I think my point, and bymy141 was stating, is not understood. Momentarily, let's put the effect on the image noise aside. "Over-exposing" by 1 EV at ISO 1600 is allowing the same amount of light to the sensor than the "right exposure" at ISO 800--regardless of the combination of aperture and shutter speed.
And bymy141 was questioning, how would one do that, if, likely, one arrived at the high ISO setting because it allowed the combination of aperture and shutter speed desired. Overexposure by 1 EV at this point sends you back to what was apparently not a satisfactory combination to begin with.

bymy141 was suggesting, that adding a stop at ISO 1600 effectively sent u back to ISO 800, so the technique was flawed because u could've shot in ISO 800 to begin with avoiding the high noise of ISO 1600.
The suggestion was not that ISO 1600 + 1EV produce the same noise as ISO 800. They dont, the point is that it is effectively the same exposure, so shooting at ISO 800 is the real solution to lower the noise.

U dont have it wrong. That technique effectively sends u back to ISO 800. So you shoot the "right" exposure at ISO 800.

Well, there are other APS-C primes in the range of focal length and max aperture, though perhaps not many for Pentax mount. However, the perception of sharpness, subjective it may be, is between the image and the viewer, not the lens. The lens is just the instrument that produces the image. I am not interested so much in how it compares to other lenses, but in whether the results it produces are perceived as sharp. I don't think that is a moot point. It may be to you, but it is not to me, which is why I asked the question.

Thanks for your response Sailor.
I did see your images, and some others you have uploaded to other posts with the same lens. They look very sharp to me. However they are not full size originals, which is why I asked for your opinion.
DPreview states "Unfortunately though it's rather soft wide open, and even when stopped down is never breathtakingly sharp in the fashion we'd hope for from a premium prime. This is a little disappointing, especially considering the price and relatively slow maximum aperture; but then again you rarely have to shoot a lens this wide at F4 anyway (especially with the in-body stabilization in all current and recent Pentax DSLRs)."
Though I mistyped adding an extra "a very" by accident to my post, which may have made it sound more emphatic than I intended, I think that DPreview did intend to mean the lens is pretty soft. In fact the examples they posted, in full size, do look very soft in close inspection. However, as you, and others have posted here and elsewhere, this may have to do with camera focusing accuracy. There do seem to be a bunch of people under the impression that this is a soft lens.
Regardless, I was happily impressed by your results, as I would very much like this to be a good lens which I would like to get. It may be a QC issue with the lens DPreview got, or maybe he had had too much coffee and forgot his tripod... who knows.
I would resolve the issue myself if I had a Pentax body, but I don't. And before making the investment in a system I am not familiar with, I wanted to ask those in the know for their experience.

This lens precisely is what is keeping me undecided about buying a new Pentax K-7 when it becomes available. I have no legacy systems or lenses as I have not taken a shot in a decade. But I will be moving to Spain soon and decided it was time to go back. I used to be a Nikon fan, but what I really wanted (other than a Leica M8.2 hehe...) is Nikon d300 build quality (and features) in Nikon d90 body size. Nikon does not have that, or anybody else for that matter... until Pentax came up with the k-7. Everything I want in a camera!!! But what has kept me undecided was prime WA glass...
Considered the Zeiss K mouns, but it's silly to pay $1300 for a camera and cancel out most of its features on the lenses, impressive as they may be. So the obvious choice is this lens... except dpreview.com claims it's very a very soft lens!!! ( Pentax smc DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited Lens Review: 4. Now, this is not what your images look like at all. However this are small, processed images. In your opionon, Sailor, is this lens in any way "soft" ?

I really appreciate your response. Those are some really nice shots you have posted! And they do look sharp. I do not mind zoom lenses and have been considering the 12-24mm as a possibility. The 15 f4 Limited seems to get a bad review everywhere as a soft lens (for instance here Pentax smc DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited Lens Review: 4. Conclusion & samples: Digital Photography Review ). Which is sad, because it seems to be such a beautifully crafted lens!
In any case, your confidence in the Pentax 12-24mm is certainly very helpful.
There is also a good chance new glass will be announced tomorrow as well!

Hi everyone. Excited to have joined right before the K7 gets released tomorrow.
Actually we are moving to Tarragona, Spain, in August. True to mid-life crisis, I will be pursuing a one year wine-making internship in the Priorat, one of the most beautiful mediterranean valleys my eyes have ever laid eyes on.
Which brings me to the quest for the elusive perfect camera system to take with me. Though I am a web developer, and have not touched a camera in a decade, I have an MFA in photography from RIT--I understand cameras and photography pretty well. Honestly I used to be a Nikon fan, and still think highly of their systems. However what I am looking for they do not have is D300 quality on a D90 size. It also has to be available before August.
Which brings me to the K-7. Very exciting. I may very well be all I am looking for in a camera.
I am joining this forums because I do have a concern that I am hoping this community will help demistify. Lenses. Specifically Pentax wide angle lenses. In Priorat I will need wide angles for the vast vistas of the valley and close shots in the vineyards with a sense of place in the background. However, all my research seems to indicate that Pentax APS-C lenses are a bit inferior in the wide angle department when compared to Nikon/Canon and even Olympus.
Is this true? Please prove me wrong! Make the K7 end my dslr quest!
