Making the switch: DSLR (K1) to mirrorless (Fujifilm X-T5)

You can always rely on this forum for some thoughtful discussion. :)

I shot almost exclusively MF lenses on my K1 and my hit rate was pretty good. But I did find myself lusting after a modern AF system and some of the other bells and whistles.

I'd also echo the comments on the beautiful JPEGs and film simulations in the Fuji. I had a little X70 several years ago and got some great images from it (Classic Chrome is just ). So that's nice.

And like I said, I do really like the ergonomics. I'm also an old guy and I definitely prefer dedicated dials vs a PASM dial plus front/back wheels. I've often said that my dream DSLR would essentially be a K1000 with a FF sensor and other modern internals. (And yes, I still love my K1000. I've sold two LXs over the years but never gave up my $35 craigslist K1000.)

I'll let y'all know how it shoots this weekend!

Making the switch: DSLR (K1) to mirrorless (Fujifilm X-T5)

I decided to get rid of my beloved K1 and make the switch to a Fujifilm X-T5. (I know, traitor!) I’m not getting rid of my film cameras or anything but for digital, I was interested in shifting over to Fuji. The colors, the features (esp the nearly-as-good-as-Canon AF), and the analog style controls in particular made the new X-T5 super attractive.

I just got the camera a few days ago (with the Fuji 16-80mm f4) but thought I’d share some early impressions. I’ll be taking it on a trip this weekend so should have more to share later.

In no particular order:
  • The body feels nice and I love the ergonomics (more on that in a sec) but I was surprised how much less “beefy” the body and access panels feel compared to the K1. For example, the doors for accessing the battery compartment, USB-C, etc., aren't nearly as tough and secure. The X-T5 is weather sealed, but just based on the feel, I have more confidence in the Pentax.

  • I’m a huge fan of the locking analog controls on the top. Granted, I’m also a film shooter so this is a more familiar arrangement. But for such a small body the layout and clarity of the controls is fantastic.

  • Button customizability is easy and really great. Makes me think of my Ricoh GRIII (which is saying a lot. Love that thing.)

  • I am pretty bummed they explicitly excluded support for a battery grip. Like, why?

  • I’ve been pretty leery of EVFs and am not totally used to looking at a screen through the viewfinder yet, but I can’t deny that the benefits here are enormous. Case in point: the focus checking features. Being able to focus, say, an old MF lens and with the push of a button, automatically zoom into the focus point to check critical focus? Damn!

  • Again, I haven’t really put it through its paces but so far the AF seems awesome. Speed, accuracy, continuous tracking (including eyes), there’s just no comparison. Now I haven’t used the clairvoyant Sony eye tracking or a Canon R3 (or R5), but this is just miles ahead of my previous AF experience.

  • Along with the zoom, I got an inexpensive PK > Fuji X lens adaptor. Haven’t had a chance to really try out any of my Pentax (or Voigtlander) primes yet, but looking forward to using my fav 58mm Nokton on the X-T5.

Anyway, just thought I’d pass along some initial thoughts. If I come across anything else worth noting for the Fuji-curious Pentax user I’ll add it.

Thanks for the kind words! But no, I work in software.

I get paid sometimes for shoots but it's primarily an artistic outlet (read: glorified hobby). If I tried to make it my day job I'd surely starve! :)

I like Eric Kim's photography and his shooting philosophy. I definitely don't agree with him on everything but I get where he's coming from. He's legit. (The fact that he's trying to make his passion pay is laudable too, imo. That's a goofy criticism against someone, I think, especially if you've read much of what he's written.)

Obviously the statement is intentionally provocative and hyperbolic, but he lays out his case. It's obviously subjective but, for a street shooter like him, it's sound.

And I'll say this, I haven't been as excited about a new camera for a long time as I am about my new GR III. It just makes me want to play hooky from work and take pictures!

Not Work-Safe Aurora - unedited Ricoh GR III images (NSFW)

I gave in to temptation and bough a Ricoh GR III last week and was eager to see how it would work shooting models. Early indication are that it's pretty fantastic (I think).

This is different from previous posts of mine here (I haven't posted in ages) in that these are 100% straight from the camera. I didn't crop, straighten, tone any of them. I didn't clean up any blemishes or otherwise futz with the images at all. I will do all that, but I thought some folks might be interested to see purely unaltered JPGs (I shot DNG+ for all of these).

The flickr downsampling doesn't do them justice. They're fantastically sharp. I'm sold!

Image sync app for GR III

Just got my GR III (woo-hoo!) and I found setting up the image sync app way more confusing than it should be. Not sure why there isn't a simple step-by-step description of how to transfer images, but here's what I had to do.

1. Phone: Disconnect form the phone's current wifi network. (To keep it from reconnecting automatically I had to "forget" the network.)
2. Camera: Turn Wireless LAN Setting > Action Mode > On.
3. Phone: Connect to the camera's wifi.
4. Image Sync: Open the app and connect to the camera by selecting Ricoh GR III from the list of supported cameras.

At that point I could access the camera tab in the app to view/transfer images.

None of this was clear from the online documentation or any kind of helps/tips within the app. Maybe I'm just dense (a distinct possibility, despite working in software product development for > 20 years) but I found it...unintuitive. Hope this helps anyone else who's struggling out there.

Ha! Alas, no. But this space is so nice, cheap, and readily available it's tough to find anywhere that can compete!

Ah, the metal conduit is still there; it's in the studio down the hall. :)

It is nice to e shooting that Acros again. I still love the super grainy look of Delta 3200, but it's nice to change it up every now and then with the silky smooth Acros.

I know it's heresy but I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel on LXs. I've bought two, both of which have issues which are essentially un-repairable. One still shoots (mostly) but they're super fragile. My K1000 seems indestructible and basically shoot circles around them. I'll probably put them up for sale here to someone that will love them more than me. Looking at them and thinking of the money spent (and opportunity cost) just makes me angry.

Re: Leicas, one thing I'll say in their favor is resale. Nothing holds its value like a Leica M (except maybe their lenses).

Heh, thx!

My comment was more: they're both digital files. The data differs but in the end it's...data. Output, rendering, etc., differ. But it's 1s and 0s.

I am curious about your workflow, though, and how the in-camera stuff you use compares to what you do with RAWs in post.

And bravo on that Nokton. It still has pride of place in my bag! :)
