Is this extortion, or what?

Not entirely true. This represents Microsoft's shift from Windows as an operating system to Windows as a "service" - similar to Office 365 or Adobe's products like Photoshop CC. That change has contributed to a lot of flak for the company and a fairly low adoption rate of its "free" upgrade. (I was frankly surprised by that till I thought about it.) It's also starting to draw attention from a number of states attorneys general.

I'm neither pro nor anti, but I suspect this is going to play out in the courts for years to come.

300mm mirror lens too good to be true?

I'm not familiar with that brand, but I own 2 different Tamron Adaptall2 mirror lenses I originally bought to go on my PZ1P. They do just fine on digital, they're smaller and lighter than regular lenses, and you don't always get the donut bokeh. If the price stays that low, you could have a lot of fun.

Whether you shoot PEF or DNG is entirely a matter of preference. I've never bought into the Adobe DNG hype, it seems to have more meaning if you adopt the Adobe ecosystem (ie, Lightroom). A good raw converter supports either, and there are conversions available if you shoot PEF and later decide you want DNG.

As for ASP, I'm like you - I have version 1 and like it (certainly more than ACR). I've since moved on (not LR), so I really can't help you with the later versions.

Just remember that clouds throw shadows, so it's not a simple matter of just inserting a new sky in PS. A lot of folks won't notice, but others will. They'll tell you the image looks wrong, even if they can't put their finger on exactly why.

Also, the light direction on the clouds will have to match the light direction in the image. There's only one sun, although I've seen manufactured images with four or maybe five different light sources.

I'd be more inclined to follow the advice to use a grad or nd filter and just go with what you got. Early or late is best for the light, but it is what it is. Have a good trip!

I'm a big fan of Peterson too. I'm not sure if he's updated it, but he has/had another book called Learning to See Creatively. As others have said above, sometimes we photographers focus too much on the mechanics and camera specs and not enough on the artistic. Both are good, and for that matter, good fun. :)

Which Filter are better, to use or not use with Pentax K3, Pentax K3II and Pentax K1?

True enough, although that's usually easily fixed during RAW processing using the eyedropper.

Personally, filters were more useful when shooting film. Digitally I find ND grads and polarizers the most useful, "protective" filters like the UV a waste of time and money, and certain specialty filters like the blue-gold useful only when going for a specific effect. (Watch early episodes of CSI Miami and it's obvious somebody fell in love with the tobacco filter hee) So to the OP, don't spend money on any filter unless you can name what you hope to achieve by using it.

Neat concept - KS-2 to KS-2. :) My first "Pentax" was a Sears KS-1, and yes I still have it. Great little camera, and it still works. The lens is a Ricoh f2.8 28mm. I've bought Pentax ever since.

Thanks for reminding me.

Sad story, but it makes no sense to sacrifice the image quality of thousands of photos over a freak accident. There are times using a UV filter is appropriate, but protection (little as it may be) isn't one of them.

I'm not a big fan of Republicans, but you, sir, are the reason I don't like Democrats either.

You condemn their acts and then go on to commit the same acts - name calling, misrepresentation, holier-than-thou, and all.

Now before you continue your tirade, consider this: Some of us are the independents you need and court for our votes. If you don't get them, it won't be because of the Republicans, or radio talk show hosts, or any of the other red herrings you guys like to throw out. We're not as stupid as you'd like to think. It will be because you're more mean-spirited and guilty of hyperbole than they are.

Since you asked, yes it's a distraction.

I understand the purpose; I just wish it was a suffix instead of a prefix. If I'm scanning for a particular something, the hierarchy should be product first, followed by shipping destination. Because I really don't care where it will ship to if it's not what I want.

Poll: Do you use an external flash?

Do you use an external flash? yes
if so, in what situation and will you use it and what technique? when it will improve the photo and isn't disallowed for some reason. I typically use it off-camera and have been known to mount it to the tripod instead of the camera. Or I'll use it on-camera with a Better Beamer. All decisions depend on the shot.
and what flash? AF360FGZ
if not, do what are your ways in dealing w/ low light? depends on what I'm photographing. I'd rather increase iso than use a shallower dof in most cases. Limited focus can be overdone and while it plays well on photo boards, it's not seen as "art" by most viewers.

Honestly it's like anything else in photography - you decide what you want to show, and do what it takes to show it. It's a tool, not rocket science. ;) The tools work flawlessly; training the photographer (me) is what's taken time and practice.

Oh, don't stop there. There are plenty of reasons to mistrust Gore, which his home state is painfully aware of.

The only people who believe his altruistic persona live elsewhere. He's never even tried to hide his personal conspicuous consumption, and he can't even show sympathy to the victims of ecological disasters (like Kingston). That's what happens when you judge someone by a movie; it's easy to confuse the character he's portraying with the man.

Not a huge fan of Fox myself, but it's sad to me that they're more willing to publish both sides than some of the more "conventional" outlets. It's a telling commentary on the state of media in general.

If you look around, there is a lot of open debate from reputable sources. They just don't seem to get the coverage.

There have always been other techniques for getting acceptable images in low light.

Really fast lenses have always had their place, and always will for the reason you cite: controlling DOF. The flip side of that is that they're often abused, in other words used inappropriately, by photographers who see them as the holy grail when they really don't need them for the kind of images they make. Once they've spent the money they're bound and determined to use them when the results are less than appealing.

Technology is a grand thing, but knowing how to use it properly is just as important.

It would be different if they could actually use their cameras. Some of the biggest complainers would benefit greatly by whining less and learning more. Even Pentax can't save them. :D

Yes that was mean, but the most useful thing on DPR is the ignore button.

Overall a very nice first effort.

I'm not a huge fan of the tilted lens effect, and you appear to have a number of them. (Six?) It loses its impact after a while and starts to look gimmicky. I'm not saying don't ever do it, just don't overdo it.

A lot of us learned to cope in the early days of digital and it stands us in good stead. Make friends with the curves command and don't sweat it.

Honestly, you're making this sound a lot harder than it has to be.
