I just received my 1st telephoto lens and decided to test its ability(I ordered from amazon and the box was CRUSHED). I think the lens is a good copy though and somehow undamaged, what do you think? These are all shot at 300mm from about 200-500, 5.8 - 7 or so, iso 200. handheld on jpeg mode with no touchup at all. If anyone notices anything to be concerned about other than I should be shooting in raw, please let me know, thanks!

No it is not suppose to be loose, but if it doesnt effect your images then I guess dont worry unless your a perfectionist and can exchange it.

Hi everyone, thank you all for trying to help. I actually decided to bring the lens back. They gave me a replacement 31mm lens and it actually lookes slightly different physically, lens caps and all. I tested it out and I am VERY happy! Here are a few sample images converted from raw to jpeg. I really like this lens now.

Maybe I am not being clear, it is stuck on 1.8 unless i put it into full manual mode. Auto doenst seem to focus at all. For that I would just have gotten an older lens cheaper. Anyway thanks for trying to help.

So its definitely not the lens then? In full green mode its chosing these settings, auto everything. Also when I manually try to focus it i feel that the ring wont let me turn it enough, it only goes so far then stops...i guess this is normal , sorry this is my first time trying to manually focus a lens.

my camera is a k20d. I can manually turn the focus ring, it is pretty smooth but not loose. The first pic with the kit lens was not a flash shot.SR was on for all shots. Most of the shots were taken in full green mode, the camera chose those settings for some reason. I manually change them but just cant get it focused. Maybe its me but it seems 10000 times harder to focus the 31mm than my kit lens

Hello, I finally recieved my lens pentax 31mm f1.8 limited lens today and was very excited, until I got to testing it. I cant seem to get it to focus, even autofocus seems to come out flurry. Possibly 1 in 10 shots come in clear, but not better than my kit lens 18-55 al 2. I really enjoy the low light ability and the focal length is nice for what i need it for....except i cant focus even manually its hard. Is it just me??? Or is this lens faulty. I posted 5 pictures, the first is with my kit lens, the other 4 are from the 31mm. Thanks much for helping.
ps these are the best of the shots i took with the 31mm

I got the 31mm because I thought the effective range would be about 46.5 for portraits. I actually got the 31mm in the mail today, I will open up another thread with some samples, I would like some comments if the lens is a good copy :) Still not sure I will keep it.

Ok, so not much of a difference between the picture quality of the 31mm f1.8 and the 35mm f2 on a digital(im using the k20d)? So very little picture quality difference just the 31mm is abit faster ?If that is the case I can definitely get a 12-24mm (or maybe the 14mm) along with it for the same price.

Hello, I would like some advice on what lens would be best for my needs. I want a lens that can be used for indoor low light photography, portraits as well as some landscape( I would be making panoramics using autopano). The SMC Pentax-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited seemed to be able to do all of these well, but maybe i am wrong??? At $900 i dont want to be. I bought this from b and h so i can return it if need be. For the same price i could get the , SMC Pentax-FA 35mm F2 AL for indoor /portrait as well as the Pentax DA 12-24mm f/4 AL ED IF for panos and lanscape. Which is the way to go??? Thanks! -Ron

1. Install lens.
2. Turn on camera
3. Confirm focal length of lens (85)
4. Go to pp 129 of Manual. Get description of the various settings available and procedures for selection.
5. Set "M" mode
6. Determine appropriate DOF and set aperture of lens
7. Manually focus on subject
8. Press green button to set shutter speed to fit lens setting.
9. Press shutter button to take photos
This is what I read. Is there a different way instead of pressing the green button to automatically set the shudder speed, to set both shudder and apature myself?

Hello, I was wondering if and how I can shoot using my SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/1.7 on my k20d. I know to put it in manual mode, but can I adjust the shudder speed and apature manually as well? I dont want the shudder speed chosen automatically. Thank you

I was wondering if I need anything special to use A mount lenses on my k20d. I am thinking of getting the fixed A mount 50mm 1.4 or 1.2 over the 50mm FA 1.4. I dont mind the manuel focus as long is its optically equal.

Would this be a better solution than a raynox? A Kenko 1.5X Teleplus - 4 Element DG Auto Focus? I see alot of macro pics taken with one of these on it.

Raynox 150 with the DA 55-300mm, I think I will go with this option. The iq on imtheguy's post of the black widow was great, really nice shot, how close were you from the spider? I guess the reynox 250 would be alittle overkill, though I could get it and just lower the zoom to compensate.

so basically i would zoom out to 300mm and use either the reynolds or an apochromatic lens? Would the above pentax 55-300 lens that I mentioned do well for me zoomed to 300mm and still be in focus? I want to take macro's of plantlife mostly but also of insects ect.
