Pentax A 50mm f/1.7 Manual Focus A mode Asking Price

This is a GREAT entry into the world of prime lenses. It's not autofocus but still has A mode to stop the aperture down. It's very crisp when stopped down a bit and offer beautiful bokeh wide open. I LOVE this lens for the price and the quality of the pictures.
Lens works well. Lens is fungus and haze free. No real noticible wear.

Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Asking Price
310 Item Location
New York, NY Item Description
ED is low-dispersion glass which helps minimize color aberration
Don't confuse this with the kit lens. This has an ALL metal mount. The lens that comes with the kit is the DA L and has a plastic mount.
The extra reach of this 55-300mm over the 55-200mm makes it a better buy.
This is an inexpensive good quality zoom lens. Very sharp. Lens functions well. There's a tiny bit of wear around the lens hood grooves. Lens is fungus and haze free.
Sold my K7 body and now my 5 lenses (FA 35mm f/2.0, FA 50mm f/1.4, DA II 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED and AF-540 FGZ flash).

Pentax SMC DA II 18-55 f3.5-5.6 Asking Price

New York, NY Item Description
This is the DA II which is slightly improved over the original DA.
People often confuse this as the kit lens. This version has an ALL metal mount. The lens that comes with the kit is the DA L and has a plastic mount.
This is regarded as one of the best cheap-o entry level lens for general shooting. Lens works well. No obvious visible wear that I can see. Pretty sharp all purpose lens. Lens is fungus and haze free.
No lens hood included.
Sold my K7 body and now my 5 lenses (FA 35mm f/2.0, FA 50mm f/1.4, DA II 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED and AF-540 FGZ flash).

I called calumet and they said they never heard of such a problem. He later asked me what sync speed I had my camera on.. I said 1/180. "Oh that's too fast.. the lights can only go up to 1/125. Switch it to Manual and set a slower shutter". It didn't sound right to me since I heard of guys using faster shutters than that. When I got home from work I tried his suggestion with no success.
Yesterday I called Pentax and the tech said he had heard of the issue. And he said it he believed it to be the issue with polarity needing reversal. He didn't have technical details but that was what he had heard. I surely thought this was it! A few guys mentioned it so it MUST be true. Went to Radio shack to source the parts and built my own 1/8" mono polarity reversing patch cable. Got home to test it this morning.... drum roll... nothing.
So I'm back to square one. The only thing left to try is wait a week for my friend with his K7 to test with mine. Otherwise it goes back to Pentax (again). Last time I was without camera for 5 weeks.

Wheatfield: I thought the k-7 manual cautioned against having the polarity of the cord swapped out (no negative polarity inner pin). Won't I fry something by doing that?
I hear people talk about high voltages from old flash units damaging newer DSLR.. Am I correct to say assume those issues are isolated to hotshoe flash units? Not something connect to my PC sync?

So I bought a pair of Genesis 400 watt lights from Calumet photo to use with my K7. Unfortunately I can only trigger the first shot when I'm tethered to my K7's PC sync socket. I wait for the flash to recharge and when I depress the shutter again for another shot. Nothing fires.
I'm pretty sure it's not the new flash units. As I have tried both with the same results. The test button on the flash unit triggers the flash just fine. The pop up flash from my K7 will also trigger the lights repeatedly.
Any thoughts?
I just bought a set of the Yong Nuo RF-602 to trigger off the hotshoe (in both the Pentax/canon and Nikon versions) but they will take about 2 weeks to get here.
Pls help. TIA.

Yeah for $13 bucks I couldn't turn it down. The fit and finish was very good. It was 99% identical when I compared the 2 side by side. The seams had a slightly different finish because it kinda hard to mimic the plastic completely. Absolutely no problems going in my grip or the body. Some things I will never get aftermarket from china (like a sealed grip or lenses). Other things like batteries are a fairly safe bet. Isn't the OEM battery from China?

Any review on the dual split screens yet? I'm anxious to buy one if it fits the K20D properly. I had one from Jinfinance for my Samsung GX-1L which worked out well. Curious if these work well without shims.

Picked one up from there thanks.. hopefully the cashback gets processed without issues.. $130 bucks is a lot of dough.
Has anyone had problems paying for a Bing cashback item via Google checkout?
Don't forget to get the 2 year extended warranty from Amazon.com (via Adorama) for $10

The only problem with the K20D via eBay would be the ability to return it if you didn't like it for whatever reason. If Bing brings back the cashback to 14% then it would be the better deal.. but at 10% it's not as hot.
Right now BuyDig.com has the camera body for $609 plus it includes the additional 2 year warranty + a crappy 4 gig card. There is a Bing cashback of 6%. Which comes out to $572.
ALSO the price of the Samsung GX-20 WITH 18-55mm Lens is down on Amazon.com to $677. Basically the same camera but there's a couple of thing you don't get
1) the PEF (smaller) file format.
2) You don't get the extended dynamic range.
3) The K20D battery grip requires some modification to work.
The 1.03 firmware was just released by Samsung which makes everything on par with each other. I did a couple of test shots with both the GX-20 and the K20D and I felt the GX-20 produced nicer colors..
I originally had K20D on the way but I refused shipment because of a screw up.. now I'm curious about the K2000/Km sucessor. It's already late August. I could wait 2 more months.
Just things to consider..

Sadly no. Some russian guy brought his whole family to sign up for the raffle at one of them (which is how he won). And the reason I have the K20D on order right now :)
Think about it though.. 20:1 odds or in some cases 10:1. You couldn't get those odds in Vegas.

Thanks everyone. Yes the K20D will be my most significant upgrade. Funny thing it is almost $200 cheaper than my Sony from 9 years ago and it'll run laps around it. I hope to be taking lots of actions shots during fires (not wishing fire on anyone of course). My dept has the D3 so I'll shoot with that camera for night time operations but I'll be carrying my personal camera to see how it holds up in wet conditions. I bet I could give the D3 a run for its money.
I'm also very excited to see that there is someone out there working on a hacked firmware for the K20D. I'd love to see what the limits the K20D can be pushed beyond what Pentax intended LOL.

Hi This is Tony from NYC. Sorry I guess my forum netiquette isn't the greatest. I've already posted about 10 times or so already. :) I'm an beginner shutterbug. I've had digital cameras going back to 2000 but I got my first Samsung DSLR earlier this year when an online store was clearancing them out. I was shocked by how good the photos came out. The IQ was night and day and I have since gotten hooked to Pentax products after amassing a couple of cheap (but good lenses).
Sony DSC-S75
Canon S400 (in pieces)
Sony DSC-W5 (broken LCD)
Kodak C875
Samsung GX-1L (sold)
Pentax K20D (being delivered)
I'm looking forward to seeing what my new camera can do for me. I'm hoping to hook up with other fellow NYC Tristate area Pentaxians and exchange ideas.

The Good:
It's was nice and intimate. I got a good chance to play with all their really good lenses.. as opposed to the one B&H stuck on theirs that's tethered to an antitheft cable. Everyone was very good at answering the questions along the way. As far as odds of winning? They were REALLY REALLY good.
The Bad:
Yeah I would have to agree more stops spread along the route. More publicity about the whole event. I know other people that showed up to the other ones and there were as few as 10 people at one of them. 20 at some but no more than that. Let's say there were in fact 20 at each of the 15 sessions in various cities. That comes out to about 300 attendees giving out 15 K7 cameras (lets just say it's costing them $1000) = $15,000 equipment + cost of staff/photo pros + renting the exhibit space + hotel rooms.. I'm going to guess this road show cost them no less than $40-50k (and to reach 300 people?). The schwag was pretty cheezy like lens wipes and pens. I might've been swayed to getting the K7 had there been a $$ off coupon incentive for attending. If your bread an butter is your pentax gear then its a no brainer. The K7 is the way to go. But due to tighter budget crunching I ended up getting the cheaper K20D because there was nothing I as an amateur need from the camera to justify 2x the cost. Maybe one day in the future when the price dips well under $1000.
I'm sorry but I'm used to attending CES type shows where there are thousands of people. These were mostly all Pentaxians.. so it's kinda preaching to the choir. Hey all is not lost.. we have 15 new K7 owners that will be preaching the Pentax gospel. :)

How many people had shown up to that stop? NYC was surprisingly low. Very nice people at Pentax. Lots of lenses to play with. I wish they sold the clear SLR as an optional item hehe.
BTW I jumped on an the K20D after much thought today. I wasn't going to be needing most of the features as I'm still learning and I think my money is better spent on glass and accessories.

The turn out for NYC was pretty small. Considering it was New York F'in city the turn outs for each of the events was only around 10-25 people for each event. The viral marketing campaign somehow failed. It's nice of them to give away the K7 at every gathering. But I think for everyone who attended, spent almost 2 hours and didn't win the k7 at the event they should've gotten a booby prize to entice K7 sales. Like $50 off this or $100 off the camera or their new WR lens. Or have something worked out with a local camera shop.
Look. Let's be honest. Pentax just needs to get out there at this point. It's nice that the K7 has afforded them some media spotlight. But the Canon and Nikon juggernauts will steamroll them when their new D300s (and whatever the canon's new latest and greatest).
Pentax mainstream advertising doesn't exist AFAIK. I'm not a marketing person but I imagine the point of viral marketing (which is what the called Hotel billboard said) is to promote your product by word of mouth to create buzz. You only do that when people on the street carry around and use your product. We are your loyal foot soldiers talking up people on the street, telling P&S converts why they should choose the Pentax product over the sonys, nikons and canons. Advertising in some magazine alone will only get you so far.
It also was kinda weird there was no real demo of the video capabilities on the first day and they were showing off the in-camera digital filters like watercolor effects and stuff.

ATP Promax has a 32GB SDHC card for a little over $90 bucks (16GB for about $42) at mydigitaldiscount*. I can't say that I've tried it myself but the reviews of their smaller versions are right up there with Extreme III 20/MBs edition. They are also water proof and made to withstand harsh environments. I'm pretty certain the K7 doesn't really exceed 20MB/s transfers.
I'm contemplating the 32GB if I get the K7 for the video and larger RAW files. If I end up with the K2000 then I'll still with the 8GB Sandisk I have.
*I don't work for mydigitaldiscount. Just a fellow shooter passing along info.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up on the Bing Cashback. I'll hold off on any big purchases.. Do you know if it applies to Ebay too?
regarding the K2000 kit, it was actually $420 ($419.99) for a while so technically it is the lowest price at $415
