The nikon gps unit for my d600 costs $300 - and does nothing but gps functionality. So, a gps unit with the astro tracking functionality for $199 is comparatively a spectacular deal.

Don't be intimidated - I did 2 of them last year and received both rebates without issue within 3 weeks (think it was 2 to be honest - very fast either way). You can even pre-register all of the documentation online to speed up the process.

Running two systems?

Well, there isn't much point in doubling up on the basic kit/must have lenses (which you've got covered), so the real question is what kind of photography are you enjoying, and what lenses will enhance that down the road? Pentax is great for nature photography, but not specifically wildlife due to limited available long telephoto options (and what is available in K mount is often expensive due to rarity, and also likely used and not available new). That is just one example though, and there are of course areas where Pentax excels too. So, what do you enjoy shooting?!

There is zero evidence, beyond speculation, that a Pentax ff camera is in the works. As with every new release, the k-3 proved to be just another aps-c surrounded by rumor and speculation. What on earth would lead you to believe otherwise after so many years?

Tamron Adaptal II SP 300 F2.8 ( 60B )

An in person sale with the 1.4x teleconverter - $700 would be a max value, that is assuming a couple of things:

1 - the lens has the Tamron 112mm UV filter (otherwise I would take $50 off at least for that).

2 - that is has the small 43mm clear filter insert and accompanying filter (no reason it shouldn't) - this is a slide out piece near the lens mount.

3 - that the Adaptall adapter is the type that pass acts as an A series Pentax lens and passes aperture info between lens and camera (I would value that at $80-100 which is what you'd realistically pay to get one).

Table Top Tripod Recommendation

Agreed with rbefly, get the manfrotto - best bang for the buck on table top tripods. Rbefly, the 709b has the mini ballhead that you might be referring to? It is $43 on amazon, here:

manfrotto 709b

Edit for OP - I checked out the 4 you listed. The tt-100 essentially looks like the manfrotto i linked to...I'd get the manfrotto just to ensure you are getting a solid product, never heard of oden. The 2nd two you listed are like a sail mast in the wind - your camera will vibrate and likely fall over quite easily so i'd skip those in a heartbeat. The last velbon would probably be solid enough, but those kind of heads (pan/tilt) are more for video and can be quite annoying to use over a simple ballhead. Go for your first option or the 709b I linked to.

Ya know, if ever I saw an obscure indicator that a Pentax FF camera were coming, the release of this Sigma FF coverage lens so quickly in K mount is the best one I have seen.

Given that Sigma regularly stiffs Pentax users by not producing FF oriented lenses in K mount, I'm frankly surprised to see it (and this quickly).

I can easily recommend Feisol, especially with that budget. I owned a gitzo series 2 basalt previously, and my feisol 3471 is just as good build quality. The 3371/3471 and 3372/3472 series largest legs are 37mm diameter - the same as gitzo series 5 legs. I opted for the 3471 with 4 leg sections. While more leg sections is usually less stable, the 4th section on the 3471 is thicker than the thickest section of my series 2 basalt legs. The 71 vs 72 series are 5lbs vs 4lbs weight. I don't find the 5lbs too taxing, the large leg sections are well padded for carrying, and of course it came with a bag as well. the USD price between the 71 and 72 series is about $320 vs $520 - 1lb wasn't enough to justify the additional expense for me though. It looks as though feisol europe only carries the newer rapid twist locks and the 3371/3471 run $329 euros (FEISOL EUROPE - Carbon Tripods, Monopods, Ballheads)

Onto a ballhead, I also readily recommend photoclam ballheads. It is a great build (i've had mine for 3-4 years now and it works as good as new). Given the camera weight I would go for at least a pc-40n (40mm ball) size. you can find them on ebay from South Korean sellers (they are made there) for around $230 USD shipped. The next size up is the pc-44n but those approach $300usd.

edit: BTW very smart move deciding to spend a little more money on the right setup the first time around, given you know exactly what you are looking for! If you held to $250 euros it would likely end up costing more $ down the road. I am 100% satisfied with the two recommendations I've given, otherwise I wouldn't offer them up - $500 is still a lot of money!

One other thing - I haven't used the feisol ballheads, but others have spoken well of them - looks like they have a couple at $150 euros that have a 50mm ball which might be beneficial - the 645 is pretty big even without lenses. I don't know if the feisol clamp is arca compatible too - the arca plates do add another expense to the equation!

For me that is the case sadly!

Thing is too, what is the new lens line-up going to look like for it? The limiteds are amazing, and I would absolutely love to use my 43mm on it, but if the generally frugal Pentax users think prices are high now, the used lens market will skyrocket if a FF body comes out. Pricing for used/no longer made film era lenses (not talking the limiteds here) are already pretty high, and availability is also relatively scarce, and that is with people using them only on aps-c. Any FF buyers/upgraders will immediately begin seeking out those scarce lenses.

Also, without it even being announced there have already been a few posts in here about waiting for the body price to come down before they buy - until that sort of mentality is gone the FF body is going to be a tough sell for Pentax. Then you get into 3rd party support, which already isn't stellar and would likely be another couple of years before K mount releases of existing sigma and tamron lenses (mainly sigma I guess), not to mention tokina's very well reviewed Fx lenses.

I wish it would have come sooner, or at least be announced, officially, from the start. I absolutely love my remaining Pentax lenses and will never part with them, but with the exception of my 43mm there is no draw with the 15mm or 50-135mm to FF for me.

With all of that said I can't believe the posts in here hoping that a FF Pentax body would be able to compete with canikon spec-wise - Pentax makes amazingly user friendly pro-spec'd bodies already - the control they already offer in the K-5/ii/iis is very well thought out and easy to grow accustomed to, there is no reason to expect that a FF body would be any less (and likely quite better), and spec'd above the competitors in the price range Pentax chooses to compete.

I assume Pentax will make a body as robust as the K-5 build (likely slightly larger - a throwback to the k10/20 I would absolutely love to see, but I always loved that build and it was probably larger than necessary), and that they will be able to tweak whatever sensor they use to a greater extent than Nikon or Sony (Pentax always pulls the most out of a given sensor, that is pretty much a given in my mind). Great body, great sensor and pair it with some of the goodies that the other manufacturers are using such as gps, wifi (think tethered phone/tablet apps) - some people will frown upon that stuff, but it needs to be in there to compete. price it competitively around the d600 and 6d and Pentax will have a winner, no question.

If you read through you'd see that after setting the camera to M mode and setting the aperture ring to your desired setting, it only takes a press of the green button to get proper metering? Takes a split-second.

I would think the af360fgz is still going to be your best bet used - should be available under $150 in good condition. Might want to wait a little, as this flash is being replaced so there might be more used ones on the market from those upgrading.

I think you're starting to talk in the 'meta-physical' knock-off realm! When Benro is probably about 4th or 5th down the line of arca knock-offs, I think we can just stop calling them knock-offs! Not to mention their own website indicates Benro is located in China...now the Chinese are knocking off the Chinese, what has this world come to!

I have a toshiba thrive (10 inch, last gen model but they updated it to android ice cream sandwich). Full sized USB (standard operating like on a PC), full sized SD slot, full sized HDMI out - if you want to view and cull your daily images while travelling it would work perfectly. While it is a 10 inch model, it is a 16:9 screen size so relatively tall but still not too wide or cumbersome. They routinely come up for sale on the daily deal type websites for around $200-220 (or less)

Anyone using a Camera Backpack with a Tamron Adaptall 300mm F2.8

Here is a crude cell phone snap of the dakine sequence. K-5 and tamron 300mm up the middle, 50-135mm in pouch on the bottom and the lens with the vivitar cap is a tokina 28-70mm f2.8, 2 slots left for a body and flash, or there would be room to fit the 50-135 with the K-5 attached with some reworking of the dividers (lots of velcro on the bottom/sides of the bag allow pretty free divider movement). The hood is the only no-go, but there are plenty of external straps that it could be leashed to. Also lots of top pocket room for a few essentials. They do seem to replace/restyle the bag annually so there are usually close-outs to be found, I paid less than $100 for mine used maybe 2 years ago.

Also, a couple other nice things about the sequence are that the photo portion opens on the inside towards your back, so can only be accessed when removed from your back (good for security), it does have a built-in rain cover, and the entire camera gear storage area can be completely removed and used as an over-the-shoulder messenger style pack. The part of the pack that is against your back is also semi-rigid/firm, so that no matter what is going on with your photo gear in there, so long as you can close it, it will be a smooth surface without any odd bumps.

I'm gonna call BS on this point and your perspective. You're coming off as half PO'd and half jealous. I'll ask you a simple question. If everyone had universal, government paid healthcare, how exactly would it be abused? If everyone were able to freely get the care they needed, and were cared for, what would be left to abuse in this system?

Fraud is criminal, criminals get caught in the end but there is nothing you can do about it until a criminal is caught. The only waste I see in the current private system is the fat unnecessary payments to executives. And again, if everyone is given the care they need, where is there room left for abuse?

That is why I call BS on your comments. Being an American who was born a Canadian, I can say with an outside perspective, that the US healthcare system sucked before Obamacare, and still sucks because Obamacare isn't nearly enough.

How do Canadians view Gun Laws

You realize you look a little, to put it lightly, misinformed, by posting this after your first post quoting the crime rates of Calgary, right? What constitutes a metro area for you, since Jacksonville is a population of 800,000 and Calgary over 1 million? Jacksonville might be a big seaport, but do you think Calgary is any less a major cross-country (not to mention international) transportation hub? Then you state hardly any of Jacksonville's crimes were gun related. So it seems to me your answer to make Jacksonville look more like Calgary on the criminal map would be to allow everyone to carry a gun around? When Calgary has far less crime and it is against the law to carry a gun around? Ok, that is logical...

Who would trust that much valuable weight to mdf shelving?

direct K-5 successor?

Absolutely agree at current prices the K-5 is a no-brainer - it still holds up to the most current aps-c cameras despite being almost 2 years old now (4 months shy anyway).

Regarding your last point though, when a smaller manufacturer like pentax announces a camera body has been discontinued, the truth is it would have been out of production for some time. If a replacement comes late fall, the K-5 is likely already done being produced and the new camera rolling down the line - yet it would probably be into Spring before it is officially discontinued, it has been like that forever! While I don't see replacing my K-5 with its successor at this point, I do hope they produce a winner and that they don't fall into the recent traps of not being able to fulfill new orders that other companies seem to be falling into (whether deliberately or innocently who knows!).
