Noisy K20D

I have found that my K20D is very noisey, It has been a great dissapointment in this respect, I have a friend with a *ist DS, and when his photos are blown up around 15 to 20 times it is almost impossible to see any noise, they are absolutly sharp and clear, right into the shadows, however I suppose the problem is no worse than most Canon DSLR cameras, and probably caused by the same thing, namely the use of a Cmos sensor, (The*isd DS uses a CCD sensor), Cmos sensors are somewhat prone to this type of problem, which may be why you get such noisey pictures from security cameras
My next consern is to pick up a decent *istDS body, to take the photos I want to print, and keep the K20D for remote wildlife photos, as the "Live View" is quite handy for this

If these are the best "quality" we can shoot with Pentax cameras

It's no wonder our (Canon) mates at the camera club look down their noses at us

Well you can't have everything ?

I figure a heap of cotton wool and a longer lens may help

But it's amazing how tolerant some wildlife is, you can very often see baby rabbits on motorway roundabouts, they don't seem to notice the forty tonners half a metre away

But must get back to some more bodging !!

Regards

Remote control of istDS without lens possible?

This is an update on my original reply, regards to using a Physical remote release

This system dose work perfectly on my K20D, and therefore presumably on the K10D, as they both use the same Pentax remote assistant (version 3)

My apologies for not checking the (*ist DS) software first

However, reading the various replies to this artical, has helped me considerably

I have, over the last six months modified quite a number of old lenses of mixed fittings, to the Pentax (K) fitting, some of these have reacted very well and some to say the least were iffy

After reading the reply from Cris Nielsen, I immediately went and checked on the lenses I had worked on, and low and behold, there was vertually no electrical resistance through the black nickal coating on some of the adaptor rings

So thank you very much Mr Nielsen

Hi there falconeye

Much obliged for your thoughts

Unfortunatly on this model both the computer (USB) lead and the Video output lead share the same socket, but not the same connections within the socket

Which does make life somewhat difficult !

Also there does not appear to be any way of getting a live video picture on to a computer screen via the USB socket, when you plug the USB lead into the camera, the live view instantly switches off

If I can't get the information that I am looking for, I know there is a work-around method, by fitting a four and a half minute timer into the remote control lead, this will take odd additional photos to ones I want, but it will keep the video output active

By the way If the camera battery goes flat while connected to a computer, the computer comes up with an error message, saying can't find camera ?

(The reason for asking this question origenally was because page 191 of the handbook, quotes, (If you intend to use the camera continuously for a long period, use the AC adapter, but it does not say wether all the settings will remain active)

Best regards Bodger

My suggestion to anyone who has this type of situation, is to use a physical remote control lead, these are very easy to make yourself (If your that way inclined), you only need a 2.5 mm straight STEREO Jack plug, a length of thin two core wire (Yes two core, you don't need the autofocus with a microscope) and any type of push button switch, a foot operated one is ideal, this should allow you to fire the shutter even if no lens is fitted at all !

I can't absolutly guarantee this works on a *istDS, but it works very well on a K20D, for copying 35mm negatives etc.

PS for anyone who wishes to try this, the wires are connected between the main body of the plug and the tip (The wire should be no longer than about six feet, to elimimate the risk of picking up static electrical pulses), If you need to make a longer lead, Just ask ?

Tweaking the K20D for Sharper Images

Mabe your only mistake was not asking the salesman what type of sensor was fitted ?

I have a friend who has a *ist DS which has a CCD sensor fitted that produces cracking results with any lens

The K20D was the first Pentax to fit a CMOS sensor, Canon took almost five years to get their software right for this type of sensor ?

And yes I did have to set my focus point seven sectors to the right to get the 18/55 lens to focus correctly

There is, an internal sharpness setting, by going to --- Fn > OK > Press the right hand arrow to check you are in (Natural) colour, Then press the UP arrow to move the box to the bottom left hand setting, roll the rear wheel to change to (fine sharpness) and press the right arrow to move to maximum sharpness

Nearly all CCTV security cameras use CMOS sensors, which probably accounts for the lack of tracing bank robbers

What you may be seeing is noise rather than focus problems, Pentax have already brought out one firmware upgrade to help cure this problem

But there, It may account for why the top ten selling digital cameras are from C---------

Also try taking a days worth of photos using manual focus focusing only, If it makes a difference, then your camera is almost certainly set incorrectly for the lens, If all else fails, look round for a *ist DS, you can still use all your old lenses !!!!!

Hi there, I am trying to track down an answer from someone who possesses a mains power adaptor for this model

On a K20D can the Video Output lead be made to stay active (I.E. Continously feed a separate TV or monitor) if the camera is connected to a Mains power supply unit ?

When used on it's internal battery it does not appear to stay active for more than about five minutes, even if the timer menu is set to off ?

I don't realy need a Mains power supply, but I will happily buy one Just to obtain the special connecting lead

With this camera and it's (Catch-in focusing) arrangment, I belive it would make an ideal unit for local and backyard wildlife photography

I have asked many dealers and even pentax themselves, but It appears to be a question that they have not been programed for !

Any thoughts would be much apprecated
