Just flash dead?

I just picked up my k5 and it wasn't firing. I then noticed it fired fine when the flash was down, but it didn't when it was up. I guess the flash died (with very little use) and that prevents the camera from firing when the flash is up. No flash charging noise either.
May I be missing something? tried all modes, exposure, AF/MF, just a straight forward failure, it seems.

Why is this handheld picture so sharp?

I was used to the miracles of SR, but recently I got the 50-135 and the results are mazing with the k5. You can't be happier as a photographer because these were things you simply couldn't do before.

This was shot handheld with my elbows on a rail at 135mm f2.8 1/30 ISO3200. At 100% you can't tell any movement blur over the iso normal noise and may be some amazingly low loss of contrast for f/2.8 with such a concentrated light source. I could get 1 out of 3 like this. It's really hard to compare with a few years back, because at first seems effortless, but the difference in the game is abysmal.

km vs k2000 cual comprar? - which to buy

K-7 Composition adjust explained

Very Interesting! So this, coupled with bigger image circle lenses (which every 35mm lens is on an APS format sensor), would provide the possibility of shooting two perfectly stitchable photos, the way a t/s lens does. Any idea about the area differential got from the sensor displacement? It could add some lateral megapixels for very good landscape scenes, hardly enough to call it a panorama, though, but great to take advantage of high resolution full frame lenses.
THis could also provide some perspective correction for converging lines in buildings or am I lossing it here?

Well, looks like the idea was not far fetched at all. Or at least, not to Adobe. The lens profile creator is coming!!!

Pentax Abandoned K200D Users...

That's kind of a funny way of seeing things. Pentax "abandoned" my MX a long time ago, I bought it long after that, and I'm extremely happy to have it.
If the camera works as needed, go shoot pictures.

Thanks Phil, doing a little research I found there's a millimetric difference between bodies. I was able to get an ME super case, but looks like it won't fit.

Quite a lame question, but I'd thank any answers. I just got an MX, and I was wondering what would be the correct original soft case. Is it the same as the one for the ME or ME Super bodies?

Well, I was talking in general about distortion and fringing, as to create some lens presets on Photoshop to correct the images when converting them from RAW without trying the sliders each time. I'll try the programs, Thanks for the answers guys!

Extension tubes anyone?

I just bought a set of Marumi auto extension tubes in Ka mount (no AF though). I tried them with several lenses and results with my M 50/1.7 and 135/2.5 look great. The 135 gives better working distance. Just fooling around, I tried them with my K20D built-in flash. Turns out you can get perfect exposure with some very comfortable setups. I found out if I set the 135 at f/11, ISO 100, and the lens to it's minimum focusing distance, using the complete tube set (31+21+13mm), whatever is in focus is properly exposed. You can fiddle with apertures and focus distance, but it works great. Direct flash illumination is not the prettiest for macro work, but the big plus is you can set the top sync speed (180) and with the flash you don't need shake reduction, you can shoot hanheld, perfect pictures as long as you get the focus right, no tripod.
It's probably nothing new to a lot of people, but I was pleasantly surprised.
An example:

Thanks for the answers and Mark, after some more focus adjustments i get pretty much what you describe, excelent center sharpness wide open and all over at f/8. At f/8, using a tripod and with everything in the frame more than 1 meter away the results are amazing. I can't wait to do some landscapes.
I'm impressed with the quality of these digital combos, the IQ starts to demand techniques closer to medium format than 35mm to squeeze every drop of image quality out of them. By the way, the 15mm is pretty close to another lens I used on MF.

I got this lens a week ago and I like it a lot, but I want to comment on some elusive issues and hear what others think about it.
First, the lens doesn't seem extremely sharp at f/4. But I wonder if that has to do with focus accuracy. My k20d seems to produce some small variations on approaching focus from close or infinity positions, enough to impact on sharpness. May be the small maximum aperture in such a wide lens taxes autofocus as much as it does my eyes on manual focus. Some results appear very sharp, some not quite, things look good with a +5 focus adjustment at infinity, but that's the other issue, that amount of correction is completely off for close focus. All this at a very finicky level, because everything looks more or less in focus, but I think getting critical focus right makes this a great lens for landscape photography, for example.

Thanks for the interest Matt, I'll try to post pictures of the work. About your lens, ,ecause of the huge focal length, if I get it right you should be able to go for very small apertures before diffraction kicks in, so you results might even keep improving past f/32 (I don't know if the lens gets there though).

Interesting thread. I was out of the digital slr game since recently I bought a K20D, but I was a Canon FD shooter before. Since the FD lenses are orphaned and I had a beat up but optically perfect 300/4 Canon lens that wouldn't sell for much I asked a good repairman to change the mount to K to work in preset mode. I'm getting it in the next days. Will post some pictures.

Firmware and lenses

Fogel, you think older lenses working seamlessly wouldn't impact on new lens sales? May be for brands that invest heavily into zooms that's more true, but for the Pentax prime line it is a problem.
Zooms have improved A LOT so older ones will not compete. But good primes from the seventies on in many cases get as close in IQ to present ones as to be undistinguishable by the average guy. And they are better built than anything today, another selling point of the Limited lineup. If you can get everything but autofocus at a tenth of the cost, with products widely available, easily repairable, it will have an impact.

Fogel, it would be as bit as accurate as with the new lenses. I don't think those give the camera any magical info besides that.
Lowell, yep, that would be another way of fixing that. I only thought if you switch between a few lenses a lot in the field presets would be faster. Anyway, that's only software, it's a very simple path to making everybody happy.

On "the one they should do", that 's what i was talking about Lowell. Basically you'd get the same metering as with any other lens. You'd have to stick to stopped down metering but it would be perfectly accurate through the whole range.
I just think of a different menu when you turn the camera on with a non A lens attached: a user generated preset list where you see your 135/2.5, choose it, and there, the camera knows just that, it's 135mm and f/2.5. And just that is plenty. You just preload all your manual lenses and everything would be a breeze.

I guess backwards compatibility is a good marketing concept but just as long as it doesn't cannibalize too much on new lens sales. There are so many lenses in K mount that making extreme compatibility efforts would only lead to less new lens sales. I guess it depends on consumer profile. New photographers who buy Pentax are more into learning how things work than Canon or Nikon customers, I think. So It's not an easy market to please, and one able to work around having to always buy the latest newest thing, if given the chance.

Thanks guys. I wouldn't ask as much as a change in the mount works, but accepting the stopped down mettering is the only way to go, making manual input of the lens max aperture available would be just a software thing. The camera calculations for the focusing screen's light transmitting properties is something done once, then, with the max app input every lens would behave properly. I think it would be a minor software thing, It just makes you wonder why not doing that. It would make an enormous amount of lenses work almost seamlessly.

I'm curious about this, regarding the meter issues with different dslrs and old lenses (or adapted lenses of any kind). Most of the problems derive from the camera having to use stopped down mettering because of the lack of maximum lens aperture info. Since the focusing screens light transmitting properties are not lineal as the apertures vary you have those deviations from correct exposure.
My question is, as you can dial the lens length in for SRV with manual lenses, couldn't a firmware update provide for a way to throw in all the other info (max aperture alone would account for all the mettering issues, I believe)?
Better than that, you could have user-created presets for each lens, you would just have to select them manually instead of the camera recognizing them automatically as it does with newer lenses. This all sounds quite simple and feasible to me, unless i'm missing something here, what do you think?

K7 White Balance Problems

I'm not sure about the K7, but the K20 has an WB auto override. If it's on, I believe the camera will apply auto WB when it deems the default setting "incorrect" even if you are on a fixed white balance setting like flash or tungsten. May be you should look for that in the custom menu and deactivate it to see if that gives you consistent WB.
