Ring Flash for Macro and Portrait?

Hallo

Thanks for your advise, yeah, I wanted to use wireless flash (I have Pentax 540 and 360) but I can not figure out how to make it happen. I mean, my K10D's built-in flash is non-working condition (I am supposed to send it to Pentax for rerair, but I can not afford a life without it more than 3 days, I still did not take care the repair, yet.) so the wireless function does not work at this moment....

I have quickly look at the site you mentioned, it looks like there are lots of interesting information as for lighting.

Someone told me that photography is all about how to capture "lighting". Using lighting equipment definately makes photography more interesting. And I am just starting it. There are much much more for me to discover fun in photography.

Thanks for everyone for your advise!

Yeah, it seems like this is what my friend was talking about. I went to sites where sells studio lights, but most of them are too heavy to carry around and I could not find "ring flash". Price does not seem to be too much out of my budget, I will get it for my Christmas gift. Thanks!

Ring Flash for Macro and Portrait?

Hallo,

I am a year experienced K10D user, learned bid of exporsure, aparture, DOF and some other basics. And just starting to play with lighting. (well, it's the most important factor, right?)

For the first time, I did portrait with a model our door. And found it's so difficult to get good shots, having proper/even/flat lighting throughtout face. I used flash light and many different sun light on his face, but result was not good. Those photo are good snap shots, but as portrait photo, they are not good at all.

Then, he told me that pros uses "flash ring". I went many shop site but could not find much, only thing that I think it's it! is below. It is sold sa macro ring flash, is this something I can use for portrait? Is this a good stuff among other product? I found Canon, Nikon, Olympus product, but they do not work on Pentax (I assume). Or am I looking totally wrong product? I also plan to use this for macro.

Somebody please advise me?

Oh, yeah, the ad is the best, in my opinion, and it is exactly who Pentax is, in my opinion and what I want Pentax continue to be, in my opinion. It really made me laugh and impressed to know how Pentax/Hoya is serious about their success.

Yeah, I have also seen "The little geek who always wins technology fair" ad on magazine, that was very cool! The best magazine ad Pentax ever did, in my opinion! I almost cried when I saw that on air plane. Of course, there are tough competition ahead, but I can definately see good change in Pentax that makes me totally believe that Hoya is backing them up! I am glad to make a decision getting DA*50-135mm that I got last week. The lens is amazing people! I am even thinking taking money off 401K to get DA*16-45 now.

Hallo Stewart

Thank you for your advise. Whenever I talk to person like you (very well experienced photographer, maybe a pro?), I feel so embarassed being so ignorant, but at same time, I am so enlightened!! Tomorrow, we have halloween party at work and I will take shots indoor with flash, this new "technique", I will enjoy great result for sure!

By the way, I have visited Heidelberg a couple of years ago, it was one of the best scenery in the trip to Europe then. I regret I did not start photography hobby then..... But I am planning to visit Germany in the new year, this time with Pentax. It definately make the visit much more interesting and exciting!

Thanks,

Hallo

I also just got one! I mean just ordered and waiting for the arrival. I have sigma 100-300mm that I love. I shoot some sports (surfing) but mainly my subjects are event, park (zoo) and city scene, and found 200-300mm range is little too tough to capture the target in right focus, 50-135mm range would be perfect, that I feel. Also, sigma 100-300mm, clear but I want richer color, so I decided to get DA*.

Can't wait to have it!

Hallo

It's been a while for me to come up to this question, since Jan 2007 when I got the first DSLR which is D10K.

The beginning time, "bright" and "clear" lens was the priority and I never thought putting filter helps photography. But now I tried PL filter on sunny day, it took amazing photo!

How about using PL filter indoor with flash?

All readings I did saying, PL filter is an excellent tool for sunny outdoor shooting. I can not find anything saying it impove image quality when it is used indoor with flash.

Would anyone tell me it works, too?

Portrait Lens / DA*50-135 or DA70

I exactly know what you mean about 77 and 43. Very very interesting way to discribe the feeling of those lens. Well, now, I hear that FA LTD = DA* > DA LTD. Of course, I know it's all depend on what's object, theme, condition of scene, skill and all other, and can not simply say which is better. But your words:

"43, 77 (and now the 50-135) is like remembering your first really romantic kiss. Viewing the results from the 40 and 70 are more like kissing your sister"

totally got me! I was leaning towards getting 40 & 70 but now I am deciding getting DA*. (besides, I have few lens in wider range (10-17, 14, 21, 31, 43) but do not have much tele side, 50-135mm range works perfect for me.)

Thanks,

Mr. The Guy

Thanks for your reply. That's a good point that I never really paid attention before. I always shoot jpeg, did not want to go raw, since I thought it is such huge work on computer. But recently, I've realized that D10K can process raw into jpeg relatively easy without PC.

Also, my concern of purple fringe is with FA77 and FA31, those do not have proper hood. (but very stylish as it is!) I never really thought that hood would do anything, but I guess it would for the matter. Thanks for your advise, I will try do both suggestion.

By the way, as you are talking in other thread, I also feel that DA is built with newer technology and perticularly designed for digital photo and DA would perform better (easier?) than FA that is old lens. Please do not take me wrong, with skills, knowledge, proper handling, FA is such a suberv performaer, especially LTD ones, I believe. But what 's your opinion to compare FA* & DA*? Reviews and samples indicate me that FA* is better than DA* that how I feel. Because almost all of review I read about FA* (85, 200, 70-200...) is saying they are better than any other lens, but most of reviews of DA* is saying they are great and fine lens. (= I have not read anything saying DA* is better than FA*, except its size and QSF).

Hallo Lazar

Thanks for your reply. I have spoken to few people who did exactly same as you did. (sold DA LTD to replace by DA*) And those people told me that with DA*, you can take similar superb photo that DA LTD would do. So, the conversation's conclusion was any two of DA 21/40/70 LTD=one of DA*16-55 or 50-135. That tells me that, if my focus is portrait (around 70MM), I should get DA70.

However, I can not get away from the desire to become owner of DA* (or any *) lens.

I guess, what I am hoping to hear is, "get DA*, DA* is the legendary performer, as great as FA*". (but I got a feeling that, after I get DA*, I would get DA LTD anyways.... LBA, LBA......)

Thanks,

Hallo

I have been enjoying snapshots (family and travel), landscape, events, macro (flowers) photo with K10D for about 10 months. And I will have opportunity to take a poffessional fashion model in few weeks which would be my first real portrait photography experience. (I am no pro in any means at all.)

I have kit zoom lens (DA18-55 & DA50-200), but ever since I got Pentax primes, I never used those zoom lens any more. And I totally enjoy and believe in goodness/joy of primes.

At this opportunity, I was thinking to get DA70 LTD in addition to my FA77 LTD. FA77 is such a wonderful lens, but recently, I started to notice "purple fringe" issue with FA lens. And I understand that, although length are similar, DA70 and FA77 have different charactors/colors which I am very keen on trying the newly designed "portrait prime lens" particulary for digital photo.

Then, I've found that with extra $400-450 on top of price of DA70, I could get DA*50-135.

I have seen many posts, articles, reviews, samples of FA* that really making me wanting FA* (85, 200, 70-200....), but as you know, the prices are way tooooo high for me to convince myself to pay for used ones.

Now here are brand new DA* that most of reviews and samples that I see telling good reputation. If I am spending $1000, I want it to be amazing! However, those are not as great as FA*.

Anyways, here is my inquiry:

For who has or used DA*50-135 and/or DA70, which lens perform better as for the image quality (color, resolution for portrait) at 70mm?

I am feeling prime must be better than zoom, at the same time, *lens must be better than LTD lens. Weight, size, convenience of zoom is not key to me, I am really looking for hands on information of image quality. Is DA* zoom really great as legendary FA*? Or if I am not in need of zoom, Does DA70 LTD perform better in image quality over DA* zoom?

Sorry for the long sentence, but any input will help me in great deal.

Hallo

I also got mine a month ago. I am no expert (really a beginner...), so I can not make any comment in depth concerning technical aspect of this lens but for sure I am emjoying the high / solid quality of this. I still need to take a lot more to know capability of the lens but I feel with F5.6 and up, contrast and deep color makes nice photos.

I did use x1.4 (sigma) for this sample.

K10D Built-In Strobo Problem, Help Me?

Guys,

Wow, I did not think about the possibility of selling another one via e-bay, great idea! Also, I am so encouraged hearing your suggestion of getting second body. I somehow felt getting second body is only for prefossional / semi-professional prestageous people and not for an amature like me.

Well, I am not rich at all, but D-photography is the only hobby for me now, comparing to people who travel, buying cars/motor cycles, furniture, boating, golfing, skiing.... I can use all my money to D-photography.

In the past months, I have bought a lot of lens (you call L.B.A., right?). FA31, 77, 43, DFA 100, DA 14, 21, kit lens (DA50-200, DA18-55) and Sigma 100-300 F4. I was thinking getting second one would be so useful using those lens simulteneously!

Although, I was hoping Pentax release new model, like up-schaled K100D or K1D or something like that. But, it does not seem like they are not even introducing anything any time soon, another K10D would be the best option for me now.

Thanks,
zenzenyoyo

Thanks for your message, YES, the battery is totally charged in full. (I tried two fully charged battery.)

By the way, I have spoken to Pentax and be asked to send it back to them for repair and told that it will take 20+days. I am not sure if I can be without camera without 20+days..... I just got FA43 and Singma 100-300 F4.... I also did not have enough time to play with FA77 and 31 and DA21, yet. Should I buy second body? Or just forget about built-in flash?

Thanks for your quick reply. I was afraid to hear that, although I was expecting it. I also agree that, comparing to other parts of body/parts, built-in strobe seems like cheap/weak made that I was hoping nothing like this happens.

Expecting that the flash is dead, I was thinking several options, sending it back to Pentax for repair/replace which would take a month. Then, I will not have camera for a month which is not really option for me. So, I would buy another K10D now, then there is no no-camera days. But I was hoping to buy new model that may come in the future, but then I will have no-camera month in ahead of me.... bad! Another option is to buy ist-D or something that is cheaper than K10D, but then, I would not like less pixel image, I guess. Or, I may just keep using this K10D since I do have AF-540FGZ flash. Problem will be, then warranty will be expire and I will have to always carry this large strobe with me. I understand build-in strobe is not really good, but it is surely very handy for easy use.

Thanks again,

Hello

I have been using K10D for 4 months with variety FA/DFA/DA lenses. And I am totally enjoying this forum! Now I need some help about K10D problem.

I use it every weekend taking average 500-600 shots per week. I am an amature and do not use it like proffessional / industry use. Last night, right after I was playing with digital function bottons such as AE lock and others, built-in strobe stopped functioning.

Since it was working without any problem and I did not treat it roughly nor dropped or anything like that, I thought problem was not caused mecanically/physically, it was cause digitally, meaning I by mistake screwed up with function settings.

The reason why I think so is that when the strobe is shut, I can release shutter. But when strobe is open, I can not release shutter. Then, I change the shutter release setting to " release shutter without waiting for strobe re-charged". Then, without flashing I can release shutter. My guess is that, somehow, it stopped re-charging strobe.

My question here is:

Is there any function setting that I can choose "re-charge strobe" or "do not re-charge strobe"?

Does anyone experience similar problem as I mentioned? If so, what was the problem?

I should call Pentax but I am at work now and I do not have warranty/serial number nor even the camera with me. So I am hoping that someone here have knowledge/experience above helping me out.

I appreciate any advise or opinion.

Thanks,
zenzenyoyo

I totally agree with you that prime is such a wonderful tool to play with. I bought DA18-55mm and DA50-200mm together with K10D, expecting I would be using them all the time that covers every needs. But once I started using prime (my very first one was DFA100mm), I almost never go back to zoom. (though, I have to say that if DA star zoom become available, I may be saying something different!)

Your photos are great! Definately with your inspiration, DA14mm could become such a great portrait lens. I can learn a lot from your sample. Thanks,

I was having difficulty to decide either I want to get DA12-24mm or DA14mm for a while. Many people told me that F2.8 (DA14mm) is not really necessary for wild lens and F4 (DA12-24mm) is good enough. But as I mentioned earlier, landscape is not the only object and F2.8 gives great deal of bokeh. I can not say for sure but I feel that prime lens (DA14mm) should give greater quality of image than zoom. Also, one of the benefit of DA12-24mm, zooming, is not attactive to me any more, I am rather enjoying the fixed flaming with DA14mm that makes/stimulates me for more interesting aproach to photo.

Thanks,

Cool! That's exactly how I found it the best way to practice and to learn this lens!!

When I got this new lens (DA14mm), I only thought wide lens should be taking landscape. And I took several landscape shots which were fine but I could not figure out if they are good enough or not. Then I was going to change it to macro (DFA100mm) to take close-up and portrait. But since the new lens is very cool looking with K10D, I thought "well, let's continue it with this new lens for all day!". Then I found it takes so many interesting shots with various objects and angles. It's been 10 days, since I attached DA14mm to my camera on the day I got. All my photos are taken with this!

Thanks for your advise that totally encouraged me to keep going!

After months of exploration by Macro (DFA100mm) and Fish-Eye (DA10-17mm) with my K10D, I just got DA14mm last week.

This is such a handsome looking lens with very solid build. Though, it was not too easy for me to be able to create good shots, as a novis photographer. The color and feeling of the pictures are very natual (comparing macro and fish-eye) that, I think, requires some level of skills/experiences/knowledge of photography. But finally I got few shots that I like. I am sure I will find more about this lens, but I highly recommend this lens to everyone. Very fun once I found how this lens needs to be used.

Thanks for the complement for my photo. I am a beginner but DFA100m Macro does the job! The lens is very sharp and fun! I recently got DA10-17m fish eye, I am still practicing it but it's also such a fun lens that I love.

Ya, my handle name, it's unique, I have seen it only a couple time that other persons use besides me. Mine comes from "zen" - Japanese/Chinese philophophy - x 2!. + groovy feeling of "yo!" x 2 = zenzenyoyo.

I will play with K10D more and will post more photo!
