Battery For The Pentax Remote F
Posted By nanhi

Some folks mentioned the Battery in the Pentax Remote Control F cannot be changed and the Remote has to be chucked out after it dies.
Note that the battery CAN BE CHANGED. There is nothing you can damage in the dismantling process as there are very few parts and it is so simply built. Here is how you can change the battery:-
Get a jewelers / watch makers screw driver set - $ 4 to 8. Use the round Philips type screw driver - the medium sized one from the set.
You will notice 3 black screws on the back of the body. Gently unscrew them and lift the back cover out. You can see the thin round Button Cell held in a wire cage attached to the circuit board. Note the battery layout carefully (positive and negative cell face) as you will have to put back the new battery in the same way. Infact you can lift out the circuit board with the attached battery and the infra red emitter safely from the front cover shell. Be careful not to drop the rubber button sitting in the front cover. If by chance you do dislodge it dont worry. Just pick it up and put it back in its slot.
Now pull or push the Button Cell out from the simple wire cage and insert a fresh Battery. The Cell is a CR 1620 3volt type by Panasonic. But you should be able to buy any available make. Push it into the wire button cell holder and assemble in the reverse order as you opened it. Just make sure the back cover fits snugly in place before you screw it down.
Note the button cell is 16 mm dia x 1.5 mm thick. In case you do not find this particular model, buy any 1.5 to 2 mm thick 3v button cell in 16 mm or smaller dia.
Place the circuit board back on the front half of the Plastic shell. Lift the wire button cell holder a bit and insert your new battery. If using a smaller cell make sure the positive and negative face contacts are ok.
It is very very easy. Now use your remote for years and years - after all it costs quite a bit.

UV filters degrade image quality

A perfectly legitimate video showing a Ricoh-Pentax Rep doing a one or two time demo on an SP coated Pentax lens. But try it over the 10 to 12 year life time period of this lens - say 2 or 3 cleanings in a year - and your coating has vanished. Kaput.
Don't overdo things. Simple logic.
And this business of "to filter or not to filter" has long past semantics. I have lost two lenses because I did not have filters on them - sea gull poo hitting a lens, and a Rolleflex TLR F Planar f2.8 lens over a period of 27 years.
Hey I am not a Pro, just a smart amateur to know when to remove that filter and take that critical shot. And I am not rich to keep replacing lenses, rather replace a good filter like the Hoya Pro 1D which I prefer.

K5IIs Perfect Camera for Me, Except the Low Light Focus Thing, Alternative?

The K-5 IIs is a Classic Pentax like the film K-1000 SE. I never have had this AF hunting problem except once in the Columbia Ice Field with a SWA Lens in very cold Foggy Misty conditions.
I never felt the need for the K-3 or the K-1. I have brutally sharp zoom lenses quite a few with f2.8 Apertures.

A short story about the K5 weather sealing

I am very surprised at the statement "weather sealing does almost nothing with condensation".
I have a different experience with the K-5 (also K-5 IIs) and the 18-135 WR lens. I live in California as well as Toronto. where weather changes can go from to extreme ends. In the San Francisco example from an outside temp of 8 centigrade to 28 centigrade indoors. I have never had any condensation.
But did suffer condensation when using a non WR Lens like the Sigma 10-20 on the K-5.

Then last August we we were in the Canadian Rockies. We encountered terrible weather - rain, sleet, snow, fog & extreme cold. Cloudy and dull always with worst conditions on the Columbia Icefields and the awesome Glaciers. The Sigma 10-20 would refuse to move upto Infinity Focus on the K-5 IIs, and I had to focus manually - no focus clutch on this lens. I would check back lens fogging frequently on the Sigma but found none. I am still perplexed at this behavior - AF not moving the lens closer to Infinity for distance landscape shots.
But the 18-135 WR lens worked flawlessly.
When we returned to the sweltering heat of Toronto, the Sigma 10-20 began behaving properly.

Regards.

Condensation is tiny droplets of water entering the camera to fog up the lens and settling on the motherboard. And I think the WR lens & camera seals lived up to its specs.

Updating firmware,power failure question ?

My Dear Pentaxian Friends, all of us are going on one track only - Battery + Battery + Battery Failure..... as the ONLY cause for "Bricking" a camera.

After all it is electronics, with a motherboard and a computer Operating System inside + eproms where the Firmware is stored - at least it was on my Dual Firmware Chip PC on a Gigabyte make Motherboard circa 2005.

So a camera can also be bricked by a corrupted Firmware Download or maybe even a failed SD Card or a "Short" on the camera Motherboard or the Battery Circuit - or God knows by what other means in "stupid" electonic gadgets. Some times they just "Hang" and cannot even be re-stated except perhaps by removing the poor Battery.

Please, please smart Pentaxians, stop blaming the poor battery only.

Just that Camera Manufacturers are very secretive and will never tell you the facts or allow you to re-load the OS ourselves - WHY? Big money and a new sales are involved.

If I could re-load the OS on my "Bricked" LG Mobile Phone with Twin Cameras why not a DSLR???

Regards.

ZEIKOS ZE-AF585P flash

Dear Sir, these very general flashes are made by a single Chinese company but re-branded into five or six sellers like Digital Concepts, Bower, Quantaray, Promaster, Sakar etc.
Please read their Guide #s after downgrading them by 30 to 40 %. And Zeikos is the most 3rd class amongst them. All the Ziekos add-on stuff are useless cheapos. Go with ProMaster as the lesser evil. If you are buying a Module based unit, do ensure you buy the ProMaster 5050DXR Module for full PTTL operation on a Pentax DSLR.
And the Price appears to be high for this Zeikos cheapo.

Cleaning Lens Rubber
Posted By nanhi

A lens has lots of rubber - on the zoom, focus and other rings. In time they get very dirty with oil from finger foods, dust, dirt, grime, moisture etc. If not cleaned off immediately the rubber will deteriorate at a much faster rate.
Plus you will be surprised how much bacteria the rubber has attracted. The bacteria plus oil & grime have a great time hiding beneath the ridges which all lens rubber have. Cleaning with cloth or camel hair brush will not help as they don't do a deep clean between those ridges.
So don't throw away your old tooth brush. Give it a good clean with liquid detergent and water + some bleach to disinfect it. Now wet the brush. Soak up the excess wetness with a clean cloth.
If the lens rubber is very badly soiled, ad just a wee bit of liquid detergent to the water - just a wee bit please. Cover the lens with front & rear caps. Scrub the lens rubber in both X & Y axis directions with the tooth brush. Clean the brush with the detergent water, remove the excess wetness and scrub the lens rubber again.
Finish off with the brush dipped in clean water - at least two passes.
And finally dry the rubber with a clean cloth.
Photographs turn out much better & more colorful with clean gear - some kind of magic for sure.
Try it, it will cost you just 12 minutes of your time. And I do it sitting on my bed or the dining table - safety against nimble fingers, in case the lens gets dropped!!??
Regards happy Pentaxians.

Shopping for marriage gifts we reached the stage typified by the Ad "shop till you drop".

We noticed this Tea Vendor - our saviour. Seeing the hygienic throw away earthenware pots and being aware that boiling hot tea will not give us a "running tummy", we stopped by for a refreshing cuppa.

That was the best tea we had, and guess the cost 8 US Cents (INR 5). So we had two cuppas each. Even a 5-star hotel or restaurant wouldn't beat this tea.

It was then that I decided to take out the old Canon S90 for a picture of the Tea Vendor.
Note: Left my pro gear home as there would be Pro Photographers and Videographers at the wedding.

Comments welcome.

Promaster 5750DX flash compatible the K-S2?

You are in Luck Brother. The Promaster 5050DXR Module will just work fine as a PTTL Flash if you can attach it to the old Promaster 5750DX flash, on every Pentax DSLR made till date.
The hot shoe configuration remains the same.
Note: 1) you may have to cut the plastic key off the Promaster 5050DXR module before mounting it to the older Promaster 5750DX flash. So do check this out.
2) Do NOT buy the QDA-PAF module. It is TTL only and will not work on current DSLRs from the K-20D to the K-3 series, or the newer K-S series.
3) The Quantaray QTB-9550U flash is a re-badged Promaster 5750DX. Both are exactly the same.

Here is a Bonus. The plain Quantaray / Promaster Module QDA-P is a marvel and the cheapest at $ 5 to 10 on evil bay. Your old flash will work like an Auto Thyristor, giving you perfectly exposed shot each time. It is even better than the Promaster 5050DXR Module.
It has settings galore on the back of the module - manual, Auto, and Low Power. Auto gives you further 3-color coded setting enhancing your flashes capability.
The module, when set to Auto, communicates with the camera and can read the ISO setting from the camera. It then has the ability to set the aperture as you change the ISO. The sensor on the flash regulates the power output depending on the distance and the amount of light falling on the subject.

Note: Al these earlier Flash Guns and Modules are complementary and work well with each other - Quantaray, Promaster, Vivitar, Tumax, Digital Concepts, Sakar, Bower etc.

Regards.

Overcoming Red colors in Pentax DSLRs

Pentaxes are known to be bamboozled by reds especially if overexposed. So underexpose if shooting bright red colors. Now lighten the photo in post to bring out the true colors of red.

Oh my my Oldbayrunner Sir! You appear to have lost your shirt for a piece of editorial picked up from the PhotographyTalk Magazine and posted by me here.
#1 There is nothing for me to pay my daughter. She is much much richer than me. And my children forbid me to pay now that I am retired. My God, she is a Ph.D, a double MS and India's topper in the CBSE. Woks for the largest Swiss + American Medical Firm.
#2 I am not the miserly type. I am the most blessed and the happiest Father and a Grand Father ever. I have done extremely well in life. Even then I come from the scion of the family of India with schooling in Dublin and a GCE from the University of Cambridge. A Graduate Degree in Mech. With God's Grace I retired as an Advisor with a very rich experience working with multi-national multi- religious group from the US, UK, Scotland, South Africa, the Phillipines, Pakistan, Egypt etc. I have had a fulfilling & happy life Sir.

I may even awe you as an apostle with the motto "Help Ever, Harm Never". I live in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, San Mateo the Bay Area, California and of course my native Bangalore, the Software Capital of the World. Perhaps we could meet, if not for this post, but to discuss photography and exchange gears for fun.

So Deb, here are some photos from Cuba.
Do note I have not shown the poverty, or the open drains and some of the decrepit life style or the run down homes.
Instead I choose to show Cuba's beautiful Spanish & European past as I saw it.
And the folks are great mechanics too, having maintained their vintage cars to perfection post the US embargo.
We were welcomed to Cuba as Canadians, and felt safe every where we went. What a merry band of people even in their poverty!
Photo 4949 has a special significance. I asked our part time Guide - actually a Professor earning just $ 26 a month - where are the Natives (the ethnic people).
He said the Spaniards killed them, and what few remained died of disease & poverty.
So he took us to a mighty Church in Havana and showed us this statue. That little boy is the real Cuban native.
Here is the link to beautiful Cuba: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/86j37pf1btu3f3t/AAC2bJaOJRHDnHEc0GyFGFaAa?dl=0

Deb, beautiful documentation of street life, a game of carrom and adda bazi. The Pentax F 28/2.8 lens is a winner - a true street lens on an APS-C camera.
Though Westerners like the dilapidated look of our gallis and slums as they look unique to them, I think you could have softened the background. Look how Mr. Slowpez's eyes were drawn straight to the background rather than the prime photo theme - folks enjoying a game around a carrom board - a game popular in Indian streets.
I would have used f 2.8 or 3.5 and lowered the ISO from 800, for a much greater noise control.
You are perfectly spot on about Havana and Cuba's run down decrepit look. But it has some old European Spanish beauty there too. We were in Cuba last December.
It is unfortunate that India's poverty, the decay and slums sell more in the West than our cultural richness, the warmth of our people as an ancient race, rather than the richness of India today as a world power far larger and powerful than many European or American nation.

Recommended settings for K-5 IIS
Posted By nanhi

Hello 1812, I am surprised that no one gave a definite answer to a simple question you asked and when you gave most of your shooting preferences. I know how daunting it can be for a first time DSLR user especially if he has a high tech camera with some very fine lenses.
Congratulations for owning the best camera and lenses in the world. I would recommend add a 10-20 SWA zoom like one of the Sigmas, if shooting in the confines of your home or for family travel especially in the narrow streets of Europe.
I began with a K-20D and moved up to the K-5 IIS when the price fell to $ 377 (minus cost of the Grip + SDXC Card). My preferred lenses are the Pentax DA 18-135 WR, Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and the Sigma 10-20 F4-5.6. The 18-135 is a good Macro too, which very few people know - here is a photo for you.
Now there are (6) major Chapters to settings on you K-5 IIs. I have them all on a Word 2013 File after I captured the entire Chapter wise Menu System from Imaging Resource com. I then overlaid my own settings of choice from my own resources + the various Photo Forums, Blogs and Individual Photographers comments on the Internet. The Chapters are:-
1) The general button and lever settings on the Body & Lens. Example Metering mode, AF Point - single or ....
Settings operated by the MENU Button:-
2) Record Menu - total of 5 sub chapters.
3) Play Back Menu - one chapter only.
4) Set Up Menu - total 4 chapters.
5) Custom Menu - 4 chapters.
Settings operated by the OK Button and 4-way Controller
6) Fn or Function Menu. Example Bright, Landscape etc + their (5) itirations like Sharpness, Contrast etc.
Note: The other (3) Controllers operate the WB, Flash + the Drive Mode.

Now this data is a huge one. So I suggest you PM me with your email address and I will have the Settings sent to you gratis. I would like you to repose trust in me as I am a retired Advisor, world's largest conglomerate, and visiting my children in California. I am no Pro but a pretty OK photographer.
Regards.
nanhi
camp: San Mateo, CA.

Post Script: I use mostly TAv mode as it gives me the greatest flexibility with the shutter and aperture edials + the EV adjust button. I shoot hi res JPEGs and RAW when in doubt.

PEF vs DNG

SpecialK Sir, I very humbly said that even after reading up and doing some research on the internet I was still hungry for knowledge.
And I do appreciate that you atleast took the time to reply.
I could not find answers to these simple questions which was also given in the opening thread:-

a) The chicken vs egg enigma. Which came first?? PEF or DNG or a Native RAW Digital Format?? So to say "0 & 1s" captured by the Sensor.
So what is the actual RAW Digital Format in which pictures are captured??? Or what is the Native RAW Digital Format???
d) Does the Pentax DSLR like the K-5 capture pictures into i) PEF format and then convert it into DNG? or
ii) does it capture in the DNG format and then convert into PEF?

Obviously if a native digital format is being used, then some kind of software is required to convert them into PEF or DNG.

Hope this answers your question "If you read all about, I don't know why you are asking".
Or maybe I am one of those "Dummies", albeit a highly educated academician and a retired Advisor in one of the world's largest conglomerate.

My sincere thanks to all the wonderful Pentaxians who sent in their views. I truly learnt something today.

With my humble Regards.

Hello mkyyy, be warned of the use of filters on this lens:-
a) vignetting unless you use a slim frame filter
b) massive lens flare. remember there is a huge surface - 77 mm diameter of glass on that filter. Also this lens pulls in a lot of sky whose bluish hues can change
from the center to the sides.
c) multiple green colored reflections under some photo situations.
d) loss of contrast, color and sharpness.

Holy trinity of lenses
Posted By nanhi

Thanks Johnc & Aleonx3, this is what a constructive discussion is all about in a democratic / open society. I did mention that I use Primes too under some photo situations. I am a global Indian and travel frequently all over the world and have this to report:-
a) All the Zooms I mentioned (10-20, 17-50, 55-300) are around 400 to 450 grams and 3 to 4-inches in length. You decide if they are big or heavy to use. Are they??
b) A 10-20 zoom lens is preferred in Europe or Cuba. The streets are narrow, monuments and cathedral huge, and you don't want to be run down by crazy
motorists when using a prime, which requires you to cross alleys and streets to "zoom" with your feet. Rome & Havana is terrible.
c) You bet you could be mighty glad you carried that Pentax HD 55-300 WR zoom for that 12% photo situation when abroad.
d) By jove, my made in Japan Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is brutally sharp. It can give primes a run for the money. What I mean to say is that todays zooms are damn good.
e) Request please do not think that Zoom users are dumb amateurs and that Prime users are hep Pros - avant garde folks. I get this impression from many
photographers, just like some Canikon chaps who chuckle and say uh! Pentax. I just smile and mumble that I do use some of the costliest primes when needed -
especially in very low light situations requiring f1.2 to 1.8.
f) And of course you have to have a true Macro Lens which are Primes. My Tamron 90mm is.
g) I am able to fit a DSLR, a compact camera and the 3-Zooms + other accessories in my Sling Bag. And not too heavy to lug around for my 12-Hr day. I normally
decide before hand - depending on the place - and take 2-zooms only - like the recent Grand Canyon / Hoover Dam shoot - the Sigma 10-20 + the 55-300.
h) A trinity of Zooms lets you cover all your bases and photo situations, which from my 56 Years of experience with a camera, says you can never with 3-primes.
I) With improved ISO performance and low light AF one can get by with zooms. But note my dimunitive $ 400 Tamron 17-50 f2.8 is not a slow lens.
j) I don't have a weather sealed Prime. Lucky I was carrying the 18-135 WR zoom in London when a down pour came suddenly. On a trip almost under the Niagara
Falls in the "Maid of the Mist" I went on shooting in the mighty spray and wind when all other photographers packed up. I also had the last laugh at some Canikon
chaps who had scoffed at my Pentax K-20D with an 18-55 WR lens.
And if you can, try the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 - it will challenge your Prime and make you rethink.
Enjoy your Trinity of Primes and Zooms folks as the best gear is what you have at the moment.
Regards.

Lens for indoors without flash

My home in Bangalore is a modest 2-bedroom one with a pretty long living room but just 13 ft at its broadest. Since the window faces the broader 13 ft side and the sofas are kept facing the window against the wall, most family photos are taken on or around the sofa.
With an APS-C Camera the best lenses to use are the 18 to 28 mm wide angles like the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. The ceiling height is 10 ft and painted bright white. On bright sunny days I do not need flash as the windows are very large. On dull days I use an external flash bounced from the ceiling. Never ever had exposure problems or go below ISO 400 with the K-5 or K-5 IIs.
I have the FA 28 f2.8 AL lens but I prefer the zooms for tighter framing. On just one occasion - a large prayer group - I used the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 with excellent results - both stills and video. Have attached a family photo taken recently. The only person missing is my son-in-law.

My Dear Pentaxian Friends, I used few words - after an intense comparitive read up of Pentax DSLRs on the Internet - that this B&H deal is a steal - $ 546.95 for a K-5 IIs Body + Grip + 64 BG Ultra Card.

Why bother about selling the Grip, use it. And when you are fed up with the K-5 IIs, sell it with the Grip.
.
Technology will keep improving with leaps and bounds - just that I do not believe in buying stuff at astronomical launch prices - like K-5 IIs at $1200. Also I am no Pro so will not buy exotic lenses at exotic prices. Rather keep changing to better & better camera Bodies that brings out the best in my so so lenses.

Here is a shot with my cheap Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and the K-5 IIs. It gives the Pentax 16-50 f2.8 a run for the money. Photo highly cropped in size. And my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is still better. I have been seeing results from this lens with the K-x, K20D, K-5 and now the K-5 IIs - it leap frogs in performance because of the better camera technology.

Happy Thanksgiving friends. We have Thanksgiving some 3-times in a year - at Diwali, Holi, and on a special day called "Chama Yachna" or asking for forgiveness. Actually more than 3-times when we join the merry making with our Moslem, Jewish and Christian friends.

Working very well with the K-3 + 18-135 WR photos.

I have fond memories of my cameras from the Ukraine namely the Kiev-19 and the Lubitel.
They costed a song way back in the early 80s.
I could use my Nikon lenses on the Kiev-19. Such a beautiful camera.

May Ukraine be at peace. May peace prevail upon Mother Earth - Om Shanti, Shanti, Shantihi.

Pentax Gear to go on sale in India soon

Vow, great tidings indeed for a country where old timers and studio folks still venerate Pentax Film cameras. And I say this from smaller towns like Patna in Bihar, where film photography was a passion.
I buy all my Pentax gear abroad and have never worried about Service. Even when I owned an MZ-5n I got it repaired by an independent stores in the Fort area Mumbai. The good thing about India is that nothing is thrown away, as we have very good local mechanics and repair men, who can put back sick equipment with cannibalized or improvised parts.
I have repeatedly informed my friends in the US to send their Lens problems - recoating, separation, fungus cleaning etc - to India for repairs at 1/2 to 1/4 of the US cost including shipping.
Ricoh must be prepared to make a dent into the well trenched Canikon market here in India. And I wish them good luck as an earlier Pentax + Ricoh Film camera user.
But firstly Ricoh will have to change the mindset of Professional Photographers in India, by giving them their best loaner cameras and lenses. Reason Why? These guys have been spreading the word to erstwhile Pentaxian families that DSLRs are only Canikons and nothing else.
Wish you well Ricoh. Also wish you had retained the word Pentax in some form on your letter head & web site.

Welcome Buzz. You just bought yourself one of the best camera in the world. Congratulations. The K-5 is as good as the K-5 II & IIs. In fact the internet favors the K-5 over the newer K-3 in some respects.
A better lens would have been the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or the 28-75 f2.8 (Full Frame) + the Pentax DA 55-300.
I have personally kept away from the legacy manual lenses - K, M or A as I do not see much advantage compared to the modern computer designed AF lenses with superior coatings, except perhaps for the price.
Pentax has opened shop in India, but their prices are astronomic.
I bought a K-5 with the 18-135 WR from Henrys of Toronto last year for $ 1108. My favourite lenses are the Sigma 10-20, the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 + the 18-135.
Glad you got a brand new K-5. Do let me know its Serial #. Hope it is the Ricoh model and not the Hoya one. Hope you bought some spare batteries too.
Here is a chap shipping to India. No Customs Duty.
Regards.
