Replacing the sensor requires more disassembly/reassembly (and subsequent calibration) than the upgrade.
The differences between the K-1 and K-1 II were purposely limited to the mainboard (and maybe some other minor components), in order to make the upgrade possible.

No better sensor exists at present (for the specific application in the K-1) and the cost of a new sensor would far exceed the refurbishment cost being charged (sensor cost is a considerable portion of the camera cost).

I think that you are being overly demanding in your expectations regarding the condition of a used lens. Cut the seller some slack. Treat the seller like you'd like to be treated yourself. You are buying a "used" lens, lighten up!
Given how picky you are, I suggest that you only buy new lenses in the future to avoid disappointment.

According to all of the accounts I have read the weaker borders and lack of sharpness of the 28-75 are when wide open and disappear by f5.6. Although my experience with the lens on my K-1 is not yet extensive it does agree with the reports, f8 & f11 on a tripod being sharp.

Two photos by a Super-Takumar 55/1.8. I have a lot of "favourite" Takumars, but really, this one is a big, big favourite for its sharpness and dreaminess.
The Flickr Explore algo must like this lens too, because when I posted three photos by the lens on the same day last week, surprisingly, all three were Explored the next day. Once it came to its senses, Explore dropped the third photo, but the first two stayed the distance on the day, and here they are. |

Perhaps posting photos (K1 and FA 77) taken through three panes of a scratched Alaska Air window on a flight from Sacramento to Seattle isn't the best idea, but I thought these were interesting enough to share.
The first is a shot of the damaged Oroville dam spillway, which has recently made national news. After heavy storms, the (overflow) concrete spillway eroded and developed a huge defect, resulting in the precautionary evacuation of nearly 200K downstream people. Water was also flowing over the emergency spillway, just to the left of the eroding concrete spillway, for the first time in history. Surprisingly, the pilot of our flight didn't inform passengers that this was visible outside the window.
The second shot is a merged pano (about 5 shots) of Crater Lake, also taken through the airplane window. |

This is actually my second go-around with the DA 12-24. I bought one in 2010. It was my first high-end lens — sort of entry drug to the world of LBA and high-end Pentax glass. I ended up selling it a couple years later, mostly because of poor edge to edge performance at infinity focus (looking back, I suspect there may have been some decentering issues with that copy of the lens). Was fine for a few years without it, but at the beginning of this year, I felt I needed an ultra wide zoom for a planned trip to Bryce, Zion, Yosemite and Grand Canyon. I really endeavored to reconcile myself to one of those cheaper third party options, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't reconcile myself to the compromises the Tamron and Sigma options entailed, and so I purchased — at, admittedly, a fairly hefty price — the 12-24. I haven't used the lens a whole lot since it came into my hands, but when I have, it's delivered the goods, with sharp, crisp, contrasty images with those wonderful Pentax greens and blues. And my second version is definitely superior to the first — so I'm glad to have the lens back in the stable.

Thanks. I'm privilege to use the DA 15 in one of the most scenic areas in the world.
