HSS Question

I am no engineer but I would say that the "cheap" triggers are most likely limited due to "cheap" components. With any wireless trigger there is some millisecond delay introduced by the wireless trigger and they must respond to the trigger voltage and communicate very quickly with the receiver, so cheaping out on parts may limit sync speeds. The issue of HSS is really p-ttl as HSS is just "telling" the flash to fire multiple times in a quick succession while the shutter sweeps over the sensor. I believe there is only one set of wireless triggers that support Pentax p-ttl (aokatec ak-ttl). I can't vouch for them personally but I believe that they do support HSS.

Amazon.com no longer sell Pentax?

There are still listing for Pentax, but if you look you won't find any that are actually being sold by Amazon.com. All the listing I looked at (K-5, K-5 II, K30, 18-135, 15mm 35mm) are being sold by other re sellers and only being fulfilled by Amazon. I can't remember a time in the past when this has occurred.

using Flash with auto iso.

lightbulb,
If it is anything like the k-r then it won't do exactly what you want it to do. I find that in Aperture priority mode (assuming you are using P-TTL here) the camera tends to push the shutter speed down (1/10 to 1/60) instead of pushing the ISO up. So you don't get consistent results picture to picture. Your first shot might be 1/30 at ISO 200 and the next might be 1/100 at ISO 800. So you end up getting a weird mix of ambient / flash from one pic to the next and sometimes motion trails if it pushes the shutter speed too low. I would recommend that you pick an ISO that you are happy with instead of using auto mode, at least if you want to get more consistent results with your flash.

Are these light sets good for ....

Disregard, I missed your opening line, sorry.

There was no link in your post so it is hard to know exactly what you would be getting and at what price. I would not recommend this type of setup. It is unlikely to give you enough light for shooting moving objects (people) or enough light for large objects or outdoors and even if they are bright enough they are likely to blind your subject. Unless you plan on shooting mostly video you would be must better served with a couple of YN-560-IIs (or any other manual flash) and some cheap umbrellas and light stands. If you then pair that with some radio triggers (I use cactus v5) you will have a reasonably powerful and flexible setup for a reasonable amount ($380 to $500 depending on deals, and the quality of your stands and umbrellas).

how to control ambient vs flash light?

Ichabod,
It's not really as difficult as it seems, it takes all of a minute or so get Tv mode setup, just walk the shutter down from 1/180 until you are happy with the ambient mix. As for manual mode it takes a little more thinking, but you can get good results quickly with a little practice.

Now if I really have to I can use P mode with P-TTL but the results are not as good, not to say that the photos are unusable, but Manual or Tv will give you more consistency, especially if you set the ISO instead of picking a ISO range.

My real bone to pick with the Pentax flash system is the counter intuitive way that it adjusts flash power in relation to exposure compensation, and the low sync speed (1/250 would be great).

how to control ambient vs flash light?

Ichabod,
If I am using P-TTL then I will either use Tv or Manual mode. Tv when I might not be the only one using the camera and manual when I am the only shooter. In Tv I take a couple of test shots and walk the shutter down from 1/180 to maybe as low as 1/60 to balance my ambient light. Then depending on how varied the lighting is I either set a specific ISO (400) or a range (200 - 800 / 1600). This allows me to get reasonably predictable result and I can let me wife or friends shoot and it just works. I still do get sporadic under / over exposed pics but I am comfortable with the results.

If I am the only person shooting then I set it to manual and I might even switch to manual flash if my lighting isn't going to change too much.

I would agree that Pentax does need to do some work on their flash system. It is not in the same league as Nikon and its priorities when used in P mode with P-TTL get really poor results, it tends to go much too low with the shutter speed 1/10 to 1/40 and too high with the ISO and barely uses any of the flash power.

Flash questions

Here are a few answers, also I would consider moving this thread to the flash section of the forum.

1) I believe that the difference between MASTER and COMMANDER mode is that Master uses the built-in flash for part of the exposure. In commander mode it still fires the built-in flash but it fires at it lowest level so that it does not have a big impact on the total exposure.

2) It depends on the flash, if ti is a flash that supports p-ttl and it is in p-ttl mode then it should work as a p-ttl flash. If the flash does not support p-ttl or is not in p-ttl mode it will be a dumb slave and only fire at whatever power level it is set at.

3) There are two options, look up how to make a IR pass thru using gels. That way most of the visible light is blocked and only the IR, which triggers the slave flash, will make it thru the gels. Or you could get a set of radio triggers, I use the cactus v5 triggers which are pretty cheap and reliable, but they do not support p-ttl.

Hope that helps.

flash dilema
Posted By usrbrv8

First off,
TTL - works using a sensor in the camera to check the exposure level and sends a signal to the flash to stop when a proper exposure has been achieved.

P-TTL - uses a pre-flash meter to determine the correct exposure level, hence you get that slight strobe effect before the actual exposure. This is the P-TTL system reading the "scene" and calculating the power level for the flash to get the correct exposure.

The K-R does not have a TTL sensor so your only options for automated flash are P-TTL and using a flash with an auto mode (thyristor). At your price range I am not sure if there is a good option for you, but if you check this guide The Definitive Guide - Pentax P-TTL Flash Comparison you might be able to find a generic flash that meets your needs and price range.

Personally I would just get 1 or 2 Yongnuo YN-560 II and learn to shoot manually, this should work well if you are doing off camera portraits. Once you get the hang of manual flash you should be able to produce much more consistent results.

Pentax Unilateral Pricing Policy
Posted By usrbrv8

This whole price change policy just makes no sense to me from a market share perspective. They announce a new price policy to protect B&M stores but no new B&M stores and seemingly no new sales presence to cultivate or grow the B&M market.

So at the moment they have done nothing to improve the value proposition they are offering customers.

Basically they are saying give us more money now and maybe in a year or two you might see cameras/lenses in your local market, get better support, a real sales presence in local markets, and have a reasonable 2-5 year warranty on lenses. But they didn't even go that far because they have not even promised any of that yet. I really hope Ricoh cleans house at Pentax Imaging because this has been handled really poorly.

If they don't get some positive news ( K-R / K-5 replacement, FF, extended warranties, New B&M contracts, etc..) out soon there is going to be nothing but bitching in the forums people jumping ship. Which is only to drive away new customers.

Jennverr,
Both of those flashes are rather large, no HSS capability, & no P-TTL. If you want an on-camera flash I might recommend the the Metz 50. It is a little smaller and gives HSS and P-TTL. From a purely off camera perspective I would agree with enoeske, you really can't beat a pair of YN560's and some cactus v5s.

Had my first opportunity to shoot with the 15mm Limited yesterday evening. Sadly I missed the actual sunset and there is not much of interest to shoot in suburbia in Illinois in late February, especially when there is no snow. For just a quick walk around the neighbor hood I think this lens is a winner.

So here are my first few attempts.

Mike,
Which Cokin filter system do you use, I was under the impression that they did not work well for lenses wider than 20mm, but seeing your pics I guess you have found a way to make it work.

Would a setup like this work?
Get a cheap 49mm filter, Tiffen 49mm UV Protector Filter 49UVP B&H Photo Video remove glass.
Get a Lee 49mm wide angle adapter, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/87140-REG/LEE_Filters_WAR049_Adapter_Ring_49mm.html I would hope this is just enough distance to get past the lens hood without creating vignette.

Do you think I could fit a 49mm to 67mm step up adapter instead of the 49mm tiffen filter. The reason being is that I have another lens with a 67mm filter size, so that way I could use the same Lee Adapter ring for both lenses.

Attach Lee Filter Holder LEE Filters Foundation Kit FK B&H Photo Video with only 1 or 2 sets of filter holder blocks.
Then slide in what ever ND or ND Grad filter I wanted to use (HiTech, Lee, etc..)

I assume this could be done a little cheaper if I went with Cokin instead of Lee, right?

Thanks

Well this thread got to me and I purchased the 15 limited, it will be here tomorrow. I have seen many great landscape shots, but how are most of you controling the brightness of the sky:/
Grad ND filter with a hard transition, like a Lee or conkin filter system?
Or are you exposure stacking and fixing in Photoshop?
Or is stopping the lens down and using a long shutter time enough to keep the sky from blowing out.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, I will be taking my lens to Asheville NC next week and I hope to get some good waterfall and Blue Ridge parkway shots.

Shutter speed in P-TTL mode

I wish there was a flash priority option where the camera prioritizes the flash first over the other settings, so you don't end up at 1/10 shutter, ISO 1200, and the flash fires at 1/64. I guess I would like to see that when I am in "A" mode and I choose f5.6 for the camera to first recognize that I have a flash (in P-TTL mode) and up flash power before pushing up ISO or pushing down shutter speed. Maybe some sort of setting where it reads the distance from the AF to make its determination of the balance of shutter, ISO, and flash power.

Shutter speed in P-TTL mode

Twarp,
I have tried to us A or Tv mode with my flash also and I could never get consistent results, some shots would have too much ambient and some not enough. So I switched to shooting in M mode and it has made things actually much easier.

With the DA 35mm 2.4 I would start with these setting, assuming you are shooting indoors under tungsten lights.

Apateur - f4 to f5.6, lower if you need more subject isolation
ISO - 200 or 400, you shouldn't need to go higher unless your subject is very far from the flash or it is really dark
Shutter Speed - Variable, I would start at 1/30 and work up from there until you get an ambient balance that you are happy with. The flash should be stopping the motion if the subject looks blurry it is because your shutter was open too long and there was too much ambient exposing your subject after the flash fired.

TZH,
At the moment it does not look like Yongnuo has any plans to release a Pentax P-ttl flash (at least no plans I have read about and they have never made a p-ttl flash before so I don't know why they would start now). That being said it would be nice if they would, a little more competition in that area might force Pentax Ricoh to make some updates to their line up (AF360).

Since Yonguno already has a good deal of experience reverse engineering Canon and Nikon ttl it would be nice to see them take a crack at p-ttl and maybe release a p-ttl supporedt radio trigger.

I was supprised that it is only like $6.00 more expensive thatn the original model. I will probably be ordering one next month and will post some pics if no one beats me to it.

I would say that I don't need that many MP either, I just wonder if they could produce any type of full frame dslr that does not land in the Sigma SD1 price range. I think for the right camera I could be convinced to spend 2500, if we also got a new flash system (1/250 sync or better) I might even push my budget closer to 3000.

Pentax D800 equivalent

With the new Nikon D800 just announced and all of the full frame rumors going around here I had a question.
Could Pentax build a sub $3000.00 full frame camera, (K-5 full frame upgraded features to compete with the D800)?
I am not asking will they actually do that but could they hit that price point or would the lower sales volume prevent Pentax from pricing competitively with Nikon?
