Thanks for the replies...
I love the 16-85 b/c of its wide range. I want to be able to take in as much of the landscape as possible.
The 18-55 kit and the 18-135 aren't wide enough. =(
I already have the DAL 55-300, but that won't be used as much.

My beloved 16-85 lens has failed! It stopped focusing and when turning it to zoom, it gets stuck in one area. Even when I'm manually focusing, nothing changes.
It's out of warranty b/c I bought it May 2015.
I have a lifetime trip coming up. I will be leaving for New Zealand for 4 weeks on December 26th.
Ah! Should I send it in to get it fixed? But I am afraid if I do that, it's going to cost a ton and it might take too long and I might not get it back in time. It may be better to simply buy a new 16-85 since they now go for a little over $500 new.
A last resort will be to get a Panasonic ZS100 travel camera with a 1 inch sensor... or even just go with my kit lens of 18-55. But that's too drastic.
Does anyone have ideas about the cost to repair a failed 16-85 and how long that takes?

Has anyone ordered from Sunset Electronics via Amazon before? They have a K-5 kit with the 18-55 lens, and other misc goodies for $1043. The best price I've seen for the K-5 with kit lens fulfilled by Amazon is $1110 (doesn't include misc goodies). I'm not very interested in the misc goodies b/c I'm sure they'll be a bunch of crap, but just for the body and kit lens, the price is almost $70 cheaper than through a retailer that's fulfilled by Amazon.
And oh, shipping is free too.
Through their Amazon Reseller ratings, it seems fairly decent. 4.8/5 average with over 5000 orders.

Thanks so much everyone! I have decided to go with the Metz 48. I was leaning towards the Pentax, but after the overwhelming response in favor of the Metz, I have decided to follow suit.
This forum is awesome!

Wow, thanks for all the replies everyone. Thanks to Russel for the very helpful response... especially the pic of the two side by side. I was looking all over the internet for a comparision, but couldn't find it. Thanks so much.
A quick newbie quesiton....
I was learning towards the Metz 48 because it just seemed much more powerful, but I was bummed that it didn't have an auto feautre.
But I had thought it did. It says that it has an autozoom feature. I guess this is different than an auto feature?
I am wanting a flexible flash that I can use very easily.

I wanted a flash for the K7 that was affordable and had wireless and autozoom capabilities.
So far, my search has come to these two... the Pentax AF-360 and the Metz 48 AF. Both are around $225.
The Metz seems to have more features plus it has swivel. However, it looks huge. The Pentax AF-360 has most of those features, minus swivel, but seems to be a LOT smaller and lighter.
I am interested in a flash mostly for better indoor shots. Portability is important to me and so I am leaning towards the Pentax, but the Metz seems to have to many more features, plus it has swivel. However, I have heard that I could always use the wireless mode on the Pentax 360AF as a workaround.
Any thoughts?

I have the Sigma 70-300mm (non APO) and am reasonably happy with it. However, I just got the K7 and there is a rebate for the 55-300mm.
Does Pentax 55-300mm offer a significant quality increase over the Sigma 70-300mm (non APO)? It's about $200 more for it, but if the IQ is far superior, then I would want to upgrade, especially with the rebate in mind.
Also, does anyone know if a TC is available for the Pentax 55-300mm? Preferably one that I could still us AF with?

I upgraded from the K10 to the K7. From all the reports, the IQ from the K20 and K7 aren't very different. From the K10, it was a huge leap.
As for the green mode... I rarely used it on the K10, especially when we were indoors as it was horrible with tungsten lighting. However, with the K7, there is a DRAMATIC difference with the green mode. The green mode is actually useful. Before, I had to do manual white balance for almost all indoor situations, but now AWB for the K7 is accurate for almost all the situations.
However, if you're mostly outdoor photography, not quite sure if it'll make too much of a difference.

I just upgraded from a K10 to a K7. I had the kit lens with the K10 and for most purposes, it sufficed. However, I want to upgrade the lens as well.
I've been eyeing the
sigma 18-50 f2.8 ($419.00),
sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 ($369.00),
pentax 17-70 f4.0 ($509),
pentax 16-45 f4.0 ($340),
pentax 16-50 f2.8 *DA ($690... but $100 rebate from Pentax for buying the K7)
Please let me know other options if there are any.
I am looking to replace the kit lens and look for a lens that's better in low light. I already have the pentax 1.4f 50mm, but am looking for a zoom lens that can handle wide as well. I am looking at the pentax *da, but i don't know if I can justify the high price premium and plus, I have heard it is HUGE... so it might be a pain to carry around. I travel a lot and so it might be a pain to carry around everywhere. I think all the other lenses are much smaller.
Please advise. Thanks!

Hello,
I have a quick question about high shutter speeds. Whenever I put on a very high shutters speeds 1/1000+, then the shot is very dark, even when I try to keep the aperture as high as I can. This is is broad daylight, so I don't know what to do to make it a useable pic.

Hey everyone. I am not a troll! It just happens to be that I visit Pentax Forums and the Pentax dslr forum in the DP review website. I posted up the same news to both of these forums because the two seem to be the most respectable. I do not want in any way to see the Pentax brand suffer. I really dislike Canon and Nikon and think that most people who buy their entry level dslrs only buy so because they're ignorant and don't see how much more they can get with a Pentax dslr.
Sorry everyone if I caused any unneccessary irritation.

So I just read today specs for the Samsung GX30. It's comparable to the K7, but it trumps it in the ways below. Samsung GX30 specifications: built-in GPS, double SD slots, AMOLED display | Photo Rumors
- faster at 6fps
- built in GPS and Wi-Fi
- 3.0 AMOLED tilt and swivel screen
- double SD slots
It's exciting, but now it makes the decision for the K7 all the more difficult! I had a K10, bought a K20 a week ago, but returned it with the intention of getting a K7 after a ton of research.
But now the GX30. Ah! The stress again!

Hey everyone,
I've been researching the DA* 16-50 for a while and came upon a $459 price for the lens at Price Piggy. They have other Pentax lenses for cheap as well.
Has anyone had experience with Price Piggy?

Hello,
I have the Sigma 70-300 (non APO), and it does the job for most of my shots of birds. However, I want a longer reach for an affordable price.
I've seen plenty of crazy zooms that go from 800mm to 2000mm, but these look very cheap and are by no-name companies.
What would be a good solution to get a 400 or 500 mm reach for less than $600? I would prefer that this combo have autofocus.

Hello everyone,
I have a Pentax 50 1.4f prime. The one that costs between $200-250.
I have been reading up on the 16-50 f2.8 DA* and have been very impressed by it. Do you think this DA* 2.8f lens can replace my prime? I have a kit lens for my K10 and this prime, but I'm thinking about selling both of these lenses to upgrade to the 16-50 2.8f DA* to replace both lenses. Can this work? I take lots of indoor photography and thought this DA* lens can relieve my lens changing.

yeah, the k2000 autofocus seems to be highly regarded... that's why it's making this decision difficult.
thanks for the tip on using the flash as an AF assist, i didn't know that option existed. will try it later. but it would be nice to not use and be a nuisance to the people around me. i want to be able to take low light shots and remain as low key as possible.

so gucci, you have a K2000 and are still disappointed with the autofocus speed in low light? have you tried a k7 and compared it?
thanks everyone for the replies! they're really helping. i was leaning towards getting a K20d/k2000 with an SDM lens, but now the K7 is in the lead.
