Thank you so much for this amazing repair guide. The tip for keeping the screws from getting mixed up is genius. I am fortunate to have a really good soldering station so the repair was easy to do. You saved my K-50. I have a fully working camera again and I am so happy about it.

I'll be at an amateur radio electronics show. That could yield some interesting pictures.

The white body may be cooler internally than a black body when you are out in the hot sun. I don't know if this applies to your shooting situation.

I thought I read somewhere that the Pentax DA II lenses won't work on the *ist D. Is this the case? If not, are there any newer lenses that don't work on the *ist D? I want to buy a wide-angle zoom because my 28mm M lens isn't so wide-angle anymore!
Just to add: I have seen the lens compatibility chart on mosphotos.com but it doesn't seem to have the information that I am looking for.
EDIT: Never mind. I found the information I was looking for. Strangely enough, it was in the manual for my camera body and the lens manual on the Pentax website.

Thank you for the information about PhotoME. I installed it on my computer and saw the internal serial number field but it is not the same as what I can see of my serial number. I didn't realize there was so much information in the EXIF data!

I just got my first DSLR, a used *ist D. I know it is older now but I love it. The question I have is this: Can I find the serial number of the camera anywhere besides the little sticker on the bottom of the camera?
My camera has a gouge from a tripod right through the serial number. Only the first two numbers are clearly visible. I've looked on the box and couldn't find anything that seemed like it was the serial number.

For me, the amount of processing equals whatever is necessary to make the picture match my visualization of the scene. If my initial image capture is good, then I don't have to do much. If I've messed up but think I can still rescue the picture, I do a lot. I almost always do some Photoshop dodging around the edges of pictures.

I'm looking at the downloaded manual from pentaximaging.com and on page 226 of the manual there is a setting for using the aperture ring, item 23 in the list. If the setting is still "Prohibited", you should set it to "permitted." This should allow you to use old lenses. Don't forget to set your mode dial to "M."
I don't have this model myself but it seems that all the Pentax DSLRs have the same setting that prevents use of older lenses.

Thanks for the further thoughts. I sent the camera back and had hoped to get a K100D body that was only $10 more but the thing was gone the day I shipped the *ist DL back.

Thanks for your replies, folks. I've decided to return the camera because it was not what I had actually ordered. I had ordered the *ist D, not *ist DL. There are a couple of things about the DL that I don't like so I figured I'll just send it back.
Also, I think that even if it had been what I ordered, I'd send it back due to the sensor "gunk." It wasn't listed in the description and I'm not sure that it would make a good first-time sensor cleaning project.

Today I got my first DSLR, a used *ist DL that I bought from B & H. I was really happy about getting this camera until I took some pictures of the sky. There was "stuff" all over the sensor. When I looked at the sensor itself, it looked as if someone had sneezed or spat on it. Sorry about being gross, but I can't think of a better way to describe the stuff on the sensor. My disappointment is huge.
So now I come to you folks for advice. Should I try to clean the sensor myself, or should I just simply send the camera back? Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.

If the dust is stuck on the negatives, you could probably soak it off in a tray filled with flowing water, like a photographic rinse tray or in a film processing reel and tank. Before doing so, you should check the film manufacturer's web site for processing instructions to determine if any special chemicals are needed, or if the soaking can be done at all. Also, remember that the wet emulsion on the film is very fragile, so handle with care. The wet negatives should be hung in a dust-free place to dry, but I guess you knew that already!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. I just found out that my camera should arrive tomorrow, not on Wednesday. The excitement mounts. (Not to be confused with K or bayonet mounts.)

I am the proud owner of two K1000s, a few lenses and a Spotmeter V. I have been dabbling in photography for 25+ years now and most of my equipment is vintage early 80s. I do some large format (4x5) photography also.
I am going to be receiving a *ist D on, or about, Wednesday the 20th. I know it is old but it is what I can afford right now. It will be my first digital SLR and I'm really looking forward to it. Don't know why I didn't think of getting a used camera body years ago!
