I’ve had my K20D for years. Always thought about upgrading but none of the replacements seemed good enough. This is it! Saving my money for K-3! Hoping for further improvements in high ISO shooting and really really really hoping that AF is as awesome as it sounds.

***HOT DEAL*** Sweet Tripod for under $20 SHIPPED!

I ordered this tripod as well. Placed an order on Sunday night and got it yesterday. I got burned with extra shipping and handling to Canada. The total came up to about $55.
Still, I’d say tripod is worth the money. Nowhere near my Manfrodo in terms of stability and pure ruggedness, but it’s way lighter and smaller. It comes in a pretty carrying bag too!
Legs are a bit “flexy” and tripod may not be all that stable fully extended. But I don’t think I would use it fully extended since I can’t even see through a viewfinder.
Works good with my K20 with battery grip and Tamron 28-75 lens.

Yeah, I agree with you. This little girl also loves to be in pictures and loves to pose! So cute!

Here is another one from yesterday ( I think I could have done a better job with lighting):

Hey guys… Just got my Flashpoint (MT-16) wireless triggers and ND filters. Decided to give it a test. First time using of-camera flash with triggers. I am still kinda new to photography and even though I read up a lot on the theory, I lack practice.. :) I love to shoot cars and landscapes, but now I am wanting to take more portraits.
These are my neighbour’s kids. They are little angels! Everyone loves them!

Radio triggers and flash sync speed

Yeah,.. As I wrote in my message; I know that camera did not sync properly with the flash, and I’m aware that rear curtain is covering the sensor so fast that that portion of the sensor does not get properly exposed with the flash. I am puzzled why my sync speed is lower with radio triggers compared to when I trigger 360FGZ optically.

Hmm,.. Might try that.

Great info! Thanks!.. Cybersync system looks very nice, but it is going to blow my budget! :)
Sorry, beginners question; how do I get my shutter to 1/160? My shutter goes in these steps: 1/125, 1/180, 1/250,... I don’t think I get 1/160. Are there some sttings I need to do to get that?

Thanks for the suggestion. I am actually now considering CTR 301p system as the receivers have that hot shoe adapter.. so I do not need to mess about with cables. Cool!

That’s what I was thinking too,.. feel bad for some Canon/Nikon guys who have to step down to 1/160 or less from possible 1/320 sync speeds they could get with Pocket Wizards.

Radio triggers and flash sync speed

So a friend from work is willing to sell me his Vivitar 285 (old, non HV version).
He also knows that I am interested in getting some budget radio triggers so he lent me his Phottix PT-16 set too... just to play around. I am pretty new to photography and absolute noob with flash photography. :o

I noticed that with max sync speed of 1/180 I get a black bar on the bottom of the frame. Bummer.. read a lot about how we can’t push the shutter past 1/180 and I’m very disappointed that I might be locked to measly 1/125 shutter speed .
Now as a kicker, I do not get rear curtain showing if I use my Pentax 360FGZ in the wireless mode without radio triggers triggering the flash. I can’t test it with my friends Phottix PT-16 as I can’t attach it to my flash. I think I need one of those hot-shoe type of connectors to connect it to the wireless flash, right?

Question; Am I having this issue with slow sync speed because of the radio triggers or because of the flash?

Does anyone with Cactus V4 and Vivitar 285 have any experience with this?

Oh, I am using K20D...

Thank you very much!

Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 auto focus question

I recently upgraded from K100D to K20D and first thing I noticed is improved focus speed. Not really night and day difference, but noticeable improvement.

Also, a friend of mine uses Canon 40D, and focusing speed in action (indoor volleyball) is much better than my K20D can do.. However, once those shots are viewed on the monitor, big majority have focus locked on something other than the subject. And no, it’s not a consistent back/front focus issue.

Sweet! I will go through those links guys. Work is pretty dead so this will keep me occupied.

On a side note.. I HATE PHOTOGRAPHY!!!!! Yesterday I bought Tamron 90mm 1:1 Macro lens... While walking around I also saw at Henry’s Pentax DA* 50-135 on sale for $900. Going to pick it up during my lunch break along with Lowepro AW300 bag. I will be officially broke! Ahhhh,... I can not do anything about it!!!! The urge is stronger than me!!!!!

Hey all!
I’m just starting to discover flash photography and starting to play with remote flash. I’ve heard term strobe lighting. Would that be same as flash lighting?

I have K20D and Pentax AF 360 flash that I trigger wirelessly via onboard flash. Instead of putting flash on top of cabinets, roof of my car or on top of whatever is near by, I am planning to get a proper light stand… maybe even one with umbrella!... like a pro! :D
While thinking about that, I started to think about adding another flash to my lighting equipment. I’m thinking about getting a flash that’s perhaps more powerful than my AF360, so it can be my main flash and AF360 could be used to reduce shadows. Is this a good idea?
I am also planning to go with a different wireless trigger system. Something that has a transmitter on the camera and receivers plug into the flash units (I guess with some hotshoe mount connector??). Reason for this is because I am considering buying some cheap flash that may mot work with K20 wireless flash mode. No way that I can afford AF540FGZ!
What wireless trigger system would you recommend?
What flash unit would you recommend?
Would I need Pentax compatible flash, or could I use even the ones for Canon/Nikon hotshoes?

Needles to say, I'm on a tight budget (as most of us are).. :)

Does anyone know what software could be used to stitch all the photos together and play them at 21 f/sec as a movie?

Weird noise on the underexposed part of the subject

Thanks a lot guys! I will try changing the default exposure settings to 0. Also, I think that there is a way to remove in camera noise correction (if that has anything to do with it)…
If all fails I will get a different bead of cat! :)

On a side note.. When looking at this picture in Internet Explorer or in Firefox, noise I spoke about is completely gone. Even White balance is different. It is a bit cooler in explorer and in Firefox than when I look at it in Lightroom or Windows picture viewer.
Did anyone experience this before?

Thank you all!

Weird noise on the underexposed part of the subject

Sorry if this question has been asked before.
I’m relatively new to photography and may not know exactly what I’m doing (one of those guys who gets a couple of keepers out of thousand less-than-mediocre shots).

I just tried wireless flash and noticed an interesting issue. Non exposed, or rather, underexposed portion of the subject has some strange “digital” noise.

Here is the shot of my subject Kiwi:

This was one of the first shots I’ve taken with the wireless flash.
Flash af-360fgx
Camera: K20D
ISO200
75mm
F6.7
1/180 sec

Here is the 100% crop oh Kiwi’s face.

Notice his right eye and fur has some weird noise. It’s like camera is trying to forcefully expose that part of the subject.
I normally shoot in jpg and wonder if there is anything I should do with the camera settings to get rid of that noise. I thought that ISO 200 should be pretty good as far as the noise level goes... hmm,..

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I’m relatively new to photography and very new to K20D. Thank you!

I just got my 10-20 few days ago. Read a lot of reviews about high percentage of bad samples, so I took time buying one. Instead of saving few bucks and buying one online, I went to several local stores and ended up testing about 5 lenses.
Differences between samples were astonishing! Some lenses were very sharp in the centre, but totally unacceptable as you more towards the edges.
Sample I bought was not the sharpest at open aperture in the centre, but it was way way better than any other in the corners and as you move away from centre. At above F8 all lenses look the same in the centre. Since I will shoot at F8 and above, it was easy to choose the best lens.
I’ve used it for past couple of days and pretty much use it at 10mm all the time. So much fun! Hope it's OK if I post a couple of shots I took today...

I just pulled the trigger and bought a K20 on Amazon for about $620. Upgrading from K100D I had for few years now.
Amazing deal for a camera that is still being sold here in Canada for almost $1100CAD..

Could not really justify spending huge money on K7 even though I’d love to have it.
