Are the potassium permaganate crystals more effective than silica gel? I remember potassium permaganate using in some experiments with my childhoods chemistry kit.
Your arguments sound reasonable Phil1 - I don't think I want an oxidizer next to my gear.

I'm about to order a short-wave UV lamp. I will put the lamp and lenses in a dedicated room and air the room after a longer drying-session to get rid of the ozone, similar to the usage of laser printers. Right?

Good question - I was asking myself the same. When something is sold as WR then how long can it resist in a humid environment? Does WR mean that your lens has to be always mounted on the lens? What's the difference in handling of a WR lens compared with the handling of common lens in a humid environment?
I was afraid that something like this may happen in a tropic environment - that's why I spend quite some money to have a WR equipment.
Today I've called a Pentax service partner - they first told me that they can't believe that there is Fungus in the lens. First they where like "Uhm..Fungus..what's that?" ;-) They told me to have lenses which fell into water and those lenses had corrosion/rust issues. But never Fungus. They also don't take my lenses for repair as they are afraid that their equipment gets contaminated. But I've read on a German forum that some independent repair centers/private people to this job. But I'm afraid they are not able to deal with a WR lens with special sealings.
Well, now my lenses are exposed to European humidity only. I read that the dormant level is about 60% so you have to keep in under this value. Some users said if the humidity is too low (under 30% when I remember right) this can also damage your lens coating. Actually I don't know the humidity at home - I've to check and if needed build such a cabinet.
Absolutely agree that WR doesn't mean weather proof. The lenses where never exposed to rain too long. But when wet air destroys a weather resistent lens already I'm not sure how much you can rely on such a feature.
Dunno if there's a lens skin - but what I read out of the other posts is that the weak part is the back of the lens - when it's not mounted on the camera.

Yes my Tamrac backbag has lot's of these paddings. Hence it seems contraproductive to store your stuff in such a bag.

Well I met locals which used a cabinet with a light-bulb to keep their electronics dry and safe. In India you often have to be happy if you have even electricity. The worst thing I have experienced was a one week power-cut due to a cyclone. At that time it was raining heavily, going out of the house was highly dangerous because of falling trees. And the air was so humid that all clothes inside the house where soaked with water. When opening my MacBook there was mist all over the display. Luckily it survived. As soon the sun came back of course I was drying all my stuff. So in such cases silica gel packages are quite useless - when everything is wet. A friend had these Pelican boxes - but they are big and bulky and you cannot just put them in your backbag. It is clear to me that these where not the best circumstances to prevent fungus.
I'd love to know what i can do -now- to save my beloved DA* 50-135mm.

Yes of course they where not always mounted on the camera. So I understand they where exposed to high humidity.
But when travelling it's not possible to carry a dehumidifier or a box with a bulb with you. Especially when you try to keep your luggage as light as possible. :)
Yes whenever I've checked them they where absolutely dry. So I was wondering if they are working at all.
This does only work to prevent fungus - it doesn't let it disappear, doesn't it?
So it would be great if you could tell me if a camera repair center could heal them at all. What I read was that most lens companies don't offer such a service themselves. So I must rely on a 3rd party repair center. But I'm afraid they won't be able to deal with a WR lens and the mentioned collimation. And the expected price...

-How would you rate the look overall?
3/5 for the pure black color scheme.
Initially I wanted to give a 2 but looking at it several times I find it somewhat okay.
-Does the 40mm fit the camera well?
It fits the camera which doesn't mean it's too beautiful. I would prefer the existing 40mm Limited. I don't understand why one should need a new 40mm just matching the excentric design of the K-01. IMO A camera should be designed to fit most available lenses.
-Are you planning on buying one based on what you've read about it in the official announcement?
No.
I'm waiting for a K-5 successor.
-In buying a camera, how important is the look compared to the features? Very important, somewhat important, or unimportant?
From a fashion perspective totally unimportant. But the look of a camera should not represent fashion values. Pentax stated serveral times that they want to be different, that they want to be for cameras what Apple is for computers. But differences alone is not a selling argument. Form IS function, the form should serve the tool hence design is very important. When a potential buyer sees a camera it should get an idea how it feels like in hands, how it feels to operate the camera. When seeing the K-01 I don't have a good feeling. This "chimney" disturbs the eye - same for the color contrast. The pure black color scheme is the best. Furthermore it looks clumsy.
For instance the K-7/K-5 body has am incredible design - Please Pentax get those designers back. Btw. I don't even know who designed the K-7 body. A good product doesn't need to advertise using the name of the designer. A good product advertises itself. Whenever a product is advertised with "Designed by..." I get the feeling either the manufacturer tries to play away some discrepancies or tries to sell it as a fashion statement with a higher margin.
-How do you think people who've never heared of Pentax would react to this camera?
I think most of them will think it's ugly.
Overall I think it's a product designed for the Q market segment (fashion statement + interchangeable lenses) but for those consumers it may be too expensive.

WR was one of the major reasons to buy a Pentax SLR. But after spending more than 1 year in India I'm trusting not too much in WR anymore. Lately I've noticed quite some Fungus in my DA* 16-50mm and DA* 50-135mm. From time to time those lenses got wet due to a sudden Monsoon rain but I have always dried the lenses right afterwards. And when not being used they where stored in my camera bag with lots of silica gel bags. So I don't understand how this could have happened... :(
I don't understand how a lens which is sold as WR does not survive the moisture in the tropical zone. Fortunately the IQ is still very good, especially with the 50-135mm.
Do you have any tips how I should proceed - Is it possible to save these lenses from dying a painfull death?
When Pentax claims the lenses are weather-resistent, do they also guarantee that such a case can't happen?

The Sigma sounds good though I would even prefer to be more closer to 20mm. Don't know why - I have no video experience - but I find a wide-angle video frame more pleasant - feels like as you would be in that scene. it's not so compressed.

So far my favority lens for shooting K-7 video is the DA* 16-50mm. Good focal length coverage, big zoom and focus ring, great IQ and works very well with the SR in video mode. But there are some things I'm missing:
- A very smooth zoom to experiment with zooming techniques. The 16-50mm jumps a bit / is a bit tight when you turn the ring - sometimes it's going faster and sometimers harder to zoom.
- A wider aperture. With F2.8 it's great for day-light scenes but for low light/night scenes I guess one would need a F1.4. Most of my LL recordings are dark and noisy (I haven't worked with exposure lock yet).
But most lenses with F1.4 are around 50mm. I found myself more in the 16mm to 30mm range when playing with video (freehand/monopod). The only one I found in that space is the Kiron 24mm F2 but hard to get I think and it's a prime.
Do you think Pentax could even release a dedicated video lens as the GH1 is offered with? Whould love to hear your thoughts - what's your favourite, versatile video lens for the K-7 by now?

I'm doing the same with my Sigma 105mm Macro with moving back and forth. Whenever I see such close-ups like yours I'm wondering if those lenses have a higher magnification than 1:1. I think I have to crop to come that close.

No, same here: the pinky is only half on the grip. So the pinky gets quite tensed up after a while with heavy lenses. But in general I like the grip (depth) very much.

Smaller lenses like the 16-50mm are just fine, same as Limiteds I guess ;-)
Remember as Pentax outlined the K-7 was specifically designed to go better with Limited lenses and what I have seen the fit very well, same as older lenses.
