While I wouldn't miss any of those features, I'm sure it will cost about a million bucks (roughly), so I'm out. In fact, I'm trying to resist buying anything at all. Going full frame most likely results in needing new lenses and I'm not sure if I can justify these expenses. But I'm also still keeping my eyes open for a bargain - be it Pentax, Nikon or even Sony. We'll see for how long I'll succeed in resisting...

Certainly intriguing. Since the A7 system emerged, I've been very interested in it. Only handled an A7 once, though. But this is more of a if-money-was-of-no-concern-thing. What I meant was primarily the access to the whole Sigma Art line and the Tamron lenses that Pentax users don't get.
Not necessarily. I've seen a Nikon D810 for around 1600€. The lowest price for the K-1 still is 1800€. In most shops it's 2000€ and up.
The chance to find my current lenses or similar ones for another system for a lower price than what I paid is there.
I'm still very conflicted...

As I said, tracking-AF is not that important. If AF-S is reliable, that's enough.
I've seen the test results and the articles on its DR. Both are on a very high level. Very impressive indeed.
Pixel shift is lacking software support. If I can't use it with Lightroom, I'll probably not use it that often. Kinda lame.

You forget that I'm not located in the US. As far as I know there is no rental company in Germany that even carries Pentax.
It's both: the K-5's quirks (constant misfocusing and mismetering) and restraints annoy me and I've been lusting after FF since the beginning of time. But it's more of a want than a need. I still take pictures with my K-5 and most of the time I don't feel like it's crippling me.

You are right. I don't need all those other ways.
A more capable flash metering system sure would be nice, too. But for now, I could work around it using manual mode. This isn't top priority.
I will look out for a Nikon D810 anyways. If I find one that's considerably cheaper, then it shall be a Nikon. But I doubt it.

(Better) AF-tracking would be nice, but there were only a few times were I wished I had it. I did shoot sports only a very few times in the last years. Most of what I do is rather static.
The video mode on my K-5 is really weak, and having all those features Nikon or Canon offer would help, but video mode isn't that important to me. Maybe that will change, but for now a higher framerate and better video controls would be sth. I can work with.
Of course I thought about buying a K-3II. It's easily 1000$/€ cheaper but I know that it wouldn't satisfy me. I forgot what it was, but I've read a lot since the K-1 came out (and before). And there were reasons why the K-3II just didn't convince me as an upgrade.
I'll try to get my hands on a Nikon for testing.

Yes, I wasn't clear on that. Abondoned buildings mostly. Often including cellars. AF hasn't let me down in these situations. I should have been more precide. The misfocusing mostly happens on the 50mm, with the 28 and 105 following. With the 50 the camera locks focus but is way off what I wanted to hit. Same occasionally happens with the 28mm. With the 105, I sometimes get no focus confirmation and all. It just hunts. Even when there is plenty of light and lots of contrast. The 16-50 and 70-200 are reliable in this respect. I have no idea why.
Reading that the K-5 is particularly bad in flash metering accuarcy is somewhat soothing.

Pentax is doomed! I'm essentially investing in a corpse. The question here is: is the Pentax community necrophilic?
In general:
This is less of a question which system is better for me - since both Pentax and Nikon offer what I want - but rather which one can be had for less. Even though Pentax has catched up in terms of pricing (upwards), As far as I know every other system is more expensive. But things are a little different on the used market. I guess I'm already in too deep the Pentax system with my 6 lenses and 2 flashes to rebuy them for another system. Do you agree?
Ok, assuming that I've made my choice and pick the K-1: what about my lenses? Pixel pitch isn't that much of an issue but there are always the corners.

Funnily I use focus and recompose in more than 90% of the time. Since my first camera which was the GX-20 I've been focusing with a split focusing screen. Focus and recompose is the most natural way to use it. Besides, the off-center focus points work slower on my K-5 (only the center one offers f/2.8 metering as far as I remember) so there is no real benefit to using them.
So despite my younger age, I'm familiar with these techniques. And I have already checked if there are screens for the K-1 available. I have owned some full manual lenses but replaced them over time. Except for the SMC 50 1.4.
As I said I'm pretty sure I only like the Fuji system because it looks so nice. It can't keep up with the K-1...
I neither need support nor training. I only care about the lens selection and flash system, with the flash system being a nice-to-have.
I'd prefer not to switch but it's a matter of cost.

I've read a lot about the A7 and the possibility to adapt lenses. And from what I've read, this would be the worst choice. Even if there was an adapter that allowed for Pentax lenses to use AF, it would be painfully slow. For Pentax users, using their lenses on Sony bodies only makles sense when it's full manual lenses.
Things are different for adapted Canon or Nikon lenses. But apart from the great AF coverage there is no reason to not just get a Canon or Nikon, then.

Oh, I wasn't aware AF points on Nikon bodies aren't spread wider.
I'm sure I'd love the D850, but as I said, cost is an issue. The reason why I included both Nikons is that they're available used and hence cheaper than the K-1. Otherwise they are way out of my scope.
I expected someone to mention the KP. I just don't like its design. I know that if I were to buy the KP I'd always feel like I should have just gotten the K-1.
I didn't mention that I don't need FF, but I realllly want it.
Let me rephrase my question: what would I gain getting the Nikon D750/D8X0 over the K-1 apart from AF capability and lens accessability?

Hello, everyone.
First of all: I'm aware I'm not the 1st one to ask. I tried the forum search but for some reason it returned no hits (might be my Firefox). Links are apprechiated.
As for my situation: I currently have a K-5 and while the image quality is still good enough, there are some things that annoy me too often.
- Even though I use AF-S in ~95% of time, it misses every now and then - even in bright light. AF-C is pretty much useless.
- I shoot concerts and lost places occasionally. Both are mostly dim. ISO 4500 is my limit in terms of noise.
- Pushing shadows only works up to 3EV at ISO 160. Afterwards, noise becomes too apparent. Higher exposure latitude and DR would be very welcome.
- PTT-L sucks. Metering with Metz 48 AF-1 is very inconsistent.
- I'm already using the viewfinder loupe O-ME 53, but I'm still wishing for a bigger viewfinder.
What's bugging me about the K-1 is its poor AF coverage, area-wise. So is there any camera with a FF-sized viewfinder, reliable and fast AF, that works down to -2 or 3EV, is robust, has great DR and offers access to a wide line of lenses (especially Sigma and Tamron)?
I'm really digging the Fuji system, but I guess that's more about its aesthetic appeal than the system itself. Apparently its AF system is rather slow and lens compability is limited to Fuji. DR seems to be mediocre. The Sony A7(II) offers the DR but very few affordable lenses. Which leaves the Nikon D750 or D800/D810.
What's true for every system switch is the need to rebuy everything, which brings me to the 2nd part of my question.
Which of these lenses would be good enough for a (36mp) FF camera?
Lenses being:
Sigma 28mm 1:1.8 EX DG Macro
Sigma 50mm 1:1.4 DG HSM
Sigma 105mm 1:2.8 DG Macro (no doubt about this one)
Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 II Macro HSM
I also have the DA* 16-50mm and the Samyang 8mm 1:3.5, both of which will have to get replaced.
Cost is of course an issue. It's the biggest one. I think I know the answer to my 1st question, I'm mostly seeking assurance here.

The rubber hood I use on the 16-50 unfortunately vignettes slightly at 16mm.
Else this thing is perfect.

Like always, Amazon surprised my positively.
Camera arrived today instead of tomorrow like they claimed and I can't find the flaws I should get (signs of use on the front).
Battery is charging but I still really like the new grip.
Mode dial lock is a pita, though.
Serial number is 398xxxx
More soon.

Pentax being Pentax and not Canon or Nikon your chances are rather small to find a bayonet style hood.
There are some petal bayonet mounted hoods but until now I haven't seen one that wasn't rediculously short.
Apart from 3-step rubber hoods that are hideous and screw-mount I wouldn't have too much hope.
I'm in the same boat - I lost my 16-50's hood some months ago. The original is either not available or so expensive it's not funny anymore.

Yes, they are several of them. Register distance is greater with Pentax so if I'm right there are even adapters without corrective elements in them. So no optical degredation.
No surprise: coupling is merely mechanical so you lose everything modern lenses bring. No AF of course and no auto aperture.
Can't do it now so just search for adapters...

Hmmm yeah, just ordered a used K5 through Amazon.
Because youknow, as a student you just have masses of cash flying around.
We'll see if I get one that is not flawed...
I know my luck but there is nothing to do but wait.

Tethering would be a nice solution if it would work. Samsung sucks even more than Pentax in this respect. You can't tether them.
What you say sounds realistic. Not really a big damage but hard to spot or to repair. I suspect this is a financial total loss. I wanted to retire it like I said. But I originally thought I could get some money back - because before yesterday it was in great shape...
And of course it's as out of waranty as it's technically possible.

I have the GX10's service manual so I know how it looks inside. I'm not to warried about taking it apart. It's more the fact that I had to rebuilt it. Taking something apart is always easier (see nuclear fusion).
Info: 1 € = 1.4434 US$
But I would rate it more like 1:1. At least camera prices indicate this.

Yes, I did.
It starts with the formatting process and then falls back to the Memory card error screen.

Yeah, that's also my assumption. But I don't think I can fix it myself.

Thats exactly what I expect to happen which makes it so bitter. Nothing is really totaled but fixing it isn't profitable.
EDIT:
Additional info that shouldn't surprise anyone: The memory card LED on the back of the camera doesn't light up when a card is fit in.
This doesn't help does it?

No. Not like that.
The Memory card error only appears with a card actually in the slot.
Without a card all I get is "no card in camera" - just like it should be.
I can even take pictures then - they just can't be saved or reviewed for logical reasons.
I have 2 cards. Same result. I can totally rule out card failure.
1) No. I'm not to bad with mechanics but electronics are evil. I don't like them, they don't like me.
Probably I could even fix it but I don't want to risk more than what is already "broken".
2) Don't know a local repair shop yet - I'm not even sure if something like this exists...but if you say so I guess you're right.
3) Sigh...
I'm pretty sure they would offer me to do it fo several hundres dollars (I sense up to 300) while needing at least 3 weeks to get it done.
I don't know: Maybe I just want to be encouraged to buy a K5...
It has to happen someday. It just shouldn't happen now when it's still so expensive.

Short story:
Camera fell, top body plate cracked.
Something inside came loose or is broken now so it can't read memory cards anymore.
Result: I can't save or review pictures.
What can I do?

Longer story:
For some incomprehensible reasons the karabiner (you know, these hooks that snap into lock position) somehow opened itself letting my camera (Samsung GX20) hit the ground from about 70cm/2.3ft.
After-math:
Top plate cracked forcing the top display cover to pop out.
The camera was hanging upside-down when hitting the ground - impact was next to the AE-L button.
After putting it back together - forcing the cracked plate back in and "reassembling" the top display cover it didn't look too bad.
Fortunately the lens took no damage.
But since then the memory card can't be used/read leaving me with "Mermory card error" on the main display.
I'm sure the card is fine so it must be something on the inside of the camera that came loose or even broke (unlikely). Probably just some contacts next to the memory card slot.
Electronics and mechanics are fine otherwise. Without a memory card everything works just fine. Shutter works, AF is okay, display is unharmed and all setting can be accessed. Just like it should.

I need a working camera until friday next week.
It's not like my life depends on my camera but I can't live without one and can't wait several weeks until it would be fixed by a repair center.
From what I've read Samsung's customer service is horrible and I'm quite sure the issue I have could be fixed easily (if it's just a loosened/broken contact).
So...well, I wanted the K5 since it's out and I wanted to retire the GX20 this year anyway but the K5 still is about 1100€ (+ battery grip).
I'd go for a used K5 immidiately but they simply are next to none.

Just to inform you: you were right. I can get bellows cheaper than $60. There were 3 items that selled for ~$40. Will keep it in mind.
Lens hoods arrived but step-down rings didn't so I can't try anything yet.
Also: a website I totally forgot about www.peterforsell.com
Essentially the same newarts wrote but summarized and nicer to look at (formulas just don't look that pretty in normal text format).

Abbazz,
for a price of $2,25 each, these microscope lenses are no hard decision.
Don't know if I can get something like these around here, too.
I have a ringflash, normal flash and bright lamp so I could come up with something.
What I meant is that getting a professional macro lens and using it with an amateurish lighting would be a waste.

I have no idea how you can find accesories so cheap. The cheapest bellows I could find is more than $65 - without lens.
Unfortunately I don't know any thrift shop to look at.
Flat field focusing is another reason why I want a large format lens.
They may have curvature but on APS-C it won't be visible I guess.
I just bought a focusing rail so I won't need a 2 geared bellows unit but I'd still prefer one.
I have good lenses so that's not the issue, either.

Also have the Samyang.
Love everything about it except its close focus ability. For a fisheye lens 30cm MFD is very far.
But it's sharp, amazingly flare resistant and delivers very high saturation (could be even oversaturated).
Awesome lens.

Unsurprisingly, every MF lens except the Kiev/Pentacon Six that would qualify is not necessarily out of my budget but out of reasonable cost level.
The lens you linked seems optimal - pretty short in FL but long in register distance.
Like I said before this could double as a tilt-shift lens, too. 43mm left to get it done.
Which is why I would rule out everything smaller than MF - if I invest in a lens I don't really need it should offer another use, too.
Although $30 for the Adaptall is near to nothing...
For now I won't get another lens hood acting as extension tube - first I have to see how this works out. If it does well and I feel the urge to do it further I can still get a bellow + some other lens.
Give me another 3-4 weeks (don't know how long shipping from China will take) to test my new stuff and then I can tell more.
Bellows + MF lens still looks like a wonderful solution.

No doubt this dedicated super-macro lens will outperform every workaround I can come off with.
But as I said I'm not even sure right now how much investment is reasonable for something I just *want*.
$300+ is definitely too much. Also I don't have a sufficient tripod or lighting set-up yet to get everything from such a lens.
The macrolens website is also great but doesn't really help if you don't know what you are looking for.
I know Pentax and maybe Nikon lenses - but nothing outside of 35mm lenses.

For me your tests are realistic. I oten shoot near MFD at near wide open. So the worst you could do. I'd even say most of my subjects are less than 3m/10ft away.
kenyee, yes, distortion is very bad on the 16-50 - the edges are almos unuseable when you need them for group shots - especially when you get close.
Surprsingly, the Samyang 8mm fisheye distorts less in the extreme borders when positioning your subject carefully.
