IMHO, it would make more sense to re-do the smc FA 50/1.7... cheaper, doesn't eat into the DFA 50/1.4 market so much... and optically I think it is actually better than smc 1.4

That depends. If we're talking on-demand production this can test the loyalty of the customers. Assuming Ricoh has switched to what they call workshop production, this can either trigger cancellation of orders or increase value of the items and shoot Pentax to the Leica world... Time will tell.
However, I rather think that the Monochrome is taking over some - if not all - of the capacity of the workshop of the Matte Black and is now seen as higher priority

Don't want to be overly sceptical but with zero investment, zero R&D and perhaps even zero production it is hard to be in minus once you sell at least a bit of the existing inventory...
Now, I am sure some R&D is going on but we've seen little sign of it for a long time
I also assume all current inventory of Pentax product has been produced some time ago and the only "production" is the workshop-like random colour spraying etc. What makes the products current is the fact that the tooling has not yet been dumped
And zero investment, well, to me, that's what the custom profiles for selected lenses look like...
On the positive side - with this baseline, I am easy to be positively surprised :D

Get it, thank you. Yeah, the viewfinder argument is, I think valid. Even though, of course, there was IR photography before mirrorless came around it gives them advantage now. However, I still think with the on-demand manufacturing they could offer this as a service to those pentaxians who wish to do it. I am not one but I know someone who spent months looking for a boty to convert to IR and was willing to pay anything they asked

All the more reason for it to be done professionally by the manufacturer. I get your point about the mirrorless, I guess we can skip that hope at least for now. But there is a market for IR conversions so if Ricoh has the expertise (and they did it before) why not now that manufacturing is on demand...

I think on-demand production doesn't create significant inventory, but is rather a service as you alluded to. Making it official, using its marketing to market it would make it safer and more widely accessible, I think

Now that Ricoh is moving to the on-demand production, why don't they offer K-1 IR (infrared) , quality IR conversion is a pretty difficult to get and expensive too, they should be able to do it inhouse easily and get rid of some of the K-1 II inventory...
thoughts?

Hopefully the recent UK trade deal with Japan will start making an effect on the photography goods. I think I've seen some info that there's a couple of years until many items potentially including cameras become duty free... would have to look for the source.

There are some claiming that the stabilised image from the lens aids better autofocus results. If true, why not having it?

I have always been saying that they would totally blow the market over if they ever made 67 digital. Super expensive but noone else has such a portfolio of existing good lenses they could plug straight away. Also many many users with existing lenses and a lot of positive experience + nostalgia makes for the best PR

One has to remember that both K-01 and Q were sold at massive discounts in the end as a result of negative publicity and large stock overheads. At one point I remember buying Q and Q10 for some £60 when the starting price for Q was I think £600. Unit sales don't bring a lot of revenue in such sell-offs

I spoke to the largest UK distributor and my go-to shop SRS Microsystems this weekend and they seemed to be quite relaxed about the announcement pointing out that it is Japan specific. They said they'd stock up should it threaten availability globally.

I think it will take a lot of sales of K-3III to put Ricoh imaging into a cash flow state where they would be happy to risk developing another lens of this sort. I have no sales data of the camera nor the 560 to support my assumption but I think developing a new super tele is not on the books now.

Pentax Pixel Shift doesn't multiply resolution. It rather removes Bayer array dependency and delivers absolute sharpness only limited by lens and sensor, less noise and maximum dynamic range

I would expect Ricoh is waiting for some cashflow from sales of K-3III and sales figures to get this going

this doesn't sound like 12 frames per second. if you switch to manual focus and try again you will see a much faster run and the buffer will fill up quicker too

That wasn't a reaction to your particular post, I've counted three bird on sky pictures in this thread already, nothing wrong with the subject, I just wanted to note that the challenge for AF is greater with busy background... no hard feelings, I hope :)

may I perhaps suggest that a distinct object on a clear featureless background isn't the best test for AF tracking reliability? It is when there are structures around the object that may attract the AF attention that it matters most. that's not to say your pictures do not engage the AF or are in any way bad, just a note to the real challenge...
