The Wifi card would help me live peacefully.
As I'm sure most gadget geeks (which all photographers, musicians and computer owners are - sadly I'm all three) can testify, their addiction is not always compatible with the other loved ones that live with them. You know, the breathing variety. The problem is usually when going on holiday. As I'm carting case after case of necessary equipment to the car, I'm greeted with a 'are you really taking that?' each time. The laptop case usually gets the most attention as my wife questions exactly what I'm going to be doing with that thing since we're going to be on holiday, and I need to be sociable, and so on and on. If I only had a wifi SD card I may just be able to leave the laptop at home, and enjoy taking more photographs. I can upload all my shots safely to a server so I don't have to worry about the laptop. Ah the peace. The lower rate of nagging. The wifi SD card may just be one of the best things I could take on holiday with me!

Wow, tough competition. I voted for ones that I thought represented the them best. The trouble is, there are lots of great photos that I wasn't sure were about decay as much as the others.

I would rather hope that preference would go to a photo taken with a Pentax. Of course, with film there's no way to tell.

Yikes.... next time throw in a higher percentage of trash to make it easier for us to decide, ok?! I ran thru the list twice and felt terrible that I had to count out some beautiful shots.
Amazing stuff here! Well done everyone!

Brand Snobbery? Is it just here or everywhere?

Mr Nikon is the reason I used to put black tape over the logos on my PZ20. I got sick of people (particularly at tourist traps) leaning over to see the brand name of my camera.
Of course,I always wondered why someone would want to lug around a 28-500 f1.8, motorwind and bags of crap to take snaps of the misses infront of St Pauls Cathedral, but nevermind...

A friend of mine had a Nikon D40 and recently sold a very nice and rare electric guitar to buy a D90 because his 'photography is taking off'. I hope he's disappointed. I should have told him I can barely tell the difference between shots I have taken with my Canon A530 P&S and my K100D Super.

By the way, I used to work at a local pro camera store, and never got the sneer from other staff there. If my colleagues (admittedly Canon, Nikon and Leica users) could drink coffee with me, I felt perfectly accepted! (and the therapy is helping a lot too... LOL)

rparmar, Mattdm - thanks for the comparisons. Metz48 vs Sigma 530 it is. I just have to see what's available locally. I know a great store that will help me with the final coin-toss!

Thanks for the checklist, Presto. I like the one about hassling electrons!

Sounds like a plan! I think I'm the 'serious family member' as opposed to the Seasoned Pro, so hopefully there will be lots of amateur assistant. I could probably rope in the best man and make him work for a change!

I'm looking at flash prices locally, and the 540 is way out of range. $650CDN is out of the question. I understand the 360 might not be practical, but $250CDN is doable.
So what about the Metz 48 AF-1 ? I think it's a toss up between that and the Sigma EF 530DGP.

Another pondering: I have a Vivitar manual flash, GN 28. Can that be used with a light sensitive shoe mount to fill in shadows, or am I better off using a reflector?

Yes I have. It takes fantastic photos! I take it to Heritage Park, an historic village/park. I just use 120 film and shave down the edge of the spindles so it fits. If I can dig up the pictures I'll post them (if that's ok, it's not a Pentax!)

Awesome. Thanks for the tips. I've been dusting off the 50mm this weekend and took a few (hundred) pics on Mothers Day when my wife got her hair done. I posted the pics in the Gallery here, under Portraits. The focus-assist in the K100D works great! Well, I like it anyway.
Oh I also posted a couple of photos of my antique cameras in Misc. if anyone is interested...

Gotcha - that makes a lot of sense. And sounds quite doable! Thanks.

Those are great shots. If I come any where near the lighting quality you have there, I'll be ecstatic (and breath a sigh of relief hoping I never have to go through all that again!!)

Wow, great shots. And yes, very creepy. The one of the doll is pretty startling... and the one of the chair...*shudder.

Thanks for all the Metz info guys. Wheatfield, thanks for the instructions. What happens when the subject is further away or closer? How do I adjust for distance?
I'm just a bit concerned that a manual flash would require too much attention. For a wedding, at any rate. The Metz is pretty tempting though.
What sort of distances should I use a Sigma 530 / P 540 within? Don't the camera/flash talk to each other so that the exposure is always correct (yep, never used a dedicated flash...) ?

Good point. I never thought of it that way.
And Mr Rockies, that's a great testimony. I'll definitely use the 50mm. When you say flash on top, do you mean that you don't use a flash bracket? Is that another piece of gear I can do without :) ?

"Why go to Sigma one ?" Price. It's about the same price as the P AF360.

I forgot to mention I have a Pentax-M 50mm f1.7. I grew up with manual focus, so I don't depend on Autofocus. In fact, I remember reading loads of articles populated with whines by veterans that they don't trust autofocus.
How would the Metz60 work when I did want to shoot on Idiot Mode? Like the lenses, I'm also used to using a manual flash so it shouldn't be a problem, but in cases where I want to point and shoot it would be nice to have somebody (the flash) help me out.

Yup. Another nut that got asked to shoot a family members wedding, even though he's not a pro. But don't worry, they don't expect veteran quality.
So other than the usual 'Dont do it' advice (and I read the thread titled First Wedding), I need advice regarding gear I'll need.

I have a K100D Super, the standard 18-55 FA, a Sigma 28-200, monopod and an old manual flash (I used it with my Praktica which died a number of years ago...).

Budget is an issue, so I'm teetering between the AF360 and the Sigma EF-530 DG Super. Since I don't plan on shooting (m)any other weddings, although portrait photography may be in my future, is the 360 a really bad choice and am I going to kick myself for years to come? Or is the EF-530 a good replacement for the AF540?

I'm also planning on picking up a tripod (and will probably use the monopod for the reception).
Can I use a mini-softbox on the flash and maybe a lumiquest reflector? And, for filling in shadows will I need many reflectors? Are there DIY alternatives?

So many questions, but all help appreciated :)

I had Praktica MTL50 for years, then a Pentax PZ20. My first digital was a Canon A530, but I finally splurged on the fantastic K100D Super.
Now I'm shopping for a flash since my wife's niece is crazy enough to want me to shoot her wedding and I'm here looking for lots of advice.
Oh and it looks like I'm not the only limey - I always thought Pentax were very popular in England.

I have one quick question - where do people get those fancy 'proud owner' sig graphics?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting more out of my camera and becoming a better photographer. Maybe I'll even post some shots here:)

[Ok, I guess I'm not that new of a K100D Super owner.. I've had it just over a year now!]
