Sticky: Dark exposure problems on K-30 or K-50? Discussion Thread

Tried again, and no luck getting the green solenoid to work for the ist DS flash popup....Not sure if I borked the solenoid it somehow. For now, I'll just give it a rest and use the body sans flash. I checked and the ist DS only has a shutter count around 2200. I also checked the count on my K30, it is around 2500. Guess I haven't been using it near enough.

I'm not sure. In my haste to fix the K30, I forgot to take a photo of the *ist DS wiring before de-soldering. :(
I think I hooked it up the same way, but it didn't work. So I swapped them around and it still didn't work.
I suspect I will need to do some additional filing on the horseshoe.

EDIT: Actually, I found a photo that verifies the wiring on the *ist DS...

My *ist DS came today and I quickly took out the flash solenoid (it was white) and put it in my ailing K30. The K30 seems to be working like new again! (before I took the green one out this AM, it took over 20 shots to start working.

I'm still trying to get the *ist DS to work again (flash not popping up)...If I don't, oh well. It was sold as a parts unit, but I found it to be working just fine today (before I took out the flash solenoid).

I first noticed my K30 started taking dark images last fall. Trying to take our annual family Halloween costume photo. It eventually started working after about 30 shots. Put it back in the case and had the same problem again around Christmas. (Not using it near as much these days). Took it out a week ago to get ready for my daughter's dance recital. Could not get it working. 50+ shots, a bunch of image previews. Finally read about the aperture solenoid problem. Took it apart and did some minor filing on the horseshoe, coated it in deoxit, it is working somewhat better, but I still get 5 or 10 dark images before it starts working.

So, I bid/won an auction for a $29 shipped *ist DS body today. Hopefully I get one that has two white solenoids.

K30 + 18-55WR = $479 Hunt via eBay

While that may be true with some packages (or other brands maybe), the K30 18-55WR package that I received from Hunt's was all in one box, clearly labeled as a kit containing the WR lens. In other words, it was not a 'white box' lens.

Years back when I bought my K20D, it was a body only box, with separate box for the lens, but it was a retail box lens, not 'white box'.

BTW, I am not upset that I spent $20 extra on my K30 kit (purchased back when it was backordered via the Hunt's website). I knew these were limited supply and $20 is not enough to worry about. After all, I did manage to get my 35mm F2.4 from Hunt's for only $150. That deal has disappeared as well.

They are getting these in on a fairly regular basis. I placed my back order for the K30 WR kit on July 11th, it shipped on the 17th, I received it a few days later. The kit was exactly as expected, with the WR lens.

I also placed a back order for the DA35 F2.4 on the same day (11th). It shipped out finally on the 23rd (supposed to receive it tomorrow). They are still offering both of these on the website.

Have no fear of back ordering. They honor the price, and don't charge until it ships (I have verified this with both parts of my order).

OK, lets not let this linger. Bump with a price drop. Open to offers and trades for compatible lenses. Would like to keep the kit together for now.

(Note: I already have 18-55WR, A50 1.7, DA35 F2.4, and F100-300mm.)

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
K20D kit w/ 18-55mm lens

Asking Price
$300 USD

Item Location
Atlanta (United States)

Item Description
I am selling this lightly used Pentax kit.

Pentax K20D body with only ~3300 shutter count.
Pentax DA 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 AL II zoom lens with caps and hood.
Comes in original box almost all of the original accessories (can't seem to find the video cord right now, but I'll keep looking). The lens strap has never been used. Includes an extra genuine Pentax battery.

Everything is in superb condition (I'd say, "like new", but I'm sure if you looked close, you might find a hairline scratch or something). The LCD screen is perfect and has been protected since new with a clear screen film. The lens glass is scratch free, the zoom and focus are grit free. The original Pentax lens cap broke one of the spring tabs so I replaced it with a good quality generic cap.

I bought this camera in late 2010 as a refurbished unit (the box was marked refurbished but there is no markings on the camera body. The lens was new. However, I've never been able to tell any difference between this body and a brand new camera. It has performed flawlessly for the last 3 years. The batteries still have excellent life.

I'm asking $300 shipped by FedEx Ground/Home. I would prefer to stay with shipping to CONUS only for now, but may consider shipping to HI, AK, and Canada. Shipping to HI/AK or Canada would be extra.

Will be packed as new, double boxed, etc. I haven't sold at the Pentax Forum, but I have excellent feedback on Ebay as billbillw. I also have good selling reputation at the Polk Audio forum, Audiokarma, DIY Mobile Audio, SV Rider, and at Audiogon. My username at all of those forums is billbillw.

That is a normal amount for a new Pentax camera. Pentax doesn't reset the shutter count after QC like some manufacturers.

Well, I ended up going the less expensive route and picked up the K30/WR kit for $499. I'll keep my A50 F1.7, pick up a DA35 F2.4 and use my F 100-300 for the long reach stuff. I'll miss the top LCD, and a few of the dedicated buttons, but I'm sure I'll get over it when I see the low light performance.

You can 'backorder' it from Hunts and lock in the the same price when it comes available. They don't charge until it ships.
I placed a backorder last week after it went out of stock and they emailed saying it was going to ship out today. So, they are getting some in still and honoring the $499 price. Not sure how many or for how long, but worst case, they cancel your backorder and never charge your card.

FYI: This deal was removed from the Hunt's page for a day or two, but it is now listed again, but indicates sold out. You can place a backorder though, which will lock in the 499 price. I'm not sure if/when they will get more, but when I talked to the sales rep, he said they do have them on order and expect them in (no ETA though). I decided to place a backorder for this (along with they smoking DA35 F2.4 deal they have, also backordered). I may never receive them, but they don't charge the card until they ship, so no loss really.

If there is a lower priced deal to come along, you can just cancel.

I've had a real hard time deciding on this. Now that the price has also dropped on the K30 (the $499 deal with the WR lens), I am weighing the previous option of the K5 with 2 WR kit lenses and the two primes from Adorama, or just get the K30 WR kit (only the 18-55 included), pickup just the DA35 2.4 separate, and keep my PKA 50 F1.7 manual lens (which I was planning to sell for ~$40). I have an SMC F 100-300 zoom, so I really don't absolutely need the 50-200WR, but it would be nice.

Overall, if I went the cheap route with the K30 WR kit, I'd save about $500. Of course, I'd be a lens short (no 50-200WR), and would be trading the DA50 F1.8, for my PKA equivalent, but I see that lens as something I wouldn't use as much other than for portraits, in which case, the old manual is probably every bit as good.

Man, its a tough one. I feel like if I settle for the K30, I will always wish I had the K5...

Got my pair the other day along with a new Transcend reader (USB3.0). Tested this card with Crystal disc and it was something like 85mb/s read, 45mb/s write. Not bad really.

Yep, I am just waiting for to sell my K20D kit and I'll be getting the K-5 double lens kit and the two inexpensive primes. Can't wait. It seems like the K-5 will do the things that I've always wanted my digital SLR to do (namely good low light images).

Man, that's WAY cheaper than the Lowepro Mini Trekker that I bought about 12 years ago! (I think I paid 4-5 times as much!)
Maybe a small step down in quality, but looks like it has most of the same features.
