New XS lens has strange groove/hole at K-mount

The small size might also be a challenge in assembly. The hole might play a role in connecting the actuator arm with the aperture mechanism.

Who is moving from dslr to mirrorless?

I'll go Mirrorless at some stage. Mostly it will be for the flash sync speed. A shorter registration distance would give me some lens flexibility too. Although I like the size and speed of smaller format lenses, I'm reluctant to go beyond m43, as there's not at much depth of field control.

Last week, my "will work for food" attitude to photography yielded roast chicken followed by apple and rhubarb crumble for me, and this shot for the proud parents.

Thanks for your interest.
I've been using it with just the two lugs for more than a year, without a hitch. They only have to hold the slight pressure from the battery springs.

Items for Sale
  1. AF-540FGZ Flash
This is a powerful flash with all of the AF, zoom, Wireless and PTTL features in the Pentax arsenal. This copy is fully functional and in fair-good condition There are minor scuff marks on the back of the head (just above the 540) and on the front diffuser. As shown in the photos, the battery compartment is missing one of the 3 locking lugs, which means that the door sits just a little proud on the head side (not an uncommon fault).

The foot is in excellent shape and the bounce/diffuser cards work perfectly.

Ships with the original box and paperwork.
    Price:$350

  2. Hot Shoe Adapter F
This is great for taking the flash off-camera and/or mounting another flash or trigger. I use this extensively when wireless mode doesn't suit - using the camera remote, or working in conjunction with other slaves. The unit is in good condition
    Price:$50

  3. Extension Cord F5P
Screws into the side of the Adapter F and the flash unit. This is a coiled cord stretching to 1m. The cord is in good condition
    Price:$30

Asking Price
400 USD/AUD
total. Preference given to selling the 3 items as a lot.

SMC Pentax-M 100mm F4 Macro

Asking Price
95 USD/AUD

Item Description
This is a great lens for portraits and closeup work. Its extremely solidly built and very well regarded for both sharpness and bokeh.

This copy has been well used and shows plenty of brassing - especially around the aperture ring. Thankfully, the glass is in great shape, as is the mount. The focusing action is firm and smooth.

Ricoh "will plug a gap in the market" in 2012

Problem being that 250 is only 7x magnification of the APS-C normal field of view. Not exactly "super-zoom" (if you're after that kind of thing). Big magnification and zoom range are an inherent strength of small formats, just like wide angle and narrow depth of field are a natural fit for large formats.

K-mount mirrorless still in the works.

I don't envisage an integral tube, I see it as an after-market accessory.

We're really talking about a new mount specification that happens to share the K flange and contacts. Call it KAF4, flat K, or whatever. Lenses for it would not have heavily recessed optics. Mounting on your legacy K camera would give you a longer focal length that would only close focus (though pentax could add legacy focus to infinity at the design stage).

. . .and likely not your current one - 11, 21, 31 or 36mm (or 100:lol:).

Consider that the K mount Flange Focal Distance is 45.46 mm and that Sony probably did their optics homework to get the NEX E mount down to 18mm and still covering the APSC circle OK.

Expect a tube at around 28mm.

Face it, most people toting DSLRs would be much better off with a digicam. They "want to get into photography a bit more", but don't graduate past the kit lens and auto mode. No reading manuals; No understanding of metering modes, exposure compensation, shutters or apertures; No lurking on photography forums. They instinctively hold a camera at arms length. They're not particularly price sensitive and they value form over function.

This is a camera aimed at them.

If you're all about IQ and shallow depth of field, move on to another part of the forum, or indulge in the pointless flagellation fest until the K-mount shooter is announced in August.

There are, however, a few "serious" photographers for whom this camera will be of interest.
  • Strobists (sync to 1/2000)

  • Macro-photographers (small format= big depth of field)

  • Birders/digi-scopers (great crop zoom and the possibility of mounting directly to a spotting scope with little addition to the weight of your kit)

Bright Field Dark Field

Honing my bright field/ dark field skills. The extreme low contrast resolution of this technique leads me to conclude that I also need to work on my glass cleaning skills.

Strobist: one AF-540 FG-Z @ half power, behind the gobo/black background, pointed away from the glass.

I evened out the tones using a graND filter.

PP was limited to adjusting levels and removing some dust

New lens: SMC Pentax 85/2.2 Soft

It's a joy of a lens to use isn't it!

I've found 2.2 to be too soft for my taste, but fine from there until it sharpens up completely at 5.6.

Keep in mind that the stiffness in the aperture ring is also part of the design - it's infinitely variable between stops, so you can get the softness "just so". As a non-A lens, it's wysiwyg for softness and metering. I use the aperture clicks as a guide for strobe calculations more than anything else.

Water (drop) photography - Tips and/or tricks?
Posted By openyourap
Replies: 13

I've not done drop photography in a few years (must update my Avatar shot), but it's fun. Tips from my experience:

nb: Lay the whole setup on a towel and have plenty more towels on-hand, should catastrophe strike.

Getting the drop stream is relatively easy, requiring a freezer bag with just a 1/2 cup or so of water, a couple of clothes pegs to suspend it, and a pin to make a hole in the bottom. Get it wrong and you can swap bags. Get it right and you can add water.

A dark colored tray will provide better reflections.

Camera on a tripod with remote release.

A longer focal length lens will give you more working distance, keeping the face of the lens dry. Extension tubes can help to get the magnification.

If you don't have the right color gels for your flash, you can bounce it off a suitable color. Lighting is from the rear or side. Cover the flash in a zip-lock or freezer bag.

Because the lighting is provided by the flash, don't get too hung up on shutter speed, just shoot manual, and adjust the exposure using aperture.

You're going to have to re-dehydrate your rice every now and then, just as you would the silica gel.
North Vietnamese Photogs apparently used to do this by dry frying it every few days.

I'd be concerned that rice dust=fungus food, but it's gotta be less bad than salt.

I use the predecessor model. Overall, it is a great price/performance tripod. I'm a fan of the carry-on only travel style, and it's the most tripod I can get on-board.

You should be fine with the lenses mentioned. As lenses approach 2lb/1kg, the torque becomes too much for the ball joint.

There is flex in the legs, particularly when extended. This makes it no good for windy conditions. At full extension and 300mm zoom, you might also see some very minor lingering shudder from the mirror lock up after 3 seconds. I sometimes use mine as a 16x binocular mount, and it takes forever (8-10 seconds) to settle from a tap on one of the struts.

Going to Vietnam in summer: precautions to take in humidity

Your backpack is weather-proof, not humidity proof, which is key. Earlier suggestions for ziplock bags for your lenses, with desiccant in each are spot on. All the better if you get one big enough for your camera and whatever lens it has on it. I'd minimize my kit to 2 or 3 lenses only - it's hard to find places clean and dry enough to change anyway.

If you're going to be in and out of small boats, you might consider a 15-20 liter dry bag. I've bought a couple of "ocean packs" in the region for about $20. An extra $20 will get you a "Cushion Pad" insert set (cylinder, end caps and divider).
