Problems with my Tokina SD 70-210mm 1:4-5.6 lens

blende8: You're right, that's exactly what happened. The pin was bent inwards just a little bit, just enough to make it a problem. What I did was apply some pressure with my fingers to get it straight again & perpendicular to the mount plate. Tested it & now it works fine as it should.

Thanks very much blende8!

Problems with my Tokina SD 70-210mm 1:4-5.6 lens

Hi all.

I've just won this lens on eBay. It's reviewed here: Tokina SD 70-210mm F4.0-5.6 Lens Reviews - Pentax Third-Party Lens Review Database

It arrived to me today. I mounted it on my Asahi Pentax KX, but noticed a problem. When changing to smaller apertures (from f/4 to f/16, say), the lens stops down immediately to the selected aperture. Hence, it's like stop-down metering, and the open-aperture metering of the PK system is gone. This is troubling because when it stops down, the image in the VF gets very dim..even at f/4 it's quite dim. I don't want to use this lens only at wide open aperture.

I then tried it on my ME Super..same problem occurs.

Has anyone had this sort of trouble with this lens?

I think I may have found a cause for it. Refer to the attached picture. Looking at the mount, I can see that the pin is present, but the 'tab' that's supposed to be near the pin is not there. What is the function of the 'tab'? And is it the culprit?

Would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance!

-Dani

Hi Tim, thanks for your input. But how about cameras without in-built meters or non-functioning ones? The meter of my KM is shot, so I meter with a handheld meter. Will FA lenses also work perfectly with older K-mount bodies? Pentax's lens nomenclature is still so confusing for me! Aarrgghhh.

Question is as above. A photo of the lens is here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/data/42/SMC-Pentax_A35-80.jpg

I'm thinking of getting this lens to use with my ME Super and KM (film bodies). I see the lens has an aperture ring, but still, woukd it work perfectly with my film bodies? Or is it more suited to AF bodies? Will it function with the ME Super's AE mode?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, a Judas window, is that what they're calling it? Hmm, I wonder why the reference to Judas. Anyway, I think you're correct..non Pentax lenses may have the aperture selector ring too far forward to have it displayed correctly in the VF. Thanks!

Thanks for your input Chris! A few nights ago, I lost out on a black KX with Rikenon lens on ebay..and I lost by only 1 dollar! Arrrrghhh! :( Well, better keep searching...I have this nagging feeling that my PK collection won't be complete until I have a KX :D

Dandaniel, thanks for this invaluable info too! I am left eyed too, and with the KX, I've read that the advance lever will poke into my right eye...if I'm not mistaken, that is. I find the ME Super's EV comp dial a breeze to use, too. But, I hardly ever use it or the EV comp dial on my K2...when I want to over/underexpose a picture, I just adjust the aperture/shutter speed accordingly by how many stops I deem correct.

Steve, will the MX's aperture info in the VF work correctly with non-Pentax PK lenses, like Sigma/Tamron? I've read somewhere that when using this lenses, the f-stop selected won't display correctly. Perhaps you can tell me how's your experience with the KX?

Man, thanks for that! I value your input highly, and I agree with what you said...from it, I assume that the K2/K2DMD has never been your favorite? This really makes me want to get a KX! Come to think of it, the MX may not fit me very well, I've studied photos of the top deck and that shutter dial really looks cramped in! That and the fact that I lost out on a bid on an MX on fleabay a couple days ago by just a few dollars makes me kinda frustrated. Regarding Eric, pity that I live so far away from where he is..oh well...

Jim! I swear it's true! Similarly, I saw one that went for USD60 just last night. :( Is it just me or are prices for film gear getting more & more expensive?

@Canada Rockies: I have been wanting to buy a KX for sometime now. Have yet to get lucky with one on fleabay. So, in the end, I'm looking to end up with the following bodies: KM, KX, MX, ME Super. The K2's position in that lineup is still questionable.

@lithos: Aww man, you really got me salivating over the MX's apparently divine VF there! So I take it the VF of the MX is waaaaaaaaay better than the VF of the ME Super? Man, I already love the ME Super's VF...imagine how the MX would be like. Oh, and yeah..the ASA setting ring & EV comp ring on the K2 is really quite awful! I prefer the ME Super's easy-to-handle EV comp dial over the K2's anytime.

@Vern: I like both metering styles Vern, both match needle of the K2 and also the LED's of the ME Super. I discovered the LED's of the MX is quite different that those in the ME Super..so I can't really say if I'll like them. I've read some people saying the metering LED's in the VF of the MX is quite useless and not as user friendly as the one in the ME Super...any thoughts? As for metering system, I love both full manual & also the AE capability of the K2 & ME super. Tough call eh? Thanks!

@k100d: Yeah, that's the reason I bought the K2 in the 1st place..because they're somewhat hard to find. Is the VF of the MX any better than the VF of the ME Super? I find that I can hold the ME Super quite comfortably, albeit I haven't put on any heavy tele lenses on it.

@8450tomg: Yup, the shutter of the K2 was one of the reasons why I bought it too. It's the 1st PK body that I own that has the vertical metal shutter. I've read people saying the K2's shutter sound is sublime, but I found out I prefer the ME Super's soft shutter sound even more. How's the shutter sound of the MX? Is it similar to the ME Super's shutter sound? One thing that kinda gives me doubts about the MX is that it has a cloth shutter, not a metal one. I somehow have the preconception that metal shutters are better and more reliable than cloth ones. True or false?

There's nothing wrong with sticking to the ME Super. I just like collecting Pentax bodies, be it M42 or PK mount. Just lately I got the urge to cull my collection a little, and the K2 just happens to be the one that I like the least. Yes, the K2 has match needle metering in the VF, but it's different that the one in the K1000.

Not sure if the MX the guy wants to sell to me has been overhauled/CLA'd recently or not, but it's in pretty good shape. You can see pics of it here: Picasa Web Albums - Teoh - PENTAX MX & 2...

There's another MX with a Chinon 50/1.7 lens that I'm watching on ebay right now. It's way cheaper than USD150, but it is also missing the rubber tip of the film advance lever. :( Hmmm....I'm not sure I can get a replacement for that rubber tip.

Yup, I agree with you Jim..and that's most probably what I'll do for now. Get the MX and test it out, if I like it better than the K2, I'll sell the K2. No point having so many PK bodies laying around :p

Regarding the SMC-M 28/2.8, I'm not really sure if it really goes for next to nothing now. Last night I watched one on fleabay, and it ended at GBP60, roughly USD100.

Thanks for your input!

Wow, a lot of good replies here, and very good feedback too. I need a moment to digest all of it, haha. Will reply with my replies & thoughts later. Thanks everyone!

@Nesster: Well, regarding your question about the K2's price in Malaysia, I'm only thinking about selling the body. Hmmm, with a CLA (costs $30 here), I can probably get around USD100 for it, if I'm lucky that is. If I sell it on eBay, then I don't think it'll fetch that much. The thing about selling on ebay from Malaysia is that shipping cost is so expensive. I got the K2 for $40 from eBay, then I had to pay another $40 just to have it shipped here.

Hi people. I know this is a highly subjective question, but should I sell of my Asahi Pentax K2 to get an MX? I bought the K2 about a month ago, and have only shot 2 rolls with it...well, so far, I'm sad to report that I haven't grown to like the K2 very much. I don't know why, it's hard to grasp the exact reason. Perhaps it's because I feel more satisfied using my Asahi Pentax KM, and even the ME Super I got a week back gives me more pleasure when I use it.

Is the MX really as good as people make it out to be? I like the small size of the ME Super, also it's weight. But I also like the KM's heft & bigger size..hmmm. I have average sized hands, so the issue of 'feeling cramped' when people with bigger hands use the MX is kinda moot for me.

And no, an LX is not a consideration for me anytime soon :p

I'm thinking I should run a few more rolls through the K2 soon, perhaps I'd grow to love it then. But there are some very good deals on MX's right now. A guy in my town wants to sell off an chrome MX with an SMC Pentax-M 28mm f2.8 for approximately $150. It looks to be in pristine shape. Is $150 too much to ask for an MX and the SMC-M 28/2.8?

Also, any thoughts on the SMC-M 28/2.8?

Would appreciate any feedback, thanks in advance!

Poll: I can only buy one camera this month - KX or K2?

Thanks for all your invaluable input everyone. I went for the chrome-bodied K2, got it for $42! But shipping is another $40, so that's $80 in total. Hmmph! Hope everything will be fine with it.

In the end, what made me decide on the K2 is that I'm left eyed, so I really don't want the advance lever to be poking in my eye when I want to meter. I have another SLR that does that, the Konica Autoreflex TC, and that lever poking in your right eye is a hindrance & detracts from the experience. Thanks to the person who mentioned this.

Anyway, now to get some more lenses. I only have 2 normal lenses now in K-mount, the SMC Pentax A 50/2 and the SMC Pentax M 50/1.7. Good lenses, but I'm not too keen on their plastic construction..a far cry from the metal of the screwmount lenses! Are there any metal-bodied/barreled K mount lenses out there? Which one is good? I want a wide angle & a tele.

Everyone, thanks for all your very helpful replies. I'm still digesting them, hope I can come to a decision soon!

By the way, the seller sent me some photos of the K2 just now. Everything looks ok, except for a dark smudge on one of the shutter blades. I asked him about it and he said it's not oil, just a dark smudge. He tried cleaning it with naphta & Qtips but it's still there. Perhaps it's just discoloration due to rubbing of the shutter blades? Is this a potential problem?

Hello all! My wife and my shrinking budget for this month means I can only buy one camera over the next 30 days, haha. So please help me choose between an Asahi Pentax KX or an Asahi Pentax K2. Let me know which one you will go for and why. If possible, also provide a rough estimate of how much one in good working condition should cost.

I already have an Asahi Pentax KM, and I love it. However the temptation of the KX's shutter sound and shutter speed & aperture displayed in the VF is too much for me. :D However, I wonder if upgrading from a KM to a KX is worth it..does the shutter speed & aperture display in the VF justify purchasing it?

I am more severely tempted by the K2, seems to me that the vertical metal focal plane shutter is more robust than the cloth on the KM & KX, and I read somewhere the shutter sound of the K2 is simply sublime. The K2 is more full featured as well..and mirror lock up ability, full manual or Auto Aperture Priority exposure too! BUT therein lies the rub, all the electronics governing the electronic shutter & the K2's dependence on batteries makes me a bit nervous. How well & how long does the electronics last?

So guys, please help me out, I need to decide in 3 days..thanks in advance!

@reeftool: Thanks for the feedback! Lol, I should've known M42 lenses would take 42mm diameter rear cap..silly me =)

@feverbeaver: Dude, thanks so much for the link! It was so useful! Just like u mentioned, the website also says that the filter size for the 55/2 Auto Tak is 46mm...does this mean I need a 46mm lens cap, or is filter size different from lens cap size? Reeftool said his has a 49mm lens cap.

Hmmm...i'm confused. :o
