A little disappointed and uncertain, but certainly not afraid.
A 'FUD generator' - by citing Ricoh's own announcements and media?

This sort of showcasing is what I meant: product stories of new K mount APS-C DSLR flagship camera.
True. Lots of ambiguities. But the planned camera was unveiled in September 2019 and everywhere Ricoh were already saying stuff like: "Next year, we will launch a flagship APS-C camera." which they have repeated many times since. Maybe not a month or day, but they have been emphatic about the year.

Thank you for your concern.
Great.
But today - in the real world I think we all share - if the K-new was being sold in store anywhere at the moment, discussions and speculations like this thread simply would not exist. So people chat about why Ricoh showcase it, but don't ship it yet.
Labelling this as dangerous anti-Pentax Thought Crime is depressing to see.

Not quite. My main point is simply that promising projects get can indeed get cancelled, and that it has happened before in the corporate history of Pentax (the MZ-D). So no need to be shocked.
And the MZ-D, while not directly comparable to the K-new, is a case study into how decision makers think, and how new technologies and markets evolve within the camera industry. Probably the fundamentals haven't changed much from 2002: camera making in 2020 remains a business that aims to be profitable, and investments in new technology today can be very risky even for companies with deep experience in the sector.
Thanks for your comments. I've learnt a lot. It's a pity how the MZ-D story panned out. ---------- Post added 2020-10-19 at 12:03 PM ----------
I can see how that could be a real problem. There's only so much you can achieve with a Zoom meeting. Often you will still need 'boots on the ground'.
Probably helps explains why my 70-210 order is gonna take two months at least to fulfil.

K-new is probably just one project in their pipeline. I doubt it's so critical to them that if they cancel it, Ricoh Imaging dies.
I agree that it would be logical to expect that K-new would build on previous Pentax design and production experience.
It's not impossible that the K-new might be able to do both: continue tradition but also as you say, 'venture into new territory', even though that may involve risk to deadlines and budgets.

Who really knows. They bailed before bringing a product to market.
Just like the MZ-D, maybe the available chip technology can't deliver the performance the K-new technicians envisaged in their camera, maybe the bean-counters at HQ can't see the camera ever making money. All speculative, but not without precedent.

The MZ-D also went through a hype cycle of public updates and displays before the project was quietly aborted. It's not unknown in Pentax.

Delay after delay could also mean the project has been quietly cancelled. :(
Always a possibility. It's tough in the camera business atm.

Yes. I'm getting pretty bored with this game.
I used to be interested in the K-new, but these Pentax suggestions and non-events have been dragging on for so long that I've lost interest in whatever they are doing or planning with the K-new or anything else.

They have to deliver K-new before I will believe anything about them doing another camera.

I think the chance of a redesign are zero at this stage. Ricoh have made their plans clear.
The best one could hope for might be a K-new II with a flippy screen a year after the K-new v1 gets released.
Or shortly after v1 gets released Ricoh could sell people a 'K-new Option Kit', where you send your K-new v1 in and for $500 they do a flippy screen upgrade for you and send you back a K-new with a flippy screen and a new 'v II' label, similar to how the K-1 II upgrade worked.

Cute Ricoh brand ambassador. Looks like a boy-band member.
More aesthetic than kenspo, I guess. :)

I remember fondly my first NEX - an NEX-5. Great little 14MB camera, fast shutter, excellent panorama mode built-in. My first flippy screen too.
It died somewhere in the hands of a relative of mine, but I've had several others since.
Sony has been continuously developing the NEX line since about 2010, so it is not accurate to say they never sold very well. The current AXXX mirrorless bodies are just new name NEX's, and together they've sold millions.

Actually, the in-exorable direction of things has been that any deficiency in current technology needs MORE technology, so that even less skill and knowledge is required.
AF went from detecting contrast, to detecting & tracking movement, to face detection & face logging, to eye-detection, now even animal eye detection is a thing. All great, but very deliberately de-skilling photography. Same with light metering.

OK, looks like the new DSLR is the K-GR then.
No one would have guessed that one, but it could work.

Depending what sort of flash you want. If you want on-camera speedlight HSS on Pentax there's Pentax, Metz, Godox TT350P, Godox V860II (F/O/C with firmware update and X system trigger), and Shanny flashes you can buy. If you want monolights there's Priolite, GoDox/Flashpoint, maybe a few others I've forgotten about.
And using Cactus v6 II you can mix up a system using a variety of other third-party flashes too that Cactus v6 II triggers may support - and which may allow HSS. (But I'm not a Cactus expert).

An AI driven animation, I bet. Showcasing Ricoh's other research, as well as selling K-new.
Or it could be Rice High. Or Kai W.

The return of sensor SR to video (K-5, K-x have it, but dropped since then) would be welcome. Other brands have it now, but I think Pentax did it first.

I believe that for HSS on Pentax to work reliably, you need hardware that can talk the P-TTL flash protocol - directly or indirectly (eg via a pass-through product like a Cactus v6 trigger).

And at the bottom of that range at B&H fall a few nice full-frame cameras like the D750 ($1496) and mirrorless FF like the Canon RP ($999)...

The fact that they are not making this the subject of their first or second 'Product Stories' suggests to me that AF wasn't the major focus of the K-new. So far it's all been about viewfinder and ergonomics.
AF might be Story #10, I fear, ahead of Story #18 about video.

Agreed. Unless Ricoh goes down the Instax or Lomo path, I guess, which will be a huge waste of effort.
Unless I am wrong, Canon has never bothered to make anything of film nostalgia in their product marketing. They were dominant in 35mm film and have just as much 'nostalgia' potential stored up as Pentax, I think. But they moved on.

Certainly does. But Pentax film camera production stopped over 15 years ago, circa 2005 ... Selling nostalgia may get in the way of selling your modern gear.
Hence when you do a Pentax related search on Google you might see this confidence inspiring message: "Are Pentax cameras still made?" |
