Hi folks,
A quick question for those out there with better editing etc skills that i have (which is basically none). I have finally gottena few pics ready to upload to the flickr group but i am not sure of two things:
1) what size do i make them so i don't overload the flickr upload limit
2) how do i make them that size (i have photoshop 5.5 which i believe is about a million years old!)
I realise these are really basic questions and a search of the interweb will probably answer them, the danger is that I will get sidetracked if i do that and it will be another few monhts before my efforts with this fine lens get to be viewed!

Well, I'm still tryong to find some time to sort out the pics taken with the lens and get some posted. Taking some holidays in the next two weeks so will try to do so then.
Devisor, any sign of the lens arriving with you yet?

Well folks,
The lens has left Ireland (well probably not yet as I posted it at lunch time!) It's off to Norway to Devisor as there was no reply from the remaining Irish & English participants. I'll get some pics posted up when i get some time to edit them. Enjoyed using the lens and being part of such a great project.

Well folks, the lens arrived with me today. I'll get out for a walk around my local area after my daughter has gone to bed and start the Wicklow leg of the tour.

I have pretty much all the things you mention (or a version thereof).
I got the cheapest umbrella & holder i could find on ebay, though I got two as i wanted both a relective and a shoot through. They are both the smaller 33" ones but they are fine for starters. then i got the cheapest stands i could find (again on ebay) that went up to 7' - which is handy. I also ordered two sets of pt04 wireless triggers (which are grand as I have only used them in my house so range is not an issue). never tried them outside so have no complaints at all. i also ordered two hot shoe adaptors with pc sockets on them adn two short pc cables. these are handy for connecting the trigger to the flashes while not increasing the height of the overall package by as much as the pt04 reciever does. recently i have also picked up two flash stands (the little plastic feet things that come with fancy high end flashes). these are great when you are using bare flash and don't need the stand.
a lot of people recommend getting the best you can afford, but my experience is that the cheap ebay stuff is fine if you just want to experiment and nto lay out big money in doing so.

yes, it came with instruction alright. I didn't fully read them though! I went with the advice I got from my local shop (and made some of it up along the way too!) i do recall it saying something like 1 litre is usable for 10 to 12 rolls of film somewhere on the box, and i took that to mean 1 litre of mixed up working solution.
brkl - courageous; not really - more like a beginners mistake that worked out alright in the end.

Hi Tuco,
I didn't at first realise that i had to throw out the developer after each use. I reused the developer the second time round (it was stored in a light tight container for two days). I was speaking with the shop where I bought it from and they said that that was probably not the best idea. So when i started the next batch of six films i mixed up a new lot. They said that i could reuse it between batches as long as it was immediate. So for the six films i processed them two at a time right after eachother, giving extra time for each subsequent batch. Again they all seem to be fine (to me anyway.)
The films that were developed in the reused developer seem ok to my untrained eyes as well though.
I do have a bathroom with no window in it but i found the changing bag to be fine to use - that was the part i was most apprehensive about to be honest. though i am only using 35mm, i could imagine that the larger formats would be more tricky.

Thanks again for all the really helpful advice. It's really appreciated. So I developed my first two roll, then went and did two more, having read the advice above.
I forgot all about the temperature of the chemicals and jumped straight in, lesson learned, though the situation was salvaged as I remembered in time and gave some extra time using the chart in the instruction as a guide. Again, very unscientific but it seems to have worked out ok, as in there are images on the negatives!
Followed up quickly with two more rolls and again, the results look good to me, though I am no expert at assesing negatives.
I got brave then and mixed up a new batch of rodinal and went at it, and got through six more rolls, two at a time, and again, they all seem to have worked out well.
So, I'm now a veteran of 12 rolls, 6 acros 100 and 6 neopan 400. Time to move onto printing, but that will be a whole other thread.
If anyone is reading this and is thinking of developing their own B&W negatives then just go for it. It's really not very difficult and the feeling of satisfaction when you see the negatives hanging up to dry with images on them is immense.
You will need -
light proof changing bag
bottle opener
scissors
developing tank & reels
chemicals
developer
stop bath
fixer
rinse
measuring jug with divisions on it (graduated cylinder or the like, cooking jug etc)
thermometer
timer

Thanks all for the replies, I really appreciate you taking the time to do this.
I'm using mostly fuji acros 100 & neopan 400. I have only developed two rolls of acros 100 so far. I got the recomendation of 1:30 for the developr and 9 minutes at 20 degrees from the local photo shop (John Gunn Camera shop in Dublin) where I bought the chemicals. They seem to be very knowledgeable so I went with their recommendation.
I looked at the negatives yesterday evening briefly and they look ok to my untrained eye, so things seem to have worked out well.
In the future I'll be more exact with my timings and temperatures - repeatability is my new word!
I'll go and get myself a dropper bottle for the photoflo so - good advice and much appreciated.
More questions now -
How do you ensure that the temperature is 20 degrees - I have a thermometer and I just mixed hot and cold water until it was in or around the 20 on it - it's analogue and I wasn't too scientific about it.
Final question - how often can I reuse the developr and fixer? I have poured them into compressible plastic containers for reuse.
And finally finally - this indicator stop bath that is mentioned - anyone got a brand name?

Hi folks,
I have been shooting B&W for a long time. I used to get a local specialty printer to process my negs and then I would print them myself. Unfortunately she moved and is no longer local so I have been building up a stock of exposed film in the fridge. Last night i set about processing my films, i have a two roll tank and a four roll tank but I decided to start with the two roll tank, that way if i mucked it up it would not be so bad!
so i proceeded as follows:
got the film on the reels and in the tank, headed to the kitchen and went for it.
Developer - i think it's agfa rodinal - mixed 30:1 with water at 20 Degrees. Gave it 9 minutes (per recommendation from the shop where i bought the chemicals) with agitation every minute, tapping the tank on the counter to dislodge any air bubbles.
Poured out the developer - and in with the stop bath - i used plain old tap water, sloshed it in, agitated and poured it out. I repeated this a number of times (maybe 3).
In with the fixer - ilford rapid fixer - mixed 4:1 with with water at 20 Degrees. Gave it 5 minutes (per the instructions) agitating every minute.
Out with the fixer and started to wash - was going to go for the 5 minute wash with water through the hose thing that came with the tank but the hose end won't fit the tap so i followed the ilford instructions instead - three rinses with increasing inversions. I then added some photo flow to a final rinse, shook it all about and poured it out.
Took the negs out, hung them up and used a squeegee tongs thing to wipe them down.
Will check how they look when i get home, but they looked good to me last night - ie there were images where images should be!
So - some questions:
1) how critical is the timing of the various steps? if i go over the time say with the developr of the stop bath is there a problem? can you over fix?
2) should i use a chemical stop bath - vinegar (diluted) or is water ok?
3) what is a few drops of photo flo - is it literally two ro tree drops? i poured a little bit in (didn't use any scinetific measuring method) followed by water - there were a lot of bubbles so i rinsed it changing the water a few times after wards until there were no more - is this ok?

Hi Bethc,
i have a Metz 48 which i can fire wirelessly with my K20. you can do the same with your K10. It works well but as far as i am concerned you are better off with a radio trigger (i have the oft criticised cactus older model copy - PT04 is written on them - they work great for me) and using manual setting on the flash. i picked up a couple of older canon flashes 540ez that don't work with digital canon cameras so they were cheap enough. plenty of power and plenty of adjustment options. I also got some cheap light stands and umbrellas and holders on ebay - pretty much the cheapest i could find to start experimenting with and haven't looked back since. check out the strobist website for a treasure trove of information. let me know if you need any more info on any of the bits i have mentioned.

i picked up a couple of canon 540ez flashes. and they are great for strobist use. they don't work with the canon digital bodies so are easy enough to find reasonably cheaply. they work great with my cactus V2 (ebay versiojnsof anyway) and have manual power adjustment down to 1/128. you can also specify the head coverage from 24mm to 105mm which is handy sometimes. they can be set to always on or to power off after a period of inactivity using a the sliding power switch. all in all a great alternative to the usual nikon sbXXX option.
