niceshot, where do you recommend I send it to for repair? I am not having any luck getting any confirmation about what repairs will be done or cost.

Right now I am leaning towards sending it in with a note (hope they actually read it) and asking if they could fix the focusing issue and before they complete the repair if they could let me know how much it would cost to replace the SDM motors. I would like to get it fixed because like you said Glenn it is one of the few high quality wide angle WR zoom lenses available. I have a kit 18-55 lens from my K-x to hold me over as well as a FA31 coming in the mail as I write this! So I could be without this lens for awhile.
Base on your experience, it could be 2-4 months before I get it back, lol.

I have no problem with the screwdrive since I have other lenses that are screwdrive and I am used to the sound. But, since the flat fee for opening it up and fixing the infinity focus would hopefully be covered by the $212.50 flat fee, if replacement of the SDM motors made it like $300, I would be OK with that. And if SDM failed in the future, then I would go screwdrive again. I just don't know if the infinity focus issue will be covered by the flat fee and how much the SDM would cost to replace.

Do you know if that flat fee includes replacement of the SDM. My SDM has had intermittent issues where it works and doesn't work. Currently it is working and it works more often than not. Also forgot to mention, I did email them asking if SDM replacment would be included, but I have not received any responses. Precision Camera said they couldn't tell me what they would or wouldn't fix when I explained the situation. All they said was "The base rate is regardless of the issues you are experiencing with your lens. It includes the shipping from us to you, a 90 day warranty on any of the work we perform, and a complete repair and cleaning. It does not include high cost parts. If we need to replace parts that exceed the base rate, we will contact you with the new repair rate. If it goes out of your budget, you are only responsible for the return shipping."

Hi,
Recently my DA* 16-50 has begin to not be able to focus at infinity. It went out during my last vacation. I can't focus to infinity in manual or autofocus, using either the viewfinder or the live-view screen. It just started to happen recently after converting it to screwdrive. It worked perfectly fine in screwdrive and I didn't have any issues before it happened, but I only had it in screwdrive for a couple weeks before my vacation.
SDM had issues in the past, intermittent like usual and I didn't want it to fail while on vacation, thus the reason I converted it to screwdrive. I reverted back to the original ROM and SDM still works, but focus at infinity is still a problem.
I tried contacting KEH (no response yet) and Precision for quotes. Precision has a flat fee of $212.50 which is reasonable, but they won't clarify what they will fix. If I send it in for repair, I was contemplating getting SDM replaced while it was there.
Has anybody recently used Precision for a 16-50 repair, including a SDM replacement? Any estimates on cost or can you recommend some place that will replace the SDM motors and fix the focus issue? This lens is from 2009.

Hello,
I was wondering if anybody had any good links to forums for Nikon and Canon where people are helpful and rather nice (similar to the people here at PF). Just trying to get some insight into the competition to understand where they are coming from and it is always nice to know what other people are saying about their choice of brand. English site would be nice.

I am on the hunt for a used K20D or a K-x body. Let me know if you have a good deal on one. I am looking for body only, with or without grip (without grip preferred if it is a lot less). Update on 12/3/2009:
I am no longer looking for a K-x body, I will buy a new one in January if I can't find a K20D before. I am looking for a K20D, most I can do is $475 for the body only or $525 for body + grip. I am mostly interested in the body but I know some people are selling with the grip because they are upgrading to a K7.

Item Description
For sale is a Pentax K110D, SMC Pentax-DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL lens, and 52mm Tiffen UV filter. I purchased this camera new from RC Willey back in late 2007. I just took some pictures during lunch today and the exif data of the last picture says that the shutter count was 5848. Both the camera and the lens are in excellent condition. The lens has always had a Tiffen UV filter on it (included with sale).
The lens has the hood, rear cap, front cap, and filter.
The camera has the body cap and neck strap.
(I could not find the boxes, only the manual.).
The reason for the sale is because I am trying to come up with funds to purchase a K20D, K-7, or K-x (undecided still on a camera it will depend on what kind of deal I can get). I already have a K100D Super that I will be keeping for all my Takumar and manual K lenses. I have posted pictures of the camera below. I took a few quick pictures using the K110D and the 18-55mm lens. You will also find some pictures that I took during the last couple of years. Bear with the quality of the pictures. The pictures from today I took quickly during lunch and the older pictures were taken while I was still using "Auto" mode. Not until this past year have I started shooting in Av mode, M mode, adjusting ISO settings, adjusting WB, and using manual focus lenses.
I can accept paypal (via bank account or paypal balance) otherwise if you use paypal (with credit card) add paypal fees ~3% to total cost.

The small pictures were resized, click on the picture if you would like to see the full size original. None of these pictures have had any post processing done on them. They are as they came out from the camera and they were shot in 3 star mode (which is 1 below RAW so it sould be JPEG fine). Many of these pictures are of our pup Aspen, she is an American Staffordshire Terrier mix and she joined our family on July 8th, 2007. She was the reason for the camera. Our previous P&S Kodak P880 was to slow to keep up with her movement.
