

I develop and print my own films in my home-darkroom. For me that's the way to achieve the rich and fat B&W tone I like so much. Unfortunately I don't own a scanner right now, it's on my wishlist. That way we could make testshots with different films and build ourselves a database.

No problem! Make sure you bring a very sturdy tripod. The 645 is heavy.

Good luck!
