Help! Bizarre problem with my beloved K5!

Thanks guys. I don't have access to a spare battery just right now, but will give it a go when I return back home after the holiday break tomorrow. Failing that, I'm pretty much resigned to sending it back for repair - hopefully it's still under warranty, I can't remember clearly but I'm sure I picked it up around January 2011.

Thanks for the thought, but it's on 1.11.

I'm starting to suspect it's mechanical, but that wouldn't explain the extreme slowdown in the menu system? Truly stumped....

Guys, my beloved K5 is having issues, and I wanted to run it by you guys to see if anyone can help or even point me in the right direction as to what exactly is going on with the camera.

Basically, the mirror looks like it's locked up (like when it's in sensor cleaning mode), and the shutter looks like it's stuck in place. It's like it's stuck in some sort of permanent live view mode, but there's no live view picture on the back screen. The camera can still turns on and off, however is otherwise not operational. I can see and change the camera settings when you press "menu", but I can't change the aperture/shutter speed, take a picture, or get live view to work. In fact, there's no shutter speed displayed at all on the back and top LCD screens, and there's a mismatch in the aperture display (top says f8.0, but the back screen says f1.4). The interface has slowed right down to a crawl, meaning I can navigate through the settings menus but it'll "lag" for a few seconds before the screen will respond to each key press.

I've tried everything to fix the problem, but to no avail. I've removed the battery, changed the lens, removed/changed SD cards, reset to factory settings, formatted the SD card, swapped the battery - nothing. Everything is still stuck, even without power!

Has anyone heard of this problem before? This problem could not have come at a worse time at just before Christmas - was hoping to get a few snaps of the family since we don't all get together often during the rest of the year. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!

Is this lens worth picking up if I have the Sigma 10-20? I'm gearing up for a trip to South East Asia soon, and am wondering if the DA15 would satisfy my wide angle needs while keeping the bulk down to a minimum.

Which Limited Lens?

Guys, hoping that you can weigh in with a little problem I've been pondering over lately... LBA has kicked in recently and I'm stuck with the difficult choice between the DA15 or the DA35?

I'm best described as a casual photographer with no specific focus. Photography is my weekend hobby and I'll shoot everything and anything, although going forward my friends and I are hoping to break into wedding and glamour photography.

In terms of the limited series, I currently have the DA21, DA40 and DA70. As the only Pentaxian among my circle, I love my pancake primes and it always amuses me to see my friends green with envy when I bust these babies out. Other lenses in my collection include the FA50, the Tamron 17-50, and the Tamron 70-200. My absolute favorite lens among all this is the DA40, which just oozes with character and personality.

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted the DA35 but I've always managed to find an excuse put it off. Time after time I see an amazing image posted here by a talented forum member, which just increases my lust for this beautiful lens.

I almost pulled the trigger tonight on the DA35 but then the doubts started creeping back again - in terms of focal length it's too close to the DA40, and I've already got the range covered by my Tamron. The DA15 would be the more logical option, being a focal length I don't currently have. But then I worry about it being too slow, and... argggg!! It does my head in!!!

Guys, I need your help! Which way do you think I should go??!

How much and from where did you get it? After browsing a few threads here I'm even more confused than ever! The sample pics from the Tamron look excellent, but the Sigma has that HSM factor . . . However I'm a little concerned about the reliability of the HSM motor . . . sounds like I'm going backwards and forwards here!

Primarily when I'm shooting at the longer end of my lens it's for close up portrature at various events & festivals. I've never felt as if 250mm was too short for my needs, but then again I've never actually tried anything longer than 250mm. Very rarely do I find myself in places where I can't just move closer to the subject so I don't think that it will be too much of an issue. If worse comes to worse a teleconvertor will temporarily solve my problems, won't they?

Telephoto Lens recommendations!

It's tax return time here downunder which means I get some moolah to fund my LBA! My telephoto needs are currently satisfied by my trusty DA18-250mm... however I've decided that it's time for an upgrade so what do you guys think I should replace it with? At the moment I've only really got 3 lens on my radar, being the Sigma 70-200 2.8, Tamron 70-200 2.8, or the Pentax DA* 200mm.

I was originally set on the Sigma but I've had a quick look through my photos and I've realised that the times when I do shoot telephoto, 90% of the time I'm shooting at 250mm. Given this, the Pentax prime came into the equation, and now I'm stuck with a difficult choice!

Any of you guys have a similar situation to me, and what choice did you end up making? I'm still leaning towards the Sigma just for the safety of the zoom and the option of a teleconverter, but I don't know... what do you guys think?

Those who use 18-200 or 18-250

When I was first starting out, the 18-250 lived on my camera... it was just so convenient, and with stunning results in broad daylight to boot. I've since bought the Tamron 17-50, and it's now replaced the 18-250 in terms of my primary lens. I thought the 18-250 was sharp... the 17-50 is on another level, and it works pretty well in darker environments too!

Which Benro tripod do you use? I'm thinking about buying a tripod and these seem terrific value.

Thanks everyone! What a relief to know that it's down to my bad technique rather than a defect lens!

Thanks guys. I'm a lot more at ease now. My initial thoughts were that the cause of the flare was the large floodlights as per your explaination Dave. But then later on in the night that weird ghosting / flare thing happened again during the second shot which got me worried - that scene was pretty far away, surely the fires couldn't be causing any lens flare!!? That's when I started examining the glass for scratches, damage etc. I'm still really worried, but more testing is in order I guess!

Another shot with the problem:

And there's definately no filters attached to the lens!! It is a mystery!!

Guys, HELP! I've just come back from testing my new Tamron 17-55 2.8 lens with my beloved K200d, and half of my photos have come back with some sort of lens flare issue! It seems to be a lot more pronounced in overexposed & long exposure shots. Is this a fault with the lens, or just down to bad technique? I was shooting with the bundled lens hood but it didn't seem to help at all. I've checked the front and back elements of the lens and it doesn't look like there's any scratches or dust at all?

I really want to love this lens but it just won't work out if all my images are going to end up like this!!

edit: no UV filters used.

edit 2: is this better placed in the lens forum? sorry, I'm a complete newb!
