I had an avid outdoor photographer buddy of mine suggest that after your day of shooting in cold temperatures, take your jacket / parka off outside your door (just before you go in!), wrap your camera and lenses in the jacket with the cold side in and stick the bundle someplace in your house where it can warm up gradually. I think he meant wrap up the whole camera bag in the jacket. This will allow everything to warm slowly and reduce any condensation (he advocated about 2 hours, as others have suggested here).
I keep a glove with missing fingertips in my camera bag to replace my mitt or glove for my right hand while shooting in cold weather.

I was just sent a link to an interesting camera clip system for carrying and quickly accessing SLRs. Has anybody seen anything like this? Essentially it is a clip system that attaches your camera by the tripod mount to your belt or backpack shoulder strap. It is not in full scale production... yet . He has produced 100 units so far. The inventor is seeking investment money via the link below. There is a video demonstrating the product at the same link. Capture Camera Clip System by Peter Dering — Kickstarter |

My daughter next to some artistic grafitti. I used Lightroom to crop and get the high-contrast B&W effect.

glee46 - that Adobe vid is great - thanks for posting.
When I bought my K-5 I switched it over to DNG right away. I shoot PEF on my K100d - but convert it to DNG when I import into Lightroom. Its not that I don't trust PEF files, but Lightroom is the core of my workflow so it makes sense to use DNG and I like supporting Open Standards whenever I can.

I had nothing but MF lenses on my K-5 the first day I fired it up. lenses: 50mm f/1.7 and 300mm f/4.
Both worked quite well in low and regular light. I pretty much relied on the focus "beep" and it seemed accurate and crisp. I played with live view, but I didn't shoot while using it.

Awesome movie leadfoot! Just the sort of thing I thought the intervalometer would be useful for, but I never thought of focusing on stars. I would like to point my K-5 at a market or public suqare and shoot a picture every second or so (and create a movie from the results).
Anybody want to send me to Istanbul or London to give it a try? :)

As explained by Zack Arias (and I am paraphrasing); Chimping means looking at the back of your camera. He used an example of sports photographers sitting in pack on the sidelines and looking a the back screen after every shot and and going 'ooo ooo' (sounding like chimpanzees).

Thank you both! That does make sense. I should review my flash manual again :p.
I bought the flash on sale before the price jump for a particular set of applications, and since I don't know much about flash photography I didn't delve too deep in the manual.
It will be a fun tool to experiment with. Now I just need to get it off camera...

I have a K100d and I wanted to know how the shutter curtain worked (vertical or horizontal). I've been reading a bit about how you can use faster shutter speeds than your camera's sync speed if you don't mind some shadow in the frame where the training (leading?) curtain covers the flash area.
I attached my AF 540FGZ to see if it worked any better (manual mode 1/4 power). If I used manual or Tv mode on the camera, the camera took pictures at 1/4000 sec - they looked OK, but I found that the flash reset to P-TTL mode. How does this work? How am I able to take a visible picture at 1/4000 when the K100d is supposed to have a sync speed of just 1/180?
Thank you in advance!
Geoff

I don't have a similar lens set, but I do have a K100d and I will be upgrading within a year (hopefully). I've started saving. I plan on getting the K-7 and I will be keeping the K100d as a backup body (I'm quite happy with the performance of it).
I interested in seeing the low light results of the K-7 but everything else is a no-brainer (for what I want out of a camera). I like the alloy body, weather sealing and size of the K-7 (I'll have to hold one before buying, of course). The stats all look great and the video is an added bonus. I know I'll make use of the 1/8000 shutter speed and the extra Frames Per Second.
I'd consider a K20 if the price was right and it felt better in my hand, but I have my sights fixed on the K-7, so I doubt I'll second guess myself in the store.

Thanks for the video link Ben!
I wish Pentax would actually advertise the K-7 like that. I posted this in another thread a week (or so) ago... "This is more of a suggestion... With the nicely compact all metal body, weather seal, cold resistance, faster FPS rate AND 1/8000th shutter speed Pentax really needs to market this camera in outdoor sports or National Geographic type magazines. The K-7 has extraordinary adventure travel potential. Couple that with the battery grip that accepts AA's and HD video and its a real no-brainer.
..and of course if you stumble across a clean SMC Pentax-A 20mm F2.8 in a street market in Dakar for $50 - you can just clip it on the front of your K-7 , no worries about it's compatibility. :D "
I haven't pre-ordered one, but I have started saving... Maybe after Christmas (or for Christmas!)
Cheers,
Geoff

Again, thank you for all the attention you're giving to the questions here.

First.. JCPentax thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions. I'm a k100d user and the K-7 is looking more and more like my next camera. I was saving for an FA 77 limited, but I'll put that off for another year or so. Maybe the prices will come back down – hint hint. ;)
1. Weather resistant - Does this mean it will take moderate or heavy rain or even immersion (close to surface)?
2. Cold resistant (I'm from Winnipeg.. -10c isn't really cold) :) but is that fully functional to -10c? I guess the weather sealed lenses help with the condensation problem when cameras come back in from the cold.
3. Battery grip can use 6 AA's. Do they power the K-7 if the primary battery is dead? I'm thinking extended periods away from available or reliable recharge power. AA's are easy to pack and readily available.
Electronic level function – no question, just a big thank you.. thank you.. thank you!
Cheers,
Geoff

I thought digital cameras had serious noise (because of heat) on exposures over a minute or so. I haven't tried a star trail myself, and now I'll have to wait until spring, but I've been attracted to this kind of photography for a few months.
Someone referred me to this site Startrails for software to help layer several shorter exposures into a longer star trail.
By the way - excellent info in this thread - thanks to everyone.

I LOVE having Auto Focus, but I find myself using manual focus more and more on my K100d - even with the AF Kits lenses I have. I use AF for the everyday Point-and-shoot type shots, most of what I shoot, but manual focus gives me more control over the effect I want. For example, shooting though the netting at our local ballpark (Winnipeg Goldeyes); AF wanted to focus on the net and not the action more than half the time (kit DA 50-200). Perhaps I was doing something wrong, but Manual focus worked much better getting the shots I wanted.
It is so very nice to hear the "beep" and see the "in focus" circle when in Manual focus mode, just to backup my eye. The focus indicators seem to be pretty accurate. That beep is very useful for my manual lenses as well, but I am tempted by the split screen as well. :;)

Does Pentax give any reason why leaving SR on would induce blur on a tripod? Seems like a strange thing for a SR system to do. I generally leave SR on ALL the time. I can understand why you want it off for panning, but I missed the manual's recommendations for turning it off while mounted on a tripod.

My name is Geoff and I'm a software designer / analyst (plus some tech support) for a small insurance company in Winnipeg, Canada.
I married a Pentaxian 16 years ago (ME Super plus various lenses). I've loved photography for some time, mostly as a spectator, but hadn't caught the "full" photography bug until a year ago. I started pining for a digital SLR and decided on Pentax after looking at several manufacturers. Pentax lens compatibility helped in selling my wife on the digital concept, and we started saving for the *istDL2. I bought my (our) K100 in October of last year. My wife describes herself as "old school". When we finish our basement we're planning on building a small B&W darkroom. ;) We're tossing around the idea of taking a B&W photography / developing course and we bought an MX (with a nice smc-a f1.7 50mm lens) to that end (we both can't use the ME super).
I'm into woodworking and raising kids as well (the latter not so much a hobby as 2nd career).

I've enjoyed this thread quite a bit.. Thank you Ben.
I've never tried any lighting other than natural (do overhead tungsten bulbs count as natural). I am interested in starting to play more with lighting - play leading to actually getting good at reading what needs to be lit and how.
I have one light so far, a surplus CBC halogen studio light with barn doors, but I've been using it as a work light.
My specific questions are: How did you light these three shots? Islam Orthodox Close Up Christian Cover
(particularly the last one - the placement and purity of the light is... well... wow!)
