16-85 one-sided fuzziness in some images at the wide end

I bought my copy early 2015. The first year I could not see any fuzziness when mounted on a K-30. In 2018 I noticed it for the first time. The fuzziness was on the righthand side at infinity, clearest at 85mm. There was hardly any fuzziness at closer distances. After having it serviced the fuzziness was on the right hand side in the range 16-28mm at infinity.

I have had a critical look at my pictures to see if there is any fuzziness. None in 2015 and 2016, but in 2017 I could find some pictures with some slight fuzziness on the righthand side. But nothing to worry about. In one picture at 85mm focussed at infinity the fuzziness is in the foreground but less so in the background. My feeling is that the lens deteriorates very slightly in the course of time.

16-85 one-sided fuzziness in some images at the wide end

It only happens with faulty lenses:lol:

Mine showed the same fuzziness, also on the right hand side. At first I was in the range 60-85mm. I wanted to have it adjusted and sent it to Rudiger Maerz in Hamburg. When I got it back it was perfect in the range 60-85mm, but after taking some pictures I noticed fuzziness in the range 16-28mm. Focussing was OK before it sent it to Hamburg but when I had it back focssing was jumpy.

upgrade from 16-85mm to 16-50mm plm on K-3 II

The DA*16-50mm is not an upgrade to the DA16-85mm. They are two different lenses.

I used the DA16-85mm until I noticed that the righthand side was not sharp at 85mm. I sent it to Rudiger Maerz in Hamburg to have it adjusted but the righthand side is still unsharp in the range 16-28mm. Now I use a DA17-70mm.

I use both the DA*16-50mm PLM and the DA17-70mm. When the weather is fine I prefer the DA17-70mm because of its range and lighter weight. For a walkaround lens the PLM*16-50mm is quite heavy to walk around with it all day.

I use the DA*16-50mm PLM on a K-3-ii and it works fine. Excellent IQ.

Tokina 12-24mm

I had a Tokina 12-24mm for my Canon Digital Rebel in 2005-2006. It is built like a tank: a bit more massive than the Pentax 12-24mm. The Tokina 12-24mm and the Pentax 12-24mm are practically the same, optically speaking. Good IQ, but beware of the crop factor: Pentax 1.5 and Canon 1.6, so 12mm is 18mm for the Pentax and 19.2mm for the Canon.

If you want a Tokina 12-24mm for a Canon, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM might be a better option: 10mm will be 16mm for the Canon.

Advantages of Wide-Angle

It is not wise to convince your friend to buy a WA lens. It all depends on the photographer: does he like WA of tele?

Personally I have the DA*11-18mm and the DA12-24mm but use my DA17-70mm for most shots. I really like WA photography when the weather is OK, that is blue skies with massive white clouds. I also have the DA*50-135mm, which I hardly use. I like WA photography far more than tele photography.

Many amateurs buy a WA zoom because of its overwhelming perspective but many sell their WA zooms after a year because they don't use it. It all depends on preferences of the photographer.

I bought a DA16-85mm early in 2015. I was quite happy with it because the pictures looked sharp from corner to corner. In 2018 I noticed some softness at the righthand side at 85mm. At first I thought of misfocussing. Later I noticed the same thing also at 85mm. So I sent the lens to Rüdiger Maerz in Hamburg to have it adjusted. When I got my lens back it was perfect at 85mm but there was softness on the righthand side between 16 and 28mm. The lens also focussed in a jumpy way. I stopped using it and bought a second DA17-70mm/f4.0. That lens is parfocal. I always focus at 70mm, lock focus and zoom out to take the picture. Personally I like my DA17-70mm better than a DA16-85mm. The latter is varifocal and my copy did not always focus 100% accurately I feel when I compared pictures taken with the DA17-70mm and the DA16-85mm.

Your DA16-85mm seems OK.

I am quite happy with the combination Rawtherapee and Gimp. A few weeks ago the CPU of my desktop failed and the motherboard and CPU had to be replaced. PSE14 was not deactivated, so I got the message that I had to buy PSE14 for a second time. I refuse to buy Adobe software again, simply because Gimp handles the colours in a more natural way. Gimp offers enough possibilities to postprocess pictures. It just takes some time to find out the possibilities.

Kp Grip possibilities

The grip is expensive but worth the money. I bought one 2 years ago for my KP which I use for heavier lenses. I removed the battery from the camera and put it into the grip. It works flawlessly and the combition camera+grip does not become too heavy. The grip also takes D-LI90 batteries.

Pentax KP or K3 mk1?

It is hard to see any difference, at least I cannot make clear what the differences in IQ are.

That is the advantage the K-3 has, especially with heavier lenses. When I use my DA20-40mm I prefer the KP, because the combination is lighter in weight. All in all, it depends on what lenses you use most, and for what subject you want to use the camera.

I have both the KP and the K-3. Which one is the best? Hard to tell. From the ergonomics viewpoint, the K-3 is the best camera. I use a DA17-70mm on both a KP and a K-3. With the KP I use a battery grip to have better ergonomics, whereas with the K-3,it is a good combination.

When you use small lenses, the KP is fine, when you use heavier lenses, the K-3 is better.

Problem: Pentax k3 - no sharpness in the photo

The DA12-24mm is a difficult lens to focus. I have had my copy for some 16 years now. On a K-3 I focus on the furthest point ( in your case the house) at 24 mm, lock focus, zoom out to 12mm and then take the picture. The lens is parfocal and thus you will get the sharpest pictures. Also check for front focus and back focus. My copy is best when finetuned to -2 on a K3.

Thanks for your feedback.

If you try different software products, you should be aware that each product works differently. It takes some time to find out which suits you best. Some combinations work fine in e.g. PSE such as highpass filter/softlight. In Gimp it will destroy your picture. Another combination with the highpassfilter works fine in Gimp. It takes a lot of time to find out what the possibilities are. Invest enough time in it. You will get lots of postprocessing pleasure back for it.

When I bought a Canon Digital Rebel in 2004 I got Photoshop Elements for free. I have used it since that time. I always shoot RAW and the Raw converter works fine when you shoot DNG and get the latest DCP file for your camera.

Some years ago I started using Rawtherapee as a raw converter. RT has many advantages over PSE, but both work fine. A few months ago I started using GIMP. Most things I do with PSE I can also do with GIMP. In some ways PSE is better, but GIMP also offers many useful features. GIMP handles colours slightly better than PSE.

Rawtherapee and GIMP are a fine combination. Just experiment with some programs and find out which suits you best. It also gives you a chance to find out the weaknesses of a program.

KP and lens id in exif not showing

You are right. I had a critical look at my files. I always shoot DNG. There is no lens model mentioned in the DNG files, just focal length. When I use ACR (Photoshop Elements) and 'develop' my DNG file, the lens model is written into the DNG file and the JPG file. The DNG file is changed by PSE, so the lens model shows up.

When I use Rawtherapee, the focal length is shown of the DNG file and on the right hand side the lens model is shown. Each software program interprets the lens model differently. The DA*16-50mm PLM is the same as lens model 2243 in Rawtherapee 5.8, but Darktable (older version) shows another lens model. In Lensfun I gave the name "2243" for the DA*16-50mm PLM and it works fine. Rawtherapee 5.9 recognises the DA*16-50mm PLM. The DNG file is not changed by Rawtherapee and the lens model does not show up.

KP and lens id in exif not showing

I haven't expressed myself too clearly, I am afraid. The standard way of the camera is to write a file on to the SD card using the name of IMPGxxxx. You can change the IMPGxxxx name to e.g. KP1Axxxx or KP1Bxxxx. If you let your camera save the file under a different name, you won't see the lens name in that file. When you use Photoshop Elements, the lens name will be written into the file. With other software the lens name is not restored.

Have you changed the file names?

I use more cameras and in order not to mess things up, I changed the file names. The result is that the lens can no longer be seen in the EXIF, but the lens is recognised in Rawtherapee.

Keep things practical. Personally I took pictures of a house (with dented bricks) and trees at the background at a distance of some 25 metres. I took them at 0, -1, -2, -3, -4 and looked which pictures looked sharpest at 100% (bricks and trees). Then I took pictures at 0, +1, +2, +3, +4 and same procedure as before. My DA20-40mm Ltd on a KP was sharpest at -2. Then I took several test pictures to see whether the pictures were really sharp at -2. They were and so this is a correct setting. My DA12-24mm needed +1 on a K-3 and my DA17-70mm needed -2 on a KP. When you are in doubt which picture is sharpest, just use 0.

But when I use my DA17-70mm on my K-3ii, no fine adjustment is needed.

Just three on my ten lenses needed some fine adjustment.

You are really very lucky indeed.

Four years ago I bought a DA20-40mm Ltd and it was really a sharp lens when I used it on a Pentax K3. Last year I used it on a Pentax KP and it was less sharp, especially at the borders. So I checked for front focus/back focus. At -2 it is really sharp again. But I also checked the other lenses I have. The result: DA12-24mm +1, DA17-70mm -2. The rest is ok.

When you should fine adjust ALL your lenses at extreme values, the camera may be faulty.

DA 20-40 Limited vs DA 16-50 PLM Image Comparison

You are perfectly right. I have both lenses. The DA*16-50mm PLM shows excellent sharpness from edge to edge and focussing is no problem. The DA20-40mm Ltd is a nice lens, but you have to pay attention to what subject you focus on. A well focussed picture will be sharp from edge to edge.

When the weather is fine my favourite lens is the DA17-70mm, which has a nice range. The DA*16-50mm PLM is a heavy lens, especially if you walk with it around your neck for some 3 hours. The DA20-40mm Ltd is light weight and has a very nice colour rendition.

What lens is best? It depends on the situation you are in. I use my DA20-40mm on a KP when I want to travel light. The DA*16-50mm is used when the weather may be a bit changeable: rain-sunshine. The DA17-70mm is not WR or AW and I use it when the weather is OK. It is some 230 grammes lighter than the DA*16-50mm and has a useful range.

I have the DA20-40mm and had the DA21mm. I sold the DA21mm: the centre sharpness is fine, but the border sharpness falls too far behind. The DA20-40mm is a fine lens.

ON1 doesn't read lens name of HD DA* 16-50mm F2.8 PLM

It is quite simple. ON1 uses Lensfun for lens correction. Lensfun has not calibrated this lens yet, see:

https://wilson.bronger.org/lensfun_coverage.html

Rawtherapee also uses Lensfun. Last year I bought the HD Pentax-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW and made my own profile. Rawtherapee 5.8 does not know the Pentax name, but only the lens number: 2243. This works fine.
