Light meter issues with Pentax ME

I have an old ME as well and I'm having a similar problem. I really like the size of the ME. I wish there was a way to use an external light meter with the ME but I don't believe it will do you any good. But I'm no expert by any means so if someone knows better I'd also like to hear it. Man I like the feel of that little ME. Anyway, have a good day.

Tokina 28mm 2.8

I have an old Tokina 28mm f2.8 lens that I bought back in the 80's. Didn't have much money so I probably went for cheap. This is not an RMC as some are. I'm not sure what the RMC stands for but if I had to guess I'd say it has to do with the coating. My primary question is this. On the aperture ring next to f22 there is an A (colored green) and I was wondering what that A represents. There is a small button on the aperture ring that, when depressed, will allow you to rotate the ring to the A position and it will remain locked on the A once you've rotated it to line up with the dot. I don't believe I've shot this lens in more years than I can remember but I'm going to give it a test run on some black and white film soon. I hope its not too big a wast of a few frames of film.

Thanks in advance to anyone who might choose to make worthwhile comments on this subject.

Regards

(Long live film)

I've never used Extended Bracketing before and was just looking into it on my K10d. Is the purpose EB for use in HDR? Images shot this way are run thru an HDR program, right? Thanks

Maybe of no value but have you tried a different memory card? Doesn't hurt to try.

New Firmware from Pentax for KM, K2000, K20D, K200D, K10D

I've successfully downloaded the latest firmware hoping that it would solve my memory card issue. The only card that seems to work in my K10D is a Ultra II. Both the basic SD and Ultra SD don't. They record fine and I can view them on my camera but when trying to transfer the photos to my computer its as if there is no card in the card reader. However, when I put the Ultra II in the same card reader it works perfect. Has anyone else had this problem? The reason I tried the latest card which is the Ultra is because I couldn't find an Ultra II. I hope they still make that version of card or I'm totally screwed.

Oh, and its not the reader or the computer because I've tried different ones of both and got the same results.

I was hoping updating the firmware might have done something to help me out with that.

Firmware upgrade

If I haven't done any firmware upgrades to my K10D and I only update with the latest firmware issue, won't I be missing out on any of the fixes that came with any previous issues? If this is so, where can I find those other versions? I only noticed the latest (if 1.30 is the latest) and didn't see downloads for all the previous versions.

Can anyone help me with this?

Best Regards

So cutting thru all of the technical stuff, how will an Auto-Tak work on a K10D? Other than it being a manual lens, I won't have to do anything with the contacts will I?

I like the simplicity of it. Isn't that one of the things that often taught in composing a photo - minimizing? I like it because of that - only 3 elements: jet, clouds and background sky.

I like it the way it is because it adds a sense of isolation of the ship in this desolate water. There are no doubt many other compositions that could come out of this but I think what has been presented here has a rightful place. But then these are opinions, right? Good job Ahab. Besides, I wonder how much softening would occur if you started cropping on this image? Just wondering.

First, let me say how grateful I am that everyone has been extremely polite and considerate of what I'm asking. I've read many forum threads where only about every 5th comment is of any value and the rest are just taking shots at what everyone else is saying. Thanks

Very good suggestions indeed. I had read earlier about the Katzeye split image viewfinder and will look into that. Is that something I can change out myself or do you need to send it in? Looking back at my original post where I said I was reluctant to make such an investment as is required for some of the newer lens, what I meant was that I was reluctant w/o being able to test one first. You can rent Nikon and Canon lens but as far as I know, you can't rent Pentax lens. That would be great if you could so you could try before you make the full investment. Can't have everything.

In the first post 'Impartial' mentioned updating the sensor. Did this imply that you can update only the sensor or does it in fact mean just replacing the K10d with a newer model camera?

I know this lens has been kicked around the block many times but this is sort of a request for advice if you guys will please bear with me.

Like most everyone states; for the price its not bad. However, if you need it for low light situations, you'd better have other glass to shoot thru. At least that is how mine performs. I know not all lens are equal and don't roll off the assembly line performing exactly the same.

I bought this lens on my K10d (which is the camera I still shoot) and all the other lens' I own are older manual lens (manual in every way and with my eyes I probably need to stay away from manual focus). Like I mentioned above, when trying to shoot indoors in low light (I guess any low light situation) its just not satisfactory. I've been contemplating purchasing a new higher end lens such as the Pentax DA 12-24mm f/4 ED AL (IF) which was recommended to me by one of the featured Pentaxians on the Pentaxian website. I've also heard that this lens has shown to be rated better than the primes in that same range.

However, I'm just a little reluctant to invest that kind of money. I'm almost considering switching camps to Niks or the Cans. I know, shame on me, right? I'm under heavy pressure form my son who shoots weddings and he's in the Canon camp after trying Nikon for a while.

I suppose everyone has a loyalty to one brand or the other for whatever reason. I've been with Pentax for years (film cameras). This K10d is my first digital. Some might say that I'm playing with an outdated model but some people still give high regard to even earlier models.

So that is the cross road I'm at. Do I invest in a newer lens and hope that it produces better results or do I look into another brand ( I like to call the others - aftermarket brand, the same way I consider motorcycles that are not Harley Davidsons :) ) Can I expect much better quality from, for example the 12-24? I'm not talking composition, as I know a lens can't do your thinking for you. I'm talking image quality. Or maybe the sensor is my problem and not the lens.

With the risk of much adversity, I post this hoping that I can get some helpful feed back from you guys. However, I do know that some will likely choose to bash me for even considering the change. But God did give us freedom of choice, good or bad, right?

Thanks in advance for any advice you kind folks might offer.

Best Regards

I don't feel good at all when the words "cheap" are coupled with any lens. Mainly because you get what you pay for. Lets just hope they come out with more high quality lens. Though it would be nice if things didn't cost so much, but we've just come to accept that I think.

Its almost comical how folks can get so hostile so quickly about something that was just offered as a challenge. What it should basically boil down to is, you're in or you're out. Nothing more need be said other than, 'what are the rules?'. Look at it this way. All submittals could turn out horrible and those who declined to participate could say, 'I'm sure glad I didn't get in on that one'.

Kindest regards to you all.

B&W Filters - conventional vs digital

Anyone out there with a knowledgeable opinion about the end result differences between the use of Conventional (on camera) Black and White filters vs Black and White filters applied by means of PP software. Does one give better results than the other (I know the answer to this could ultimately come to "The Eye of the Beholder")?

Of course that is if you could shoot digitally in B&W with the camera that you are using. Mine can't but I'm still interested in whether one is better than the other.

Thanks in advance for all who care to share their opinion.

What is the biggest complaint with the 18-55? There are certainly some nice shots included in the pervious posts but there is bound to be some legitimate complaints. This lens is certainly priced like a kit lens so maybe you're only getting what you've paid for. Is it the sharpness? Maybe a color cast? Vignetting or just what is it. I'm interested in what others say about this lens so I can compare shots from the one I have. Does the sweet spot with this lens vary with any individual lens or does it seem to be consistant among 18-55's?

Best Regards

Color Saturation

Is color saturation determined by Aperture or Shutter Speed? Is this typical for both film and digital or is this inherent to film only because of the chemistry of film?

Thanks in advance for your input.

K10D contrast/saturation settings matrix

Oh yeah, Image Tone. Got it. I was going to post a question to ask how or to what advantage this was used. I hadn't recognized it as Natural or Bright. So, as in the Bright setting, does this more or less override the need for Contrast or Sharpness adjustments with the slide bars or does this add even more Contrast and Sharpness to whatever you've already adjusted - if you had adjusted?

Thanks for the help hertel. I read in one of the post that someone had also retained their older version. I guess for back up in case the newer one would have caused problems. How could you save the old version? Any idea? Or would it be just as good to download that older version later on if you felt you needed to go back for some reason?

K10d firmware

Is there a way to see what version of firmware is currently loaded on my camera?

And I was thinking of downloading the latest firmware but have not updated from whatever came installed on my camera from the time I purchased it. Can I safely go from an early version to the latest or would I need to update each version in sequence until I finally get to the latest, which I think is 1.10.1 (correct me if I'm wrong please)?
