Quick question with regards to CIF.

Has anyone managed to get it to work with a rapidly moving object?

Since reading this I have tested mine. Shooting into the mirror Both the remote flash, Pentax AF360 fgz and the pop up flash are illuminating.

btw what is the difference in Menu 31 flash as Master or Controller?

I've tried both.

JP. I'd checked yours out. well worth a look.

I must admit out in the field I often shoot say ISO 1250 and underexpose by a stop or more and bring it back in PP.

I think the other thing this shot shows is how good the SR is.

From my exif data: shutter speed was 1/13th of Sec.
focal length 153mm!!

Quick test shot @ ISO 3200 on my K7. Don't usually use an ISO this high but this seems to look acceptable.

With my K10d I had times when at floodlit football (soccer) matches where I could not get any usable images.

With the K7 I am getting very nice images of the action under floodlights. Loving the K7. It is awesome.

I value AF more than I realized...

As I shoot alot of sports I use AF alot. However I have shot football (soccer) matches entirely with Manual Focus and got some great shots. It is blinking hard work though.

I'm not sure whether I miss more than the camera does, the K10d isn't quick for AF especially with the Pentax 60-250 f4. However I hope to get a K7 soon. That may be a tad quicker ;)

@ Arpe

Would it be psooible for you to tell us how you feel the K7 performs better than the K20 or indeed K10d. I'm an avids sports photographer and need lots of reasons to get one or my Mrs will never give in.

Thanks

It is purely for kudos. Photos are on the whole excellent that are on there. Being an official Pentax site adds to the kudos.

I hope to get some in, and will be showing off to everyone I can when I do so.

Dan, I first heard about PPG from this site when I signed up. First submission was rejected. I've got two that are currently awaiting acceptance.

Hopefully I'll get some in eventually. Told a mate about the site straight away. He submitted 2 pictures and had one accepted first time.

This is his pic.

My photography challenge is to pursuade my wife that the K7 is essential. Somehow I can't see that happening.

I'm looking forward to getting back into sports again, after a break due to exam revision. I would really like to get better at landscapes though. Mine are usually lacking something.

If you haven't got a blower get one. I've got one and an arctic butterfly I use these for cleaning.

I'm going through Chester tomorrow, I've got half an hour between train connections. So if you can be about at 4ish I can run through it with you if you like.

Dust spots.

Try to clean with a blower first if you have one.

This does tend to shift most things.

Not bad for a first attempt.

For me the 3rd shot is by far the best. I think you need to try and get tighter in general. Though a wider angle lens can help with atmos shots.

The background however is truely aweful. Surely you could have had the Best Western Hotel behind you. Also it looks to me that in some of the shots the focus is on the building in the background rather than the action.

You should shoot with as wide open an aperture as possible f2.8 f4 would help. Maybe also manual focus onto the court would be better than using AF. If you are a little off with AF you can instead focus on the background as it appears you have for some shots.

As I said, not bad for a first attempt.

Nice shots.

Maybe you could also get a shot of yourself leaning on something a photoshop it onto the F40. Not easy to do I know but wouldn't it be cool.

right or left eyed?

I don't close my eyes either. But I can see through the viewfinder with my left and just my hand with my right. If I could use my right eye in the viewfinder I could also track the play at the same time. which would be useful.

However I'll have to just keep doing it how I do.

Live view isn't really practical for sports. However I can see how it could help.

I seem to be getting good results so I can't be doing it too wrong.

right or left eyed?

My left eye is very much more dominant than my right eye. So much so that when I try to use my right eye to look through the view-finder I can't really see anything. So I use my left eye as this is more natural for me.

So what?

Well I shoot a lot of sport and like this I can only see what is happening through the view finder. The view of my right eye is obscured by my right hand. This does make following the play difficult.

Also I'm colourblind but that's another story. (Post-processing is kept to a minimum, white balances not adjusted from the presets)

Do other people have similar problems? What do you do to get round it?

Burst and the Great Sports Debate

Well I must be strange because I mainly shoot sport with my pentax gear. OK I may miss some shots but I am more than happy with the pefromance of my K10d. The times it lets me down is under floodlights. Hopefully the K7 will be much much better for this.

Then again, I am not going to be getting one for some time yet.

Also I shoot football (soccer) and hockey (field not ice) and they are possibly 2 of the most unpredictable games. Hockey is so quick and that ball is so small it can be really difficult. For me a fps of 3 means if I hit the shutter .2 sec too early and shoot burst I've still missed the shot in the next frame. It really is just fractions of a second we are talking about. It's even less that that between getting a shot of a header with the ball compressed on the players head and the ball not being in the frame. I suppose if I had a quicker fps rate I'd use it but I still think anticipation is the key.

Burst and the Great Sports Debate

Following this to its logical conclusion and sports photography will end as we know it sooner rather than later. When the quality of a still frame from a video shot on a DSLR gets to be sufficient for publication then still sports photography will be no more.

After all if you are shooting at 60/100 fps then you really aren't going to miss anything.

OK there is some luck involved but doesn't a higher frame rate on a camera take some of the skill out of it?
