I have done some long exposure work with the Kit 18-55 and have had fantastic results. I think with proper technique you will find it is a great lens for night photography...

the Sigma 17-50 is an incredible lens and I have decided it is my new walk-around lens. The IQ is excellent and the build quality of the EX lenses is fantastic. I hate paying for OS but it seems that Sigma is headed in that direction for all of it's lenses. Makes sense from a production perspective, but it is annoying to buy redundant stabilization.

It's fast focusing in good lighting, low light it struggles.

Yeah I probably wouldn't put that on my camera or the triggers...Not sure what your options are with that strobe other than forcing true manual flash mode on your camera.

It will work with any hotshoe flash out of the box. they have optional cables for lights that need it. The trigger is actually radio controlled, so it will send an RF signal out and trigger the flash remotely. the transmitter slide into the hotshot on the K-r and triggers when the shutter is released. You do have to shoot in M mode on the K-r but a couple test shots and you should be able to get the exposure right on.

on the nose!

You can also use get a set of cheap radio transmitters.

I have the Cowboy Studio $28 set and they work really great.

Wikipedia has a great entry on crop factor. Basically, the FOV doesn't change just how much image is exposed.

isn't RAW RAW, meaning that it is not the camera messing up the white point it's the application creating the preview that is applying it's own white balance processing?

Thanks all. Had a great time, the island is absolutely beautiful. Had a chance to climb the The Gros Piton, 2500 ft (771m) straight up. One of the most grueling but amazing climbs I have ever had. On the way down we had an amazing tropical downpour that lasted the entire 2 hour trek down. By the time we reached the bottom, there was a small river running down the trail.

if you set the on-board flash to only act as a trigger (in the settings menu), it should have almost no impact on exposure unless you are doing macro photography. I use it all the time for portraits and never have a problem with the exposure.
