MX vs K2 (DMD) vs ME Super vs LX

Hi,

For Miserere who put the duct tape where the mirror bumper foam was, how did that end up working for you? I might be getting an LX soon and would want to work any sticky mirror issues out via homebrew methods...
Best, Andre

What's going on? K5, Av and auto-iso

Hi all,

Just got a K5. Quick question, in aperture-priority, the auto-iso is not engaged, though I have engaged it in the menus. Is this correct? Auto-iso only seems to be working for me in TAv. As I generally only shoot in Av, this is a nuisance.

How would I correct it so that auto-iso is engaged in Av? Auto-Iso worked, kinda, in my K100D Super, and certainly in my Kx.

Thanks,
André

customizable button for white balance?

I guess what I'm getting at with the S95 is that, with one push of a button, an instant white balance setting is made. This is not so for my K-x-- I must also push a left-hand arrow button and scroll through the various options.

Are you saying that the RAW button on the K-5 can be customized to adjust white balance right on the spot?

customizable button for white balance?

One of the greatest things about the new Canon S95 that I bought was the 'Smart' button that can be customized for around 12 different operations; I have set it so that I just point to something white, push it, and voila, custom white balance. No menu, no more than 1 button push... even more important to me than aperture, given that it's a digicam and I almost always shoot at the largest aperture anyway. Coolest thing on a very cool camera.

My K-x doesn't have a 'smart' button, or a 1-touch manual wb. Does the K-5 have either a 'smart' manual wb button, or can one of its buttons be customized for such? I can't find any indication of that in any of the web posts I've sifted through... after the S95, it frustrates me as to how long it is taking to accomplish a very essential often-used operation.
Thanks

Pentax 17-70/4 or Tamron 17-50/2.8?

Nice price! I decided on the Pentax 17-70/4 a few months after it came out and haven't regretted my decision. It's small as a zoom lens in that range goes, and I don't mind the little distortion that I see on the wide end. It's amazing what I can now do with the 17-70/4 on the Kx. And I thought my K100DS was good!

Did I just downgrade to K100D Super, or actually upgrade?

Last week, I did exactly what the OP did-- sold my K10D in order to get a smaller body, a K100DS, and to save some money. Lo and behold, I find that I've gotten a better camera for what I like to do, which is low-light photography. Much better. The lack of noise at 1600ISO is astonishing. I miss the two control dials with my K10 somewhat, as well as operating speed and better auto ISO control... well, much better, really... but the high ISO images have definitely moved a couple of steps forward. Best downgrade I ever did, too. I'll be holding on to this one for a long time.

Can the SDM 2.8f 16-50 replace the prime 1.4f?

It mostly depends on whether you shoot indoors with or without flash. With flash, like with most digicams: 16-50 should be fine.

Without flash: the 50/1.4 is better.

Look at your shots and tell yourself what works for you best. The best solution is to save up an extra $200 and buy the 16-50, and keep the 50/1.4.

I have the DA17-70 and FA43. I do mostly street shots and close landscape shots. I don't really need anything else.

I'd consider the 55-200 if I was to add a third lens and I didn't zoom long a lot. I did have the 55-200, which I gave to my dad, and it went along great with the K10.

If I did use long zoom a lot, in low-light, I'd try to get a 50-135/2.8.

I don't think it'll happen... the 17-70 is a pretty recent offering. Imagine how much of a bust all those non-WR units (like mine!) will be if Pentax skips over to the WR version of it soon.

No problems at all with the "DA17-70" (which, by the way, is what I put into the search box here... and it works) which I bought 2nd-hand from Henry's in Toronto. I'm not used to such a big lens, coming from having traded in a DA21 because of more versatility... but otherwise, it's handled very well and image quality is great. Infinity and all.

Has anyone tried to weather-seal their lenses?

I speak as a K10D owner... who lost his first K10D after 3 hours shooting in driving rain off the coast of Vancouver Island! I don't want to be afraid to take my camera in the rain again, but also want to be a lot more prudent with the 2nd one. I don't have any weather-sealed lenses.

Has anyone tried to weather-seal their lens, particularly with a rubber gasket similar to, from what I hear, the DA* lenses have?

I have emailed Pentax Canada to see if they would put the gasket on my lenses; I don't think they will. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if there is more to the weather-resistant quality than just gasket and an upgraded lens coating.

Finally, what do you think of putting a thick rubber band around the outside just where the lens and body join? Not like a gasket, no, but maybe more water-resistant?

Best,
Andre

Is there a DA* 30mm/1.0 in the works?
Posted By drec
Replies: 156

Absolutely, 30/1.4 is realistic; f/1.0 certainly not. The lens would be costing over $2000 in all probability and would be ginormous.

Also, how many sales would Pentax have with this lens!? Compared to, say, a 1.4 that would probably cost 1/4 to 1/3 of the f/1.0?

Finally, sensors are getting so good that f/1.0 is become more and more unnecessary. Bumping 800 up to 1600 on your K20D is much cheaper than replacing your 1.4 with a 1.0!
