Pentax should take a page from its old partner Samsung

you'd be surprised how closely the NX1's image quality is compared to the FULL FRAME D810's Sony sensor. the difference between the two are at most is separated by 1/3 of a stop and sometimes by 1/2 of a stop, that's it. no major advantage from the FF D810 and I would not even touch the D810 because it is a terrible moire monster. among the APS-C sensors, the NX1's image quality takes the top spot easily and unrivaled as of the moment, considering it has maintained or better'ed the quality of lower MP cameras. even the latest Sony sensor in the A77 MKII bites the dust.

I would not take away where credit is due here. for the first time, Samsung really did great with the NX1 and it's sensor. no disrespect to Sony, but Samsung won this round without any doubt.

I don't think the Pentax user base is large enough for Samsung to invest in K mount. besides, if it was huge, they would have not have abandoned their partnership with Pentax. Samsung might have even bought Pentax. but I guess Samsung has other plans, and that it to create and sell their own product line after getting the much needed optical knowledge from Pentax. in comparison to Samsung and Pentax lens lineup, both systems are not far away from having the similar number of AF supported lenses (DA and FA, stars and limited). I don't really count the old FA lenses as they are far too scarce and only a lucky few of them owners out there.so if Pentax users really want to use their lenses on the Samsung camera, they can always use an adaptor as the NX cameras to support the K-mount lenses, just not electronically.

I'm not to sure about the number of Samsung camera owners versus Pentax camera owners, but the sales trend for the past few years and from that stats, show significant number of Samsung camera sales versus Pentax camera sales despite Pentax having a more established user base.

Samsung have the blueprints or partial rights to it on how to make Pentax quality lenses due to the partnership with Pentax more than a decade ago and have close relations with Schneider-K which is pretty much Samsung lenses. I don't think Samsung would need a redundancy with rebadged lens with similar optics or something that is of previous design than their improved cheaper Samsung counterparts. I heard that their premium zoom lenses are top quality and from the pictures shown appear to be really high resolving sharp lenses. I think those are more attractive especially the F2 opening of the 16-50 and the 150mm reach and focus limiter of the telezoom. but ultimately, the news about the AF to be silent and blazing fast compared to Pentax SDM. so why would they keep K-mount?

I just been looking and reading some news and reviews about this Samsung camera and today, I have seen some remarkable images and videos. it seems like Samsung finally made one hell of camera. I am very tempted on getting one soon and if I weren't a bit short, I might have ordered one from Korea by now. or anywhere it is available. I am not sure when or if they have some stocks from Henry's or anywhere in Canada. maybe at BestBuy or Futureshop perhaps?

I would take the DXO ranking with a grain of salt as it is also confusing. the funny thing about their lens scoring is how the same lens seems to be different on a different camera. they rank high on some and low on some.

if I were you, I would not base the lens' performance capacity on such technical websites which do not show or see what you are actually getting on the image. judge the lens on the actual pictures that it produces rather than numbers that does not explain what it meant or see what it really is. I think you can see a lot of pictures on the web taken with the Samsung 85. if those pictures don't impress you at all, I don't know what kind of good you are after.

on the otherhand, the Samsung 85mm could be the same blueprint of the Pentax A* 85mm by virtue of collaboration between Samsung and Pentax in the past. and I think most of the lenses are influenced by Pentax.

I'm not sure what tests you are looking at, but the NX1 certainly looks better. although lens also plays a part in making the results even better, it also shows the resolution capability of the camera and lens combo. normally a higher mp sensor would demand a really remarkable lens to resolve that much detail but it seems the new BSI architecture played a role in keeping the IQ at great level. lens should not impact how the IQ look at High ISO.

from the test, it reads they applied the best sharpening from all cameras and the best lenses so I don't think there is a conspiracy to make the Sony A77 II look bad. even more so with the NX lens which showed a weak corner. maybe 24mm would have done better for cropped sensor cameras. but that would also increase the performance of what is already the existing IQ of both lenses. usually Sony jpegs are better than what NX cameras can produce, so I don't buy the jpeg setting difference also.

considering these are only beta samples from the NX, that is already something worth considering about, especially with the IQ looking good.

I'm not sure if those streaks are part of the image or shooting stars but if this was long exposure, the other stars should have showed similar effect of that of star trails via long exposure. this to me looks more like rare meteor trails. I also looked at the left image particularly the water/lake which seems to be of similar calmness as the one on the left.

how good is it? I haven't bought that lens yet because it's out of my budget but I'm looking to get one for $700.

question is, did you stop when I asked? ANSWER : NO !

instead, you ignored and dodged my plea and make turn it to me. and you continued on because you can't accept that someone said that you are "mistaken" and some of your statement are "truly inaccurate". now that's mature.

you made this a long thread about yourself. go on, check for yourself just how many posts you made on this thread alone. the proof is in the pudding. I asked you nicely but it is apparent that you are incapable of any intellectual and mature discussion and can't accept when you are mistaken.

but don't worry, I will stop here because you asked me too and because unlike you, personal ego is not important and does not make me better nor worth fighting for. and I'm glad on knowing a lot about your "good" personality. I would give you a parting gift so that you would finally stop if you are mature enough to stop. you are absolutely right and never wrong. you know everything and every statement you make is infallible and not open to debate. I will no longer question your superior intellect. thank you and have a nice day.

you meant f1:2 right? IQ are great. the f2 is compact and I love the creamy DOF rendering. great for B and W photography and very vivid and lively colors. very sharp.

the only weakness the f2 has is the color blooming and occasional fringing at wide apertures. the blooming could be annoying and sometimes pleasing depending on what you shoot. the blooming effect is great for Black and White. to avoid blooming in color, stop down to f5.6 or f8. using the M85 is like shooting an old uncorrected lens which is amazing for portraiture and abstract work.

I have tried and used the NX before. I think it was 2010 or 2011 I think. I did have my bias against Samsung as a camera back then because it was an unknown brand. I considered the brand by accident. it was an nx100 that I bought for my wife as a gift. besides, a $300 camera + 2 lenses is a difficult deal to pass up. I never knew I would end up liking the camera and the brand that much. the sensor was very good and the build was surprising good as well. that ended me having two more cameras which are the NX200 and NX Galaxy which I again bought during a sale which each camera cost less than $500. I would say the camera is competitive in IQ, performance and build but far from perfect. the buffer speed of the NX200 and Galaxy is slow, especially with those huge raw files. jpeg however is a different story and doesn't compromise speed but the image quality is certainly it's weakness. the raw however are awesome. I had the NX200 converted to full spectrum use for extreme B/W and IR detail pictures. the lenses are mature in my opinion and are of excellent quality and up there with some of the best lens counterparts except probably the OTUS lenses. the lens' IQ perhaps is largely influenced by Pentax and Schneider design so it's not like they are building from scratch but just have to improve the design.

actually it 's a plea to you to discuss something "camera related" not brand related. besides, its the actual contents of your posts and easily identified. it doesn't take rocket science what you are trying to imply which contains inaccuracies.

I believe Samsung just started out to go mainstream with their nx at around 2009. not newly new, but fairly new nonetheless. for me, it takes about 10 years before certain product would reach their maturity. in fairness to Samsung, their cameras and sensor are competitively good and somehow there at the level of mainstream brands, but not at the top of the food chain.

---------- Post added 10-03-2014 at 07:09 AM ----------

once again, please stay on topic. besides, Apple is also guilty of such doing as well (remember the suicides in China?), so please spare the corporate morality debate. it holds no bearing on this thread.

please do stop. I agree that there is no need to debate on this as you can search it online whether your statements are indeed accurate and hopefully not motivated by brand loyalty as it obviously is showing. this is not an Apple Versus Samsung topic. reserve those useless debates elsewhere but not here. thank you.

thanks. I finally was able to blend my speakers harmoniously although I had to reset and do a couple of up and down adjustments to stress the center. I finally leveled my mains the same as the center at equal volume adjustments and seems that the CS1 just needed some break-in period. my mains (not the center) just practically adjusted after a few hours and uses. I have to agree that inorder to get the perfect balance to an HT system, it is advisable to have similar brands. I read the monitor class speakers compensate each other pretty well including newer generations. my wife appreciates the upgrade very much as the vocals are now the crispiest and clearest that she has heard without having to drive the volume that much. also loved the surround effect of the 3.1 system. all 3 speakers + the sub seem to have adjusted themselves to optimal result. movie watching now is much appreciable and enjoyable. clear and detailed without having to go loud and drive the neighbors nuts and don't have to tone it down. this would be nice especially Man of Steel just came out.

I just recently bought a center channel speaker to match my existing 2.1 system and run a 3.1 setup.

basically, my system now composed of Polk speakers and a Harman Kardon A/V receiver.

my Polks composed of T300 bookshelf mains, a PSW303 sub and the newly acquired CS1 Series 2 center. the mains and center have pretty similar specs and are boosted by my 6.1 capable H/K receiver ( running under NEO 6 audio 3 channel surround configuration). my receiver is capable of powering 40 watts per channel.

despite the mains and center being almost equally have similar specs, I find the center to be overwhelming or drown the mains and somehow found certain details are now missing due to the drowning and strong midrange although I haven't fully tested and configured the combo yet extensively since I only got them last night. the center is great especially the midrange. vocals are extremely crisp/clear and powerful which is great if you want to hear vocals dominantly. but it does so at the expense of my main sounding like weak supporting casts or assistants. my question is, would it be ideal for the mains to driven as loud as the center or adjusted slightly below enough to hear the missing details?

the same with the nx300. from what I heard and read everywhere, the camera has nothing but praises from reviews and users alike. although it doesn't look to be as a popular pick by most consumers just like Pentax, I think it's reputation is not because the company that made it paid off people to say good things about it. maybe they are doing it right by going small mirrorless compact with the APS-C sensor which Pentax hasn't done yet. the Pentax K-1 is mirrorless, but was a brick.

Audio Speakers for DAD

let me say that I'm so happy to be getting an early Fathers' Day present from my lovely wife seeing me getting frustrated for a couple of days, weeks and months looking for a budget speaker and finally convincing her thru my power of persuasion (begging).

so yesterday, I got the go signal and just like that I was off to Electro-Land and got a set of Polk Audio T300 (formerly known as Monitor 30's). I'm not sure if these were the same quality as the old Monitor 30's or did some revisions but so far so good. I got these on sale which played a role on my wife's permission and the other having a pity on me. I did some research about these and these speakers are difficult to find some info considering they were recently renamed and were discontinued for a bit a while now.

I bought these from advice of some of our good members here and I can't thank them enough for their help but it is indeed a task looking for one and not that easy. I was originally planning on purchasing a soundbar part of improving and at the same time downsizing our HDTV's sound system and freeing from clutters due to our small living room setup. but was persuaded into buying some HiFi speaker set instead although not that really space deterrent considering the 2 speakers were just 6x10x8 inches each. I made my decision on these basing on the overwhelming positive feedback and since the Wharfedale's which I were also considering were not that available nor easily to get from my location.

so I plug these directly to my existing 5.1 amplifier/receiver and replaced the other 4 satellites. I have now a 3.1 setup although I've been thinking about cutting the speaker wires on powered satellite speaker for an exclusive 2.1 setup since the weak satellite speaker could cause some problem at the higher volume output and is meddling with the sound staging in a certain way.

now about T300 speakers, I'd say they are great for my needs and somehow met my expectations, especially for the price that I paid for them which is a bargain. the sound produced were clean, clear, detailed and sharp. the distinction between sounds were recognizable especially on the higher end of the sound spectrum. but ultimately, I got what I was after which is voice clarity. the isolation of each distinct sound made it easier to hear the conversation even at lower volumes. instruments are now present or existing. I'd say voice clarity is just about excellent although I feel that there are better results. they do however give some real excellent clarity with higher frequency which makes them best served as rear speakers but not saying they can't do front or pseudo-center channel. the bass output is very good in my opinion and enough to give that brief or intermediate thump or punch. not too heavy that would disturb the neighbors or muddy the entire room with disturbing vibrating sounds. they can stand alone if you are after easy listening with moderate thump. but if you want that ground-shaking boom and thump, you'll need a subwoofer for it. the subwoofer I have for it is not excellent but does the job on certain levels. I guess that would be my next purchase and possibly a better amplifier. hoping for christmas to come soon.

as far as the boss is concerned, she pretty much appreciate the purchase now that she could enjoy easy listening clarity without pumping out the volume to annoying levels.

thanks. I was considering this one as well but I think I read something that is better than this for less. I forgot what it was since I was pretty much tired from reading a lot of the reviews. on the otherhand, basing from your experience, how was the clarity at small volume? does the sound have the tendency to blow up all of a sudden, any distortion or is it more consistent?

thank you all for giving some recommended brands. if it could help, you might want to recommend an specific model. as I said, space and cluttters are an issue, so I would need something that would take less space and less wirings to contend with. from what I read, the more recent soundbars are of good quality. if I got money to burn, I would have selected Bose despite the bad raps I'm hearing about them, but the Cinemate 1 SR did made an impression on my wife and I, except I can't afford it right now. so I'm looking for a cheaper (temporary) solution for the moment that would make movie or tv viewing much better for hearing the conversations. I hate it when the conversation gets drowned or you can't hear it. I have to increase my volume just to hear the conversation, not to mention the bad mixture of sound. noise is also an issue since we don't have good soundproofing in our new place which could disturb the neighbors. I have a good 5.1 Home theater system before but I can't use them due to incompatibility to our new HDTV, not to mention the cluttered cables which is really annoying except Sony.

I'll look into Toshiba as well and those other systems.
