Hello Asama
I was going to Sheridian College in 1980 taking a Art based course and the cameras used at the school where the Pentax K-1000. I learned the basics of picture taking from this camera design and it has helped out greatlly when using other camera types. I can get the best out of even a basic point and shoot camera by using it in Progam mode and use the exposure over-ride to control exporsures better. It is not total manual control but having he understanding of what is going is helpful.
I hve my older SMC lenses and I like the feel of the better but I have gotten to like the way things are being done on modern designs. I feel that although the methods of creating an image do change you still end up with he same basic result. There are methods like HDR hat can really help out creating nice looking in difficult lighting conditions. This could be done years ago in the darkroom but the use of the computer has made this process easier to get now-adays.
I bought a Pentax K-m in 2009 and liked its basic, simple design. It has only picture taking mode, no video at all. Ithink that you well find that most curent customs are expecting some of the features you listed as unneeded. I think that a lot of the that are getting into picture taking really are not learning the basics like you or I did. Only a small percentage of people are welling to put the time out for this now. Anyways, welcome to the forum!

I started out using a Pentax K-1000 in college and liked the design. I have always used Pentax since as far as SLR cameras go. Seeing that I had a number of K mount lenses from my film days, the D-slr in Pentax was the way to go. It is great to use 25 year old lenses on a newer digital camera body.

It sounds like an interesting camera but like most digital cameras, they loss there value fast. It would be great to see it up and running to see the picture quality. I like to get older digital cameras to see the some design details on them and use them if they work!

I got an early Christmas present. It is a DIGIpower battery charger from The Source in Strathroy, ON. today. Needless to say, the camera powered up with no problem and it appears to be in good working order. Once the battery is fully charged I will start to put the camera through some test pictures to see just how well it works. It will be nice to have another Pentax in my fleet of cameras! There is an posteted requesting a free charged for the camera that will be taken down now.

As long as one can find the materials to get a camera working it is not old. Cameras like the old Brownie series that use either 616 or 620 film are now old due to fact that the is film no longer being made. I bought a Mavica MVC-FD71 that is still used. It is old in terms image quality but the basics how the image is created is the same. It creates an interesting image look.

Hello all
My girlfriend went to garage ale and picked up number of used cameras. One was a Pentax Program Plus that works great once the batteries were replaced. The other Pentax camera is a Optio WPi compact point and shoot model. I was wondering how good it is. I need a battery charger to get it running. Ho well does the image sensor hold up. I have seen some older digital cameras image sensor blow out and had a Fuji S5000 do this as well after only 10,000 exposures. Also how long does the battery last before wears out.
I like the feel his Pentax and have hopes of it giving good results. Any feed back would be welcome! BTW it only cost $1.00!:)

I too was concerned with the mixed specs of the Df. I found the top plate a bit too busy. The orginal film cameras had a cleaner feel to them. I find simple designs nicer to use. The K3 is a nicer camera in many ways. I think that with Pentax having the designs they have in place (the Q series, the nice full fange of Dslrs, and the 645D) makes for complete full line-up. I own the K-m and althought it lacks some of the refinements of the newer models it works well for what I do. I like the simple design set-up and it has a great feel to it. I like the picture of the "K1000D" above. Very funny!
I think there is a greater fear that the smart phone market is taking over the camera only design in sales for now aways. Even the sale of Dslr's is being affected.

I noted that Nikon introduced the Df retro Dslr. Seeing that Nikon designed a classic looking FF camera, would it be nice to see Pentax do something in the same line. It was talked about in past posts about a K1000D described many of the features included featured in th new Nikon model. I do not know just how well it will do but the pre sales are looking good. It will be interesting see how the the younger crowd that never really grew up with the film version of the camera design. The price is on the high side and will interesting how long it will be produced for. For someone in their early fifties, it is nice to see a camera that looks like the good old days. Hopefully Pentax will look into this design route as an option for some futue model.

The Pentax K50 is a great tool. As with all the other replies, pick out the mode you feel best it just try taking pictures subject matter you like. As time goes on, read some books about things you like experiment with the camera in different modes. There are days that even the most creative minds have dry spells. The cameras I use range from my simple cell phone camera to the Pentax K-m. It is surprising how a little bright spot in the day (or night time) can help get you into seeing a subject in a creative way!

I thought something like this would be the case. I guess I am just getting to think a bit about the old film days and how I used to work in the darkroom. In saying this it would be nice to see a simple D-slr like the K1000 film camera but the market is simply not there. I still like the fact that with any current Pentax camera's, the old glass can STILL be used on them! As far as modes go, simply put your current camera into manual mode and do the work for creating yourself. I really still enjoy using my K-m even though the camera is dated in many ways. Just have fun with whatever camera you use!

It would be nice to see base model Dslr come out as well. I some threads on the K1000D from 2008 and that was the time the Pentax K-m came out.It be nice to see digital version of the K1000 anyways that could modeled after some of the later P series cameras like the P3/P30 model. It could be based on the K-m platfom minus the pre-programmed modes but given a silver top plate for the older retro look. The shutter speeds could be placed on the top dial just like the K1000 film camera. I would like to see he return of the open aperture metering ring allowing the older series lenses (M series, screw mount wih adaptor ring etc) and use some form of digital equal to the older needle metering system (LCD needle). Seeing that the K-m was already made, there could not be the need for a K1000d type today. The K500 fills the need in this market already. A K1000D could be a stripped down version the K500 model with the changes mentioned above.

It nice to hear that Pentax will be at Walmart but the way Walmart deals with companies in general can not be that great at times. I just hope the deal with Walmart does not hurt Pentax either.

Hello everyone,
Has anyone tried doing a 24 hour picture taking essay? After doing a 365 project, I would like take a crack at doing a 24 hour picture essay. This would something along the lines of a day in the life of series. I am aiming at doing this mid spring/ early summer. This has been on my mind for a while now but going ahead with it will be far better then talk. I still need to story board it out a bit to have some form of plan to go by, even if on the day I do start it up things go on a plan B.
I would like to hear from others that have tried this and hear how their project worked out.

I think many people using D-slr only camera could learn something by going to a simpler camera. It is not just yourself. I think that the forum had a contest using simple point and shot cameras a while back. There was a bit of talk about what cameras could and could not be used. This would be a great place to showcase the use of the creative simple camera.

The pros of using older lenses that in some cases are better then newer ones with the built-in SR is a big plus. It is sad that there is no news to date on replacement D-slr models. The mirrorless market is growing and could have an effect in the D-slr market place. I am using a Fuji S1500 with a EVF/ LCD viewing system. The system allows one to see any colour correction in the view finder. The D-slr with the mirror is in some ways prefered since the camera can be used with no power to see through the view finder.
Hopefully Ricoh will be doing something soon with the Pentax side of things. Otherwise I could see newer customers jumping ship to other brands. The current owners like myself will be using Pentax as long the cameras being used are working. The design of the cameras is something I like so far. I hope they do not do any major changes that will put off existing users.

Nice looking flash work. It is nice to get a handle on creative flash work. It opens up the world to save some picture taking situations and make them work better then other methods when not using flash.

The use of M is the best way to solve your problem. You can do a number of lighting options at this point. Setting the camera to 1/180th is first thing that can be done. I like to use lower shutter speeds at times so the background light will mix in a bit with the flash. At this point, you run into some of the problems you are having now but you are in control of the camera at this point. I shot a picture for a newspaper story years ago that used pushed film (Tri-X shot at 1600 ISO) and bounced flash to balance out a night time scene where the indoor and outdoor lighting had to come together. The exposure was 1/15th @ f2.8. In that case it worked well for me. This may not work in all picture taking situations.

It's funny what a working photogragher will use to get their pictures. I saw a Stratford newspaper reporter writer/ photogragher use a simple Fuji S700 bridge camera for their pictures while the other newspaper photogher from the other paper uses a lot of Nikon gear. Both create images that help tell a story and for the most part the images do the job. Once the pictures are printed in the newspapers you really can not tell for the most part what camera type was used.
Simply put, enjoy whatever camera you have and replace with one if needed to make you happy. Sometimes a cellphone camera may be the only one on hand to capture a image. Just try to get the best out of what you have. I read years ago about the pro using a simple camera as a test as to what they can do. In this case it was in a 1948/9 era photography book my dad had and I got my hands on to read. They used the example of using a simple browny box camera as compared to the higher end cameras of the day. The idea is the same, to work around the limitations of whatever simple camera has to offer. I own a number of these in digital form and test myself every once in a while. It makes a great way look at the basics of compostion etc.
I did this when doing a trip over to Europe in 2006. I did not feel like taking a expensive camera seeing I was by myself. A simple digital camera that I could carry around my neck worked out great. Working around the limitations of that camera helped me get simple effective pictures.

I was wondering the best way of getting best out of the custom color setting on the Pentax K-m. I have had the camera for two years and have never looked into this feature before. so I would like to get the best out of it. I have looked up on-line about this without the answers I would like to see. Any help from users of the K-m/ K2000 would be most welcome.

This is not a TV but the principal is the same. A one piece background and white reflectors help create nice clean hight lights and shadows. Given the size of the TV's you are working with, you are going to need a lot of working space create the set area. I would say at least a space that is 10' by 12' to help create a good working space. To help with the front flections, try using large black or white panal with a small hole in it to hide the reflections from the camera area. It helps with create nice highlights on reflective surfaces. You are going to need a very powerful light source to light the area. The general rule of thumb is light the area, not the object itself. Here is a number of sample pictures of model cars using this lighting model. |

After a lot of work, I managed get a lot of my older pictures edited and filed. It is interesting to see where I have been and where I am heading now. Old slides and slide mounted B&W negs have been digital transferred into computer files. Here are some samples of ones placed on Photobuckets. It is great to have acess to older material now. How many others have been doing the same thing? It is a lot of work but well worth the effort. All where taken with my ME-Super and various lenses that I still own and use on my K-m D-slr. Mostl images are from the mid 1980's in Brampton, Ontario area (but still Bramalea to many long time home owners).:p

A little trick I use is to meter off the palm of your hand. The tonal range if the skin on a white person is one stop lighter then 18% grey. It gives you a fast way of getting more accurate light levels in snowy conditions.
Now if we only had a snow in the area to worry about it. It is still only mid Jan. so winter still has a chance to some to south-western Ontario. There was a lot more snow in the area this time last year.

I am glad that you fixed the lens problem and are modifing the Ricoh mount fit the Pentax with no future problems. It is nice the pass on this tip others that may be facing the same problem. Once you modify the Ricoh lens mount, it opens up the number of lens that can be used on the Pentax camera bodies a lot!
