I shot at our Texas State Fair last October in a thunder storm and the K7 with the DA* 50 - 135 performed flawlessly. I was completely soaked but the camera had no issues at all. I was more worried about lightning than damage to my K7.

Thanks everyone for the great responses. I get my 50mm 1.2A tomorrow so I will definitely order one. Funny that you mention the indoor flair Marc as I shot inside with my 1.4 last evening and sure enough there was some flare from a nearby lamp. I must have just been lucky so far that I have not encountered it until now. Thanks again for all of the hood suggestions.

I have accumulated quite a few 50mm lenses and none of them have hoods. I'm guessing hoods were not part of the package like most modern lenses now. The hoods I have seen on ebay appear to be quite small. How important have ya'll found it to have hoods on your 50mm's? Most of my use has come in low light situations so I have not encountered flare yet but I was wondering what the opinions of the more experienced users might be and should I be looking to purchase hoods for my 50's. Thanks!

Thank you for your responses. Your shot of the kid on the mound is great. I still don't know what I should get but I hope to get some like these. Thanks!

Howdy. I recently started taking some sports (football) shots with my DA* 50-135mm 2.8 and K7 and although this lens is great (it seems great to me) for many of the close shots I find that it does not have the focal length to get to the other side of the field so I miss quite a few shots because of this. I have been reading many of the posts in this discussion group and it seems like there are just as many varied opinions as there are lenses. But what the heck. Let me have your opinions if you don't mind. So here goes. Here are the lenses I think I am considering:
DA* 200mm F2.8 (seems fast but will the focal length limit me?)
DA* 300mm F4 (Seems long enough but should I be concerned that it is a slower lens? Will it struggle at night time football games?)
DA* 60-250mm F4 (maybe redundant since I have the 50-135 already covered. Am I getting that much more lens for the money?)
Sigma APO 100-300mm F4 EX DG (AF Lens) (Same issue with DA*300 about the speed. Would tele be more appropriate than a prime?)
So that's it in a nutshell. Oh and one more thing. Since I am new to this I may be ignorant. Is there a less expensive road to take to get the shots I want? I have always heard you "pay for what you get" and am assuming this goes for lenses as well since these lenses that I mention are kind of pricey. If you have any alternative lens suggestions please feel free to mention them. Thank you for your opinions.

Thank you all for that great information. Mr. Fletcher the FA 50 1.4 is indeed the one I have been looking at/for so I appreciate that info. As soon as I learn to post some photos I will post some that I have taken with my sears lenses to get some critiques on what I can do better. I look forward to the FA 50. Again thanks all for the great info.

Hello All,
I am a newbie amateur with a K100D super and have enjoyed the portraits I have made with my Pentax A 50mm F2 lens and recently purchased a Sears 50mm f1.4 for $10 and have like the images it has made. My question is this. How much better would my images be if I purchased the newer Pentax autofocus 50 mm f1.4? If the old manual lenses produce images as good as the newer autofocus lenses then why purchase a new one when the old ones are so reasonable. I know there are some situations where an autofocus would help but I learned on the old manual K1000 so this is not a huge inconvenience for me especially for portraits where I have time to set up a shot. Thank you in advance for your answers.
