Pentax announcement: Considering developing new film camera

For me, the most interesting thing about this is the viewfinder of the fully mechanical SLR. When the mirror doesn't have to divert some the light toward sensors, the image in the viewfinder can become even clearer. Pair the large viewfinder of MX with the bright glass of K3iii, and the clarity should be astounding.

Tried that with K-1 outdoors at dusk. f/8 seems fine, f/11 is pushing it.

So much this. The Pentax Forums should have a section for these. I was looking for additional info on the new 4x20 WP and this site is super useful for all the obscure Pentax gear details, but when it comes to non-photography optics, there is nothing.

How to get Pentax colors in darktable?

Funny you should mention it. With Darktable 2 I had minimal color issues, but now I installed version 3 and it all fell apart.

How to get Pentax colors in darktable?

I'm using darktable for my image processing and the colors I get are way off. Even if I use "pentax like" base curve without color preservation, the colors are just not there — the hue of seems to be more purple (than both Pentax jpegs and real life), the contrast is weak etc. I tried to fix the colors manually, but I have no idea of what I am doing.

If anyone here is using darktable, perhaps you could share your basic Pentax presets?

Most probably the Mac is deceiving you. The .bin file should be copied to the SD card as-is.

Switched to FF, which lenses to change?

Wouldn't the 24–70 + 100mm macro negate the need for 28–105? With such kit the only niche that the 28–105 would fill would be a single walk-around lens.

Abstract CD with water drops

I feel that for an abstract shot the scene is too recognisable. The centre of the image is visibly a plain old CD. If you have a macro lens or an extension tube, try getting closer.

Another good thing about getting closer is that composing the image becomes easier. Currently you have about 40 droplets in in the image, mostly random and 2 of them are not in a conventional droplet shape. If your image has 4-8 visible droplets, it's easier to arrearage them in a composition.

Just showed it to my wife and the reaction was “Wow, nice!”. The reflections are what is noticeable right away and that makes the wow moment. After the initial impression you can start to see all the imperfections of the image, so you are right to suspect it's not going to win any prizes. I personally would prefer less of clouds, out-of-focus branches and ground (could be solved by moving 3 meters closer), higher contrast and darker image would make a more dramatic impression, but my wife said that the darker picture looked more like Mordor with molten metal, so perhaps not. Super ideally you would have some well lit subject on the ice to complete the composition, but that would be a truly unrealistic expectation.

Yes, macro photography is a special case, where smaller sensor is a direct benefit for extra close up. I think this conversation can be summarised to “Ask your doctor, if full frame is right for you”.

I think you have misinterpreted me. When I talk about resolution drop off, I don't mean that the sensor is to blame, but rather the sensor-lens combo. If you have a razor sharp D-FA 50mm at f/2, moving from 16 to 24 MP on APS-C will probably give you about 33% more detail. However, if you have a pinhole camera, those extra megapixels on the same surface won't give you much more detail, but increased surface will.

That is to say, if a lens is not super sharp, but is about as sharp in the centre as it is in the corners, you can get more details out of a picture by moving from APS-C to FF and keeping pixel density, rather than increasing megapixels on the APS-C. However, that if is a big if. Lenses tend to be noticeably sharper in the centre. I have not seen any studies of FF Pentax lenses in this regard. It is perfectly possible that for a same FF lens K-3 will give more detail than K-1, I just suspect that 35mm f/2.4 and 100mm f/2.8 macro will give more detail on K-1.

Technically true. But at least in my photography I often crop half of the image away, for example, if I see that a background is too distracting, I will crop a landscape portrait into a portrait portrait. This can easily make a 36mp image into a 16mp image. You might argue that a 16mp “should be enough for everybody”, but lenses tend not to be super sharp, so those 16mp images can easely turn into effective 8mp images. And 8mp essentially are 4K screen size.

Having a 24mp APS-C will not help in any way. I suspect that effective megapixels will even be lower for APS-C for the same lenses.

Mirror lockup and potential sensor damage ...

I depends on your lens. If you have a 20mm f/5.6, it might not damage the sensor. If the sun is out of focus, it can help a lot too. Sunset might give you 3 stops, but a fast lens could still manage to hurt the sensor.

Disclaimer: I do not speak from my own experience.

Maybe this is general knowledge, but I had a problem with SR in video mode — the camera was on a tripod, but the image was still floating. After a bit of experimenting I found out that the SR was not compensating for the camera shake, but for the movement of the face. Had to turn it off, because the video was in a tight framing and the SR exposed parts of props that shouldn't be visible. Not sure if the feature is really cool or a bit annoying. Couldn't find it described in the manual.

Something similar in Swedish repair center. I still had to get in the queue by the end of September, but I will actually send the camera when the spares arrive (probably in October).

Gave my K-1 for an upgrade, the store clerk later told that the Swedish repair centre is overwhelmed with orders. The good thing is that I will have my K-1 for the early autumn shots. By the sound of it, my place in the queue won't be available until October. Looks like the upgrade is in high demand.

From the summary:

Coatings and IS are irrelevant to Pentax system. Not sure if Pentax uses Tamron AF. I wonder if the new elements do much for the image. Alas, there are no image samples.
