B&H Taking Pre-Orders for the K-7

I guess I should have actually read the product page thoroughly, huh... :-)

Its definitely encouraging that they are charging right away though, I seriously doubt that a place like B&H would do that if they weren't positive that the product would be shipping very shortly.

Pretty much the only *rumored* one-up feature of this *rumored* GX30 that I think is plausible is the AMOLED display. Samsung is pretty much at the forefront of this technology, and it will soon be rolled out on mobile phones, P&S cams, etc. I doubt they would want to give it to Pentax before they have it on their own products.

If it is a magnesium+WR body, its not going to look like the K20/GX20. There is no logical reason why samsung would do that. Furthermore, the 3" AMOLED swing/tilt display would require a new body design (button placement, etc), as would the beefed up shutter mechanism, GPS and WIFI chips, etc.

The timing of these *rumors* is not coincidental. Neither is the fact that its basically a juiced-up K-7. The K-7 has received some good press, and someone wants Samsung to steal the spotlight. Has nobody questioned where these "stats" came from? Certainly not from a source with serious industry credibility.

That aside, IF the announcement date of this rumored Samsung turns out to be July 7th, I'm a little concerned about the working relationship between Samsung and Pentax. I know that if I were a Pentax exec, I would certainly not be pleased to see Samsung come out with a competitor product literally the same week as the (hopefully) U.S. K-7 launch. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

As the previous poster said, there is always something new and more exciting coming, the longer you wait the fewer pictures you get to take.

B&H Taking Pre-Orders for the K-7

I ordered mine this morning, and the charge showed up on my accout within an hour.

I was surprised, I assumed they would not charge until shipment on a backordered product, so I called and they said that they do charge at the time of ordering.

I ordered mine at about 8:15 am this morning, so hopefully i'm in line for the first shipment.

I've heard elsewhere, however, that B&H has been taking preorders by phone before today, but I'm not sure if this is true.

I would think that B&H's reputation would afford them a large initial shipment, so I'm hoping to have mine by next weekend (fingers crossed!!) I couldn't help but click "1-Day Air" shipping (my rationale is that I would have paid this much in sales tax to get it locally)....

I've called CC Camera, they do not have them in stock, despite their website claiming that they would be available today. They simply said they have a bunch on order but are just waiting on Pentax to ship them.

The video was removed by the user apparently. What was the video of?

Release date of K-7

Welll... I just got off the phone with Cord Camera (where I pre-ordered the K-7 a couple of weeks ago), and they informed me that their warehouse does not expect a shipment until AUGUST 15th!! I was pretty shocked. The last time I had spoken with them, they were anticipating getting them as early as this past week (which I did have a hard time believing). I'm just a little frustrated now, since I've already sold my Pentax body and other gear and have a wedding the first week of August.

I'm no shipping/manufacturing/distribution expert, but it seems to me that Pentax could have done a better job releasing the K-7. It seems to me that a LOT of potential K-7 buyers (including myself) are not attached to the Pentax system, so I would think a 2-3 month delay between announcement and shipment is simply too long to be able to hold someone's interest when other equally competent cameras are already on the market.

Perhaps this is isolated to Cord Camera (things aren't looking good for their business), but the uncertainty of an arrival date for all of the US (have we heard anything more definite than "mid-July" from Pentax??) has me worried, and has me looking at other brands. I can't imagine a corporation as large as Pentax (or Hoya) not actually knowing when its biggest, best, most-anticipated consumer product will actually launch MONTHS before the actual date, let alone a couple of weeks. I can't imagine running a business in such an uninformed, sloppy, 'it will get there when it gets there' manner. Nikon's D5000 was announced April 14th and shipped April 27th, for example.

I'm hoping the Cord Camera associate read the screen wrong, or was looking at the wrong product, or something...but if I honestly can't expect to spend $1300 on the K-7 until almost 3 months after its announcement, my $1300 is going elsewhere.

End rant.

Does anyone know if/when the K-7 will be available in China? Or does Pentax not distribute on a large scale there yet (other than Hong Kong)?

I'll be there for 4 months or so in the fall, so I'm just curious about general availability of Pentax gear there as well...

My best guess is that Willoughby's knows that they will only be getting 5 K-7s in their first shipment from Pentax, coming sometime in the next couple of weeks, so listing them as "in stock" might be a good way to sell all 5 rather quickly (whether they're able to ship them to the buyer right away or not).

Seems like a decent review, the only thing that really surprised me was the assessment of the shutter sound as loud and mechanical. Earlier reports were saying just the opposite.

Of course, this is just another pre-production unit, which the reviewer eacknowledges in his conclusion. All in all, a pretty thorough review.

May try DA*300mm from Cameralensrental.com

Does anyone have any experience with actually purchasing a lens from cameralensrental.com? I know that their website says that if you rent a lens from them and then decide to buy it, a percentage of the rental fee is credited towards the purchase. Does anyone know what this percentage tends to be? And are their prices more in line with brand new street prices or with used market prices? I don't think I would pay retail for a lens that has been shipped around and used by who knows how many photographers, but being able to try it out first would be nice.

I just got off the phone with my local dealer with whom I have the K-7 preordered. He informed me that they "have a scheduled shipment from Pentax next week, not sure if the K-7 will be on it but definitely have a Pentax shipment coming".

Could it really be here (Ohio) so soon??

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
K100D w/ Kit Lens

Asking Price
200

Item Description
I am selling my K100D and Kit lens to add to my K-7/lens fund.

I am the original owner, it was purchased in December of 2006, though it has only approx. 3,200 shutter activations.

There are two cosmetic issues. First, the plastic door that covers the USB/DC/AV outputs is broken. I'm sure fixing it is only a matter of ordering the part and DIY, but it in no way affects the output of the camera so I haven't bothered. The only other issue is a small scratch on the pop-up flash unit. Again, purely cosmetic.

The lens is free of scratches, like new.

Unfortunately I do not have the original packaging.

PM me if you're interested!

Lens Recommendations for China, London, Europe

I'll be studying at Zhejiang University of Technology, as part of the Middlebury-CET school abroad.

I am definitely more concerned about rain in the UK, not so much in China, as you said.

I looked through the EXIF data of a few of my albums, and honestly maybe 2-5% of my shots were at 18mm, so I'm just not sure if I should let a UWA like the 10-20mm take up so much of my budget. Any other suggestions?

I've got the digicam covered with a Fuji 50fd, which actually takes pretty good photos.

I'm also personally not big on flower photography, so a lens with macro capability is not really a must.

I have heard good things about the 55-300, but I think i would rather have a brighter lens at the sacrifice of longer reach. Ideally, I'd like to be able to have f2.8 or faster available most of the time.

Keep them coming!

Lens Recommendations for China, London, Europe

Hello!

I'm a college student, and I will be spending ~10 months studying abroad. I'll be in Hangzhou, China for the fall semester and London for the Spring semester. I've used a K100D kit for a few years, but I'm ready to move up, so I've been saving for a K-7 and some glass to help me document what I hope will be the best 10 months of my life. I'll mostly be in urban environments (street photo, people, portraits, ect), but I also plan to do some traveling to the more naturally picturesque areas of China and around Europe (landscape and architecture). Weight and size is a concern, WR is a plus, but most of all I want to be able to get the most out of the K-7 IQ wise.

BUT I'm stuck sifting through all of the amazing lenses Pentax (and others) have to offer, and I need some help deciding. I really can't spend more than ~$1000, and the less I spend on lenses, the more I can spend on travel, etc.

My first thought was a DA* 16-50 and 50-135 pair for the weather sealing, but its a bit out of my price range, even used, and I'm hesitant about QC issues with the 16-50. But I'm loving every image I see coming from the 50-135, and I feel I might use this range more as I very often find myself wanting more reach from my kit lens.
So maybe 50-135 and a wider prime? Or possibly the tamron 17-50 or sigma 18-50?

While I'm attracted to the versatility of zooms, I also have had the thought that it might be interesting and challenging (in a good way) to shoot this entire experience with only one or two prime lenses. The FA and DA Limiteds have definitely caught my regard in this sense, there is just something about the images they produce that you know just couldn't come from a zoom, and I'm sure they would produce stunning video as well. But I'm worried that if I take, say, just a 31 Limited, I'll be wanting more reach or more WA.

For me, this is a huge investment, so I am considering carefully and would value any advice anyone has to offer. Thanks in advance!

K-7 Feature Questions

Hi John-

Not so much a question about a K-7 feature, necessarily...

Do you know if Pentax has any plans to bring back the Student rebate program that expired last June? There are many reasons why student discount programs are good for business: bringing new, young consumers into a system that they quite possibly will invest in for many years, getting young people excited about a brand (Apple comes to mind), and simply helping out college students like myself :-)

I'm travelling to and studying in China and London for a year on scholarships and grant money, and would DIE for a new k-7 to take with me, and a small discount would make it all that much more possible.

Any hope?
