Wow, I just experienced this for the first time this past weekend. I completely chalked it up to a random occurence since it hasn't happened to me before or since. Showed up in two of my photos, but I haven't been able to reproduce it.
Definitely most pronounced in this photo:
Photos shot 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after don't show any banding, though I did find another one with a small amount of the same taken relatively close to the problem photo. I took them from the same location on a public street so I figure it's entirely possible I was standing over a transformer or under some power lines or something.

For now, yes, I gave up on my Canon. The viewfinder can't hold a candle to the K10d's :)

These are both done using the CPC Phase2 70-200 f/4 at f/4.5@200mm. Definitely some different bokeh, coming from my Canon kit lens and EF-50mm 1.8

Wanted to play around with the camera today but I didn't have too much time. Fired off these two in our backyard though. Raw out of camera looked very low contrast and almost hazy, but the lens seems fine (no fungus, etc). Will try to +EV next time to see if maybe I can recover some detail. Will also stop down to 5.6 next time to see if the lens gets any sharper.

Thanks guys. While a little frustrating it was definitely fun. I imagine it'll be twice as good once I get the controls and quirks under control!

Literally the first day of serious shooting with my new (to me) K10d, my first ever Pentax. It's definitely a change from my Canon XT, but other than some real metering headaches that I've still got to overcome I'm REALLY happy with the camera.
There was an Indian heritage festival of some kind going on downtown so we figured this would be the perfect place to test everything out.
70-200 f/4 @ 200 (really unhappy at how I cut him off at the waist)
70-200 f/4 @ 200
And elsewhere on the waterfront:
70-200 f/4 @ unknown
70-200 f/4 @ unknown
The 70-200 is a little soft wide open but I think for a first day out trying to keep everything straight between a brand new lens and a brand new camera I did about as well as I could have hoped for :)
(post processing is my standard slight desat and curve bump to make contrast more stark)

Not checking +/- EV. Shooting half a day at -2EV on my Canon despite the camera clearly displaying the EV bar in the viewfinder :(
Boy was I kicking myself for that one. Messed up all the good shots in ideal lighting conditions, had to go back and redo them in much harsher light.

Dang, I still don't feel I need video but I'm definitely jealous of the ability :)
Haven't even received my first Pentax in the mail and already I'm lusting after the K7 :(

Economical package with a large bright viewfinder and image stabilization which make it ideal for an inexpensive manual-focus lens platform.

Just bought a K10d so this gives me plenty of reading material to go through before it ships. Thanks everyone!

Thanks guys. I'm feeling better and better about the K10d every day. I'm browsing the site and saw a few threads about metering issues with MF lenses so I'm going to do my research and see exactly what I need to pick up, but I think I'm going to scour craigslist for a good deal and pick one up one of these days!

Hi all,
Manual focusing on Canon XT is becoming impossible thanks to the tiny pentamirror viewfinder, so I'm looking to upgrade. Dollar for dollar, a used K10d seems to be a better value than a used Canon 30D/40D, so I'm considering picking up a K10D just to use with MF M42 lenses (and leaving my XT for use with EOS lenses, etc).
My biggest requirement is a (larger) brighter viewfinder. I found this comparison chart somewhere which (if accurate) pretty much shows the K20d having a larger VF than the Canon xxD series. My question then is how the K10d viewfinder stacks up to the K20d in terms of size and brightness? I found some anecdotal evidence suggesting it's the same in both cameras, but I can't find any hard evidence to back that up.
I played with the K20d at Henry's yesterday and aside from
1) Absolutely needing a grip to support my lower hand
2) Adjusting to Pentax's control layout
.. I absolutely loved it. I can't find any good reason to drop the extra money on the K20d over the K10d at the moment, but I'm pretty excited to get into the Pentax side of things!
Thanks!
