Ah, I misunderstood. If it's a walkaround lens you're wanting then definitely the 16-85 - I'm a prime person and it has almost converted me to using zooms!

Awesome though the 16-85 is, wouldn't you perhaps be better with something like a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 (or even a Sigma 50-150 f2.8 if you aren't averse to eBay) if you're so heavily into portrait work?

The 16-85 is awesome. I'm a prime person (and bought the 16-85 in a kit with my K3 II only because I didn't have a WR lens) and it's converted me to using zooms for landscape work.
For an ultrawide I'd probably recommend one of the Sigmas (8-16mm or 10-20mm) over the 12-24. With the 16-85 (or 18-135) you'll get more mileage out of the extra width of those than the extra length of the 12-24 (especially since both of the standard zooms are at their best around the 24mm mark).
Well worth considering, but make sure you buy used from a retailer like B&H rather than off eBay / the marketplace here (and don't buy an old one) - the 16-50 and 50-135 had the worst of the SDM reliability problems, particularly when they were first released. For those two in particular you want the backup of being able to return / repair a bad copy.

Depending on which version of the 10-20 you're talking about you might want to make a decision soon: the older (and slower, but sharper) version is now discontinued and stores are selling off their last stocks of it.

I would definitely go for something waterproof (ie sealed), like the stuff you linked to, rather than just a rain cover. In a rainforest environment it's not just actual rainfall you have to worry about but also the humidity.

Kanarek does get quite a few covers with his Pentax gear, but your argument fails because he also has several other systems and his main one (on which he makes most of his living) is Nikon. He also seems to be the only photographer on earth with a reliable 16-50.
As for the original topic, I've gone for a NEX-6. The AF isn't necessarily any less likely to hunt or give up in low-light, but it is accurate. And when it does give up for whatever reason, I can use the auto-magnification and focus peaking to manually focus much easier than in an OVF. Need to get out and do some real shooting with it soon. As for lenses, the Sigma 30mm f2.8 is an awesome bit of glass particularly for £100, and the 19mm (though not as great in the corners) is still a good complement to it.

The 35mm f1.4 is supposedly coming to Pentax mount. Warehouse Express (one of the main Pentax dealers in the UK) are even taking pre-orders on them.

True, but with the size being similar why would anyone buy a K-01 over a K30 other than price? Both are SLR size cameras, they have identical mirrorless functions (CDAF, live view, video modes, focus peaking etc.), but the K30 also has weather sealing and the option to use the mirror and PDAF if the user desires.

Anything with SDM in it. Until there's a Microsoft/RROD-type mea culpa and 5+ year warranty on SDM failure, I'm not touching any of them.

From that source you posted:
At least in the UK, there's a limit on how many chest X-rays one can have per year for safety reasons. Carrying a radioactive Takumar for one day of shooting equals eight chest xrays. No thanks!
Edit: If of course the Camerapedia figures are wrong then so is my comparison. Still not buying :p

Only thing I'd really add to that is a fast lens for night use and more dimly lit interiors (catacombs in Rome, etc.). Remember that most museums, churches etc. don't allow flash photography, and even outdoors you're unlikely to have room to set up a tripod (particularly in Rome), so if I were in your position I'd definitely make a fast lens of some sort top of my list. Maybe the new Sigma 35 f1.4 if you could afford that and it's out in Pentax mount in time for your trip, which it might not be. Otherwise the Sigma 30 f1.4 apparently has a cashback deal of some sort at the moment in the US, so definitely pick up one of those if you aren't going for the 35.

Well I now have my ideal 15/35/70 Limited kit that I've wanted for a while (not yet had a chance to go out and shoot with the three yet though :( ). I'd love them all to be a stop faster, but then I wouldn't want them to be any bigger so I guess what I really want is new laws of physics :p As for any new lenses I'd like to see, maybe:
Zooms
The 17-70 but weather sealed and with DC instead of SDM focusing
The 50-135 with DC rather than SDM
Primes
Maybe a DA 10 f4.5 Limited?
Something like a 135 Limited if it were possible (I doubt it is, at least within 'limited' sizing)

The fact that a thread like this is necessary shows the biggest problem Ricoh have to solve: the SDM fiasco. Yes, other brands have particular lenses that have their problems (see lensrental's stories), but none of them have their entire premium line of lenses discredited because of poor quality focus motors.

Those particular lenses are overpriced in the used market because most of them break (or their SDM does anyway) before their users get round to selling them. So working ones are rare, and rare things people want are pricey :p

M-JPEG, as the name might suggest, basically just involves taking a JPEG image for every frame of the video. 25 two megapixel photos per second of video and you can see what the problem is. M-JPEG needs roughly 2-3x the storage spage of h264 video of equivalent quality, and was outdated five years ago.

It is. The K30 can take modern h264 video, whereas for reasons known only to themselves Pentax lumbered the K5 and the newer (than the K30) K5 II/IIs with M-JPEG 'video' so we can all party like it's 1999.

Except for focus peaking and h264 video. Of course neither of those are relevant to the bit depth of RAW files, but the former is relevant given the vast 'back catalogue' of K and M42 mount MF lenses, and the latter is relevant to anyone who has previously encountered M-JPEG video *shudders*

What about the new 24MP Sony? And no, I don't mean just for more megapixels. Although it initially had a pretty poor reputation, once it was out from behind Sony's silly translucent mirrors (in the Nikon D3200, and I think one of the recently-released NEXs) it offers higher resolution (for big prints, if nothing else) at performance at least equivalent to the Sony 16MP sensor being used in the K5, K01, K30 and now K5 II.

Because it doesn't have the digital-era coatings: the reason for its purple fringing 'issues' on digital:

I don't pretend to be an expert, but I believe it's something to do with digital sensors being more reflective than film: the FA77 isn't any more PF-prone on film thanother wide aperture lenses. As an example of how effective these improved coatings can be: the FA35 (see this thread) had a reputation as a PF-prone lens, but the DA35 f2.4 (which is supposedly the same optical design, albeit with a slightly smaller max aperture) does not.
